2012 Chevy Sonic P0300 Random Misfire - Ignition Coil and Spark Plug Replacement - EASY DIY 30 MIN!

Customer brought in a 2012 Sonic with the 1.8 liter motor. The car was shaking and not running well. The check engine light was on and blinking. Upon checking the code we found a p0300 for Random Misfire. We did a visual inspection by removing the coil and found the stem/tip of the coil was broken off as well as it was base of the coil was broken. We believe this was causing the coil to arc to ground/motor block causing this excessive misfire.
Today we end up replacing the coil and plugs with OEM parts listed below. We probably only needed to do the coil but better to do a full tune up.
PARTS :
Coil : ACDelco GM Original Equipment 25186687 Ignition Coil
Plugs : ACDelco 41-122 spark plug (x4)
We also only need a few simple tools to do this.
Plugs
t-40 Torx
5/8 Spark plug socket
6 inch extension of various extensions to reach socket
Ratchet (torque wrench suggested for 18 ft lbs)
If you have any question slet me know. After this tune up and letting it burn off that excess fuel this thing is running great!

    The tools you will really need is the torx bit , spark plug socket , and an extension. That’s if you want to do all the plugs and wires . For sure this is a 2 out of 5 stars for difficulty and as long as you don’t over tighten the spark plugs you will be fine .

Got a refund and bought a Duralast that’s lifetime warranty so if it goes again I’ll just swap it for free and get part same day. I think part quality is a major problem since covid even oem is spotty

    @@bigpoppapump4060 Reading back over your list of parts replaced was the throttle body replaced already? They can cause alot of issues. If cylinder 3 continues to be an issue it might be worth checking all wiring to it and maybe even doing a compression check if not already just to rule out a mechanical failure. Next would be to try swapping injectors to see if thats an issue with Fuel. Do let me know about the throttle body. If those go usually car goes in limp mode.

    Is there a design problem that the spark plug on the oil fill end gets hotter than the others? When I changed my plugs, that first one was hotter than the others. Could that same issue cause the deterioration and cracking you show on the coil on that end?

  • @JustFixinGarage

    @JustFixinGarage

    10 ай бұрын

    I would lnt be surprised if thats the root cause. I feel like most design issues at this point in manufacturing are intentional to keep things from lasting. I have done a few of these Chevy motors and all have similar issues with that one piece coil pack. The heat and cracking may be a side effect of a bad connection/spark as that would generate more heat as well. Or it could be that is just a hotter side of the motor depending on where the water jackets are.

    Hey how many have come in since video? Just purchased one couple weeks ago and have had it in the shop twice . First time the said engine blow by was happening and second time they got the same diagnostic Code you did . “They saw cracks on 2 coil towers , also checked pcv system and noted crankcase vac above spec of 1hg at aprox 3-5hg , they recommend replacing camshaft cover and Ignition coil” and then they ended up installing a new valve cover and ignition coil . Do you think they did the right things and I should be set to go? or am in for a bunch of fixes on this car . I got $$ for the advice as well since it’s valuable I know . Thanks in advance

  • @JustFixinGarage

    @JustFixinGarage

    I’ve had 3 of these come in for this issue . Keep in mind I do IT for a living this is just side work for friends and family and some extended friends so I don’t work out there more than maybe 1-2 times a week . One of them I saw twice where the coil failed in a year . Luckily it’s a 2 year dealer warranty on the part so easy swap . The valve covers that have built in pcv valves are known to be problems on this so it probably didn’t hurt . But usually bad pcv throws a different code .

  • @JustFixinGarage

    @JustFixinGarage

    7 ай бұрын

    Oh and new plugs at the same time doesn’t hurt , bad plugs can cause the coil to fail prematurely too as it works harder to generate spark .

  • @bethjohnson3376

    Will this also cause a gas smell when pressing the gas? I have the same year about 86700 miles on it and it just happened all of a sudden. But when trying to press the gas is hesitates and smells like gas.

  • @JustFixinGarage

    @JustFixinGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    Due to misfires there would be an excess of unburned fuel . So the smell would be excessive and I would expect the car to bog out and hesitate when trying to give it more throttle. I suggest if your engine light is blinking you stop driving . As the excess fuel not burning can damage your catalytic converter and require it be replaced.

  • @JustFixinGarage

    For this car I’d say air filter , cabin air filter , The plugs and if needed the coil . It won’t have thinks like wires , cap , or button to do . These do have known failures in the pcv valve which if I remember correctly is built into the valve cover itself.

    I’ve become a person to use it a lot . However it’s not required and the factory doesn’t do it . There are also some plugs that even say not to do it. I have just had side plugs be stuck in the head due to rust and over torquing so I try to do this hoping the next person down the line doesn’t have issues . But 100% if you don’t want to use it you don’t . Just don’t over torque them.
