Mission Stéphane Bern is a foundation that deals with the preservation of French heritage buildings. It might be a good resource for you, you do have to apply, showing pictures of what needs to be fixed, and why the building is a heritage building. They’ve chosen the buildings for 2022 but I believe they are still taking applications for 2023. Good luck, you are doing a great thing in both your work and in your efforts to care for the chateau!

Many châteaux have years, if not decades, of deferred maintenance. You're proposing redoing a roof that likely lasts 100 yrs. It is probably the most expensive maintenance cost associated with châteaux. I applaud your willingness to undertake this much needed repair. I follow several château vlogs, but yours is so spectacular inside and out. Good luck with this project. You'll be in my prayers.

In England you can invite a local university to bring their students along in whatever building work needs doing with their tutor and they do work under their supervision. There are lot of areas this could apply too...even just fixing old books to fixing the roof. Check out if France does something like this.

Start a buy me a coffee account and call it Buy the Chateau a Roof Tile perhaps that goes to wherever you need it to? That way folks can donate along....so glad to see you ask for some help. It takes a village to conserve history! And maybe the board could help you include in the lease certain maintenance things are non-profit's responsibility and thus make room to charge just a bit more for the experience?

It fills me with hope now that I know you are putting yourself and the Chateau into a position where there is a good chance of success and the beautiful concept of helping young people my be successful. Long term planning is the key to all this and that includes long term financial planning. I am sure there are many people that will want to help you and the youth you hope to help. You might contact them, and see what the process is to apply! They also have a large intricate roof, and from the looks of the scope of the work being done, we’re awarded a large amount! They award several millions of dollars per year! It is well worth checking out, for sure! So why not check it out, if there is a way, there is a will!

This all sounds very informative. I'm impressed with your emphasis on what sounds like your one and only, sole purpose of "trying to help kids." which is very honorable. You have made provisions for should your project fail in some way. If that should happen, would consider being part of the support system for programs such as IVHQ, Americorps, Canadian Youth for Christ, or Peace Corps in impoverished areas of the world? Christian leadership shaped after such works by St. Francis of Assisi and St. Basil of Caesarea and oriented to youth leadership. I'm sure you had considered those kinds of ideas before settling on the chateau in France concept and wonder how it became your choice. Great to see the chateau being saved and restored for its national historic value. Keep up the good works.

When I bought and restored my 1903 Victorian commercial building, I saved the roof for last, which, in hind sight was good cash flow wise, but a challenge keeping it sealed as it need a full replacement (but I managed). I leased the building space on 1st and basement floors to my restaurant company for free and worked hard just to get my restaurant up and going and making money (cash flow). I would have loved donations! (obviously I couldn't since I had a for profit business - that at times was non-profit, lol) but I saved and saved money for a full replacement, which was awesome when it was completed. If I would have put all my money in the roof at first, I would have never been able (money wise) to get the business up and running - so it is a balancing act and in my opinion, you are doing things in the right order - I did the same thing and it all worked out in the long run. I am an accountant and controller, so I had a background in cash management and with that and project management - this is how you work to achieve your long term goal. I will enjoy watching the videos of your roof replacement. I support your mission !

I recently noticed another chateau owning couple recently renamed their channel to something that in the title spoke to what they are doing, as opposed to the family name. Their subscriptions and views appear to be escalating. Might this be an option for you? There are so many chateau channels. Cheers from Vancouver, BC

Also, will measures be taken to ensure that the slate used in each section of the roof is the same color and thickness? Will each section involve the restoration of the wood frame and surrounding masonry, in addition to installing the new slate? Will an architect and a project manager be retained to ensure historical authenticity, quality of workmanship, and coordination of work between each craft?

You keep mentioning the IRS, but your castle is in France. I’m by no means an expert but are you getting guidance from a tax attorney with knowledge in both tax laws? I’d be more worried about setting things right in regards to French taxes. There is a tax treaty between France and the US, but the impôts might pop in to question revenue coming from the US, non-profit or not. Given the major undertaking, I’d take the Monument Historique route. And there quite a few ways to receive grants in France (see Purnon for instance). Good luck for the reno, your castle is absolutely stunning and could generate a lot of revenue. Investing in a new roof would repay itself.

I love your château but like I said with all my respected I heard one video then another like in this one the letter have dated 03/03/2021 is not like you said recently in 2 months 2023 Well I understand also another things refer how to buy a château in France if you don’t have money but you will have all those students giving them everyday 3 meals? and for long period time. Yes.... perhaps I can clarify. Season 1 Episode 4 explains the finances pretty well I think. We sold, or mortgaged everything, so sold our main house, sold property in Canada, mortgaged the Beach house, which we do rent. Sadly we did not win million it was the cumulative sale and mortgage of our properties. With the 2021 letter, I just had the first approval on my laptop, and didn't want to go find the new one to put it up. We were "reinstated" very recently. (I won't bore you but it related to a retroactive reporting issue)... Got to run, but I'll clarify the student situation next. Sorry for miscommunication. I'll try to be more precise. Usually I over-explain.

So... with the study abroad.... the students do pay fees, and that money goes towards their expenses, so food, van rentals, hotels, and other costs (in a variety of countries incidentally). Your non profit business model won't maintain the chateau. You need to have an engineering depreciation report of the chateau that lays out a plan for repair. any money raised goes towards the repair projects identified in the report. you could make a million dollars per year and so long as the money is budgeted for the chateau, that meets the non profit status. if you have a board, you have expenses that exceed non profit status because they need money for luxuries. More important than the roof is the entrance way structural issues. that is first priority, not the roof.

