CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT ON TOYOTA PRIUS 04-09 - HOW TO FIX IT YOURSELF FOR UNDER $200 AUTOSAVER88

Well it was bound to happen eventually given I live in the most dangerous City in Maryland (surprise its not Baltimore). A friend that I have done car work for over the past few years reached out about his 2008 Prius exhaust being really loud. After he looked into it he found wires hanging down and ofcourse that led to find that his catalytic converter was stolen!
It seems the Toyota Prius is the most frequently stolen Catalytic Converter because they have the most scrap value of around $1000. Thiefs got it right out from under the car with likely a pipe cutter and a ratchet.
Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you look at it) this is common enough that a manufacturer has a direct fit in Catalytic Converter that can bolt right in against the cut off exhaust. This is a cheap (at the time under $150.00) kit online provided by Autosaver88 that includes a new Cat, Donut Gasket, clamp, and the bolts needed to reinstall the pipe. Now that ofcourse isn't the only part you will need as often the thieves take the 02 sensor as well because why waste time removing it they just cut the wires. All parts needed are listed below. Total cost was around $175.00.
Parts :
Catalytic converter : www.amazon.com...
02 sensor : www.amazon.com...
The job is simple enough and is easier on a lift. otherwise get the car up on ramps. You can slide the new pipe in and bolt it up. You will also need to install a new 02 sensor. The video hopefully will walk you through enough to do this yourself and save some money. I know my customer is a happy one and we were able to turn this terrible situation into a positive outcome.
NOTE : Since this is a clamp on you may see leaks over time and it will need welded at the end of Pipe. Ours had no leak and I dont believe we will have issues for a while. Also this kit I used is not for sale in California or Colorado. Please be aware of the requirements for your state.

All nice and easy but I live in California and they don’t sell it to you that easy-but let me know where can I get one for my 2010 Prius. Thanks

California is strict . I doubt you’ll find one on Amazon like this one . You may be better off seeing if AutoZone or advance sell a California approved catalytic converter. I checked on my commercial account and even the 900 dollar cats at AutoZone that are direct fit are not for sale on California . Might only be able to get one through the dealer :/

Yeah so far no problems with it . It’s a good aftermarket solution especially if your fixing it yourself . Just be sure there’s a little pipe left to slide it over . Sorry to hear about the theft .

Mine was just stolen from a parking lot in broad daylight. Can I drive it to the shop, maybe 8 miles? I know it will be loud, just don't want further issues.

Yeah you can drive it . It’s going to be loud and obnoxious. The owner of this one drove it a good 15-20 miles to my place

My 2007 Prius did not want to go. The mechanic was 4 miles away. I had to call tow truck for it.

@@Xcross40 didn’t have problems with this one . The rear 02 sensor doesn’t control fuel levels and the cat is for emissions only not a performance requirement . Perhaps on the theft they damage the upstream (front) 02 sensor . If that’s damaged or cut the car will be unable to monitor the air fuel ration and adjust the fuel trims. Sorry to hear about the theft.

@@JustFixinGarage Just a follow up. New non OEM cat cost me $1600 at a muffler shop and I had a shield installed for another $225. Western WA state. Muffler shop said they do 4-6 stolen cats every day. It's bad out there. Thanks for the advice - decided to have it towed anyway.
