Step 1 : Remove the Negative connection on the car battery, from the factory this should be a 10 MM Nut. Loosen it and wiggle the terminal off. I suggest putting a Rag or some other non metallically item between the connection and battery to ensure it doesn't accidently touch.
Step 2 : In whatever form needed get the car in the air safely that will allow you to work under it, Car ramps or Jack with Jack stands and be sure to chock the wheels and put the parking brake on. I as seen in the video have a car lift so that is the lifting method I used.
Step 3 : With the use of a 10MM Socket and a ratchet or impact remove all of the 10 MM bolts holding the Belly Pan onto the vehicle. You will also need to remove the two plastic push pins on each side of the belly pan to remove it
Step 4 : With the Starter visible Use long Needle Nose pliers to remove the signal wire (should be Yellow) from the starter and tuck it out of the Way.
Step 5 : Using a 13 MM Socket on a Ratchet remove the TOP Nut off the starter that is holding down the Wire Terminal connection onto the starter. Once the nut is removed use the needle lose pliers to pull the Terminal off of the Starter.
Step 6: Using a 15 MM Ratchet and Socket reach behind the starter (its difficult I know) and align the socket and ratchet onto the back bolt. Loosen and remove the bolt. This took me 8 solid minutes to just get this bolt off. Do note you want to get this bolt off first otherwise if you remove the 14 MM visible bolt itll make the 15MM harder to remove due to the tension of the weight of the starter.
Step 7 : Remove the 14 MM visible bolt that holds the starter to the vehicle. I used a swivel and an extension so I could get more turns on the bolt to work it off.
Step 8 : With all of the Bolts removed and wiring off the Starter you can drop the Starter off the car. First pull it off of the Transmission housing and then the starter can be removed through the back part of the Axle Tube as seen in the video.
Step 9 : Compare the New and Old Starter to ensure it matches. Remove the Nut on the Terminal on the new starter where the Wire terminal will connect. Otherwise you will have to remove it after its on the car and thats more work !
Step 10 : With the confirmation the new starter matches the old and the Nut is removed on the stud slide the new starter onto the vehicle the same way the old one came out
Step 11 : I found it best to put the Wire Terminal on the stud before installing the bolts because the wiring was so tight. I used the long Needle Nose Pliers for this and once the wire was on it actually helped align the starter.
Step 12 : Install the 15 MM bolt on the back of the starter (has to be done with feel). Once that bolt is starter install the 14 MM bolt that is visible. Do not tighten any of the bolts until both are started and the starter is flush with the motor (lined up).
Step 13 : Personally I started to tighten the 14 MM bolt up with very little left and then by hand finger tightened the 15 MM back bolt until it was tight then used the ratchet to finish it off. As always that bolt took the longest. Once the Back 15 MM was tight I then finished tightening the 14 MM Bolt
Step 14 : Ensure the Terminal is fully seated on the Starter Stud. Install the Washer and Nut over the Stud using the new 13 MM Nut. Tighten until snug. Do not overtighten or you could break the stud.
Step 15 : Install the Signal wire (Yellow wire) over the Metal connection . If on hand I put some dielectric grease onto the connection to ensure it connects properly.
Step 16 : At this point the Starter should be fully installed, Both Starter Bolts Tightened and Electrical connections are connected
Step 17 : If you prefer before installing belly pan you can test the starter by attaching the Battery connection otherwise continue to step 18
Step 18 : Install the Belly pan with the removed 10 MM Bolts and 2 Plastic Push Pins
Step 19 : Lower the car off the ground and connect the negative Ground cable back to the battery and tighten the 10 MM Nut
Step 20 : Test the new starter , Do note since the battery was removed its possible the car will take a moment to read the KEY and allow the car to start.
Tools Used :
3/8 Ratchet
3/8 swivel
Extension
10 MM Socket
13 MM Socket
14 MM Socket
15MM Socket
Compound/Long Need nose pliers
Trim Removal tool
Part : DL5108S
Time to complete job : Just under 2 hours, Your time may differ due to me having a lift and an impact. (started at 8:30 AM and finished at 10:15 AM includes recording)

Bro thank you, my wifes dodge dart had a click no crank, because of your ground video and this one, it helped my to determine the starter was bad and with your guidance, it was simple as heck. The only thing that I did to make it a little easier was, I used a long trim removal tool and popped the wire harness off the intake manifold to get some slack for the wire that connects to the starter. Making it easier to connect. I did leave the harness unsecured in that one specific location to make replacement a easy if necessary in the future. Thank you again, for everything that you do and all of the help that you offer to the world.

Excellent video. Everything else I had watched said you had to go in from the top. I watched this just in time to save myself a lot of work. Just pulled the starter from my daughters 2014 dart 2.4 without issue and I was able to do it without a lift. Thanks

That hidden bolt is a bit of a challenge but fully doable ! No need to do it from the top :) besides taking the connection off the battery nothing will be from the top.

I went back and forth on the video a couple times, but wimped out. I needed at least some jack stands and was nervous to hang under the car that long as a rookie. I took it to the dealership. Cost me $650… Woof. Wanted to say the video was great and I subscribed. Thanks for getting dirty and teaching the rest of us. Keep grinding!!

Also I thought it was interesting the dealership starter was over $300 (hosed me) plus the book said 2.1 hours of labor. I do think they went underneath using your same approach. Another takeaway is the car starts very aggressively now, almost like a machine gun compared to the original starter. Good tip on finding out if I got my core charge back.

@@sirandrewwilliams240 thanks for the comment . Glad the video gave you some insight even if the dealer did it . I am sure the dealer marks up what they can and 650 is about average I have seen higher estimates. When I did this recently the starter was brand new not reman under 200 with a lifetime warranty . It surely can be done in under two hours even without a lift . All that matters is that your car is starting well and you aren’t stranded :) thanks again for the comment .

I changed the starter on our 2015 Dodge Dart SXT just like you did in this video. Was able to get that back bolt with a little patience and work. Took about 10 minutes. I wish I had the lift as I had it up on jack stands and I'm sure that made it a little harder , but it still can be done. Thank you very much for the video. I seen others that say you have to take everything out from the top , but you really don't. Defiantly get a swivel with extensions to make it easier.

Thank you for this video, it is definitely the most in depth and informative one. It took me multiple tools and all day yesterday trying to get that back bolt off but it was so hard to do because it was swapped with the one on the bottom so the bolts were swapped from when a new engine was previously put it. But after I got that bolt out it was easy breezy.

There are a few reasons for it but I have had a friend with a dart where he didn’t have one put back on . As you mentioned water can get up and hit things like belts and such . There is a reason for aerodynamics for air to glide by also for what goes through the grill to help keep everything cooler . My friend who didn’t have it didn’t notice any mpg issues or heat issues. So bottom line , I think you can run fine without it .

I didn't have this issue and this doesn't have any shims for use. Im suspecting maybe a few people have gotten bad starters. Or if when it was being bolted in it didn't bolt flush to the engine/transmission . I always make sure it flush but if it got pivoted sideways that could cause noise as well.

  • @JustFixinGarage

    @JustFixinGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

I’m sure there are countless things that could cause it . I have only ran into this in a vw and it was the door latch sensor . Some door latches electronically send a signal of the door is open or closed . If it’s going bad it could be tricking the car into thinking a locked door is opening . The fix for this was to replace the latch assembly .