As I tell every chateau owner, after getting the diagnostics before you buy the property, you should’ve known what needed repair. I don’t understand why do people buy these places without the funds to fix them. Sorry, I don’t get it.

Definitely open a "buy me a coffee" account. It makes it easier for individuals to donate $5, $10 etc at a time. It may not seem impactful, but even at $5.00, if 100 people donate then that's $500.00. Make sure to include the link on every video and you will be amazed at how fast the money is raised. If also seen where people start a "go fund me" account. With the target amount set. And that too is successful. However, the buy me a coffee seems to make people more comfortable. As each time, they can purchase multiple "cups" and funds do generate quickly. As well as you have timely access to the donations.

I agree with setting up alternate donation platform. I'll donate now thru PayPal, but with the recent revelation about them, I plan to get off that platform. Using GiveSendGo, people can see and get excited about the progress towards the goal. Don't feel sheepish about letting people know they can help--we WANT to feel a part of your project!

@Max It sounds like this is the first time you have seen this vlog. This couple don’t live at the chateau full time. They run a non-profit ministry at the chateau for college students for a number of weeks. I think they do 1 or 2 of these sessions then go back to the USA. He’s a professor at a college and his wife is an interior designer. They are “talking” in this video because they are in the USA. If you watched when they were at the chateau getting ready for students, you would have seen the projects that they do. The last time they renovated a bathroom and it was gorgeous. This couple realized that when they bought the chateau it will cost money doing the repairs and renovations. They did a number of rooms, bathrooms, areas on the first floor, as well as the kitchen downstairs. This chateau is not meant to be a “business” to make money like other chateaus that offer their place for events, like weddings or parties; a bed and breakfast, or a hotel. They are doing this as a ministry therefore getting the funds to do all the work needed can be challenging. They do a lot of the work themselves and get professionals as needed. I just hope you understand that they don’t just talk about doing the work…when they are in France…they do the projects they can with the money they have.

Perhaps at some future time you will be qualified to do classes on how to legally finance and support a non-profit in France along with all that entails. Bring in certified experts to assist in teaching. Could be beneficial to lots of ministries as God's Kingdom expands. 🤷‍♀️

The people who commented on your video were right. First job in restoration is making it watertight. If it was not in your budget to fix or replace the roof, and the complexity of the roof, perhaps you shouldn’t have bought this place. I’m not trying to be mean, just honest. Every restoration video or tv show I have ever watched, the roof, windows and all outside things were done first.

Wow, pretty sure they knew going in the roof would be an issue at some point. One just never quite knows when. How does your comment do any kind of good? It is free to just leave your two cents out and to be a decent human. If you can't say something nice and all......

First of all, constructive criticism is beneficial if it is accompanied by well-thought out solutions. But solutions can only be arrived at if the problems have been properly identified. Secondly, the problem is not "a shortage of capital"; there will be more surprises down the pike requiring bailouts if the Hildebrands don't get better organized. As I understand it, this property is following a "pay as you go" renovation, relying on revenues from visiting students to fund repairs. But the property is not ready to become a going concern. It requires initial investment for major repairs before scheduling groups for stays at the chateau. Someone else in the comments here mentioned the need for "diagnostics" prior to acquiring a property like this. I would heartily agree, and would add that it's never too late to get a professional assessment of the property's condition, along with high-level estimates of capital investments for renovation, and an expense forecast for maintenance and operations. The next step is to group the capital investments into discrete projects, and build an investment forecast based on available funding and project dependencies. At some point in the timeline, revenues will start to be generated, growing over time before reaching a plateau. You now have the information and tools to schedule your work and forecast your cash flows. Does your spreadsheet show negative cash flows at any point in the timeline? How are you going to handle that? Can any projects be re-sequenced to get more revenue earlier, without causing other problems? Are some projects really necessary, or can they be deferred? These are the kinds of things a business-minded construction project manager would handle. It's how you get organized. Now if the Hildebrands do get organized and have a roadmap in hand, they may find that the condition of the chateau makes it too costly to proceed; the cash flows will be too much in the red instead of in the black. That is the worst case. But it would be better to find that out before the next surprise hits them in the face. Who knows what other hidden problems may exist without that professional, diagnostic report? But if the cash flow forecast isn't too bad, and the diagnostic report says the roof is the only project that cannot be funded by operations, then yes, your request for donations may be achievable. The estimated cost to repair the roof is 250,000. Does that include carpentry and masonry work, in addition to replacing the slates? Does it include fees for an architect and project manager? Two donors have already offered 100,000, if I heard that correctly. So you need 150,000 more? How solid is that 250,000 estimate? Have you assessed your ability to raise funds from the public? Can you raise 150,000+ from people? Let's say you have 20,000 subscribers and friends, and assume 25% of them can make a donation. (People are struggling to survive with hyperinflation, and 25% may be too high a figure because of that.) Anyway, we have an estimate of 5,000 who can make a donation. That works out to 30 bucks per person. 5,000 people donating 30 bucks apiece. Is that doable in your mind? That figure will need to go up if there are any cost overruns on the roof, or if a proper diagnostic reveals further surprises of a critical nature. Sure, there are plenty of people who aren't business-minded who don't need a lot of data before deciding to pitch in. But can you find 5,000 people @ 30 bucks like that? If you get organized with a roadmap, you may be able to find a couple more serious investor/donors who will cough up that extra 150,000+. I used to teach the business case development course for Capgemini at the Château de Béhoust in Île-de-France, and Capgemini charged Fortune 500 clients up to $500 per hour for my advice. Consider this advice to be my donation to your cause. :)
