Cast in place faceted stone - sand casting - tutorial
I have done a video on faceted stones in the past, but that was before my fancy new phone with super zoom camera!
Please enjoy the close up detail of how I cast in place faceted stones in sand casting.
Please like and subscribe to my channel, the more followers the closer I get to being paid for my content. That way I can keep making tutorials and uploading them for everyone to see :)

Hi everyone im a sand caster. And i am so glad i watched this today because i was missing two important things in this video. 1. I wasnt packing the male side upside down. Doing this gets a cleaner surface. 2. I wasnt gently packing around the object with my fingers. Thank you for this video!!😊
For anyone wondering... your metal will expand. So even if its not perfectly set its still good. I didnt know this till a week ago.😊 This project gives me a chance to use my small CZs. Also re crisping wasnt in my process till i saw your videos. 👍
Another great video from you, Kirra-lea, thanks 😊👏 You are a great instructor and the camera angle and focus is perfect! 👏👍

Beautiful work! I have been casting sterling in delft clay for quite some time... but have yet to cast gems in place! I have some lovely stones that were mined local to me, I think your video has inspired me to take the leap and just do it. Really though, absolutely stunning work here!

Would love to have seen you using the graver to unearth the stones. I am really enjoying your videos, I am a self taught silversmith and sand casting is my new area of learning. Thank you

If you see this, what did you put on the stone to help keep it in place?
Your tutorials are fantastic and love your work. Would a propane sievert torch suffice for this application? Thanks so much :)
Awesome! I learned a lot watching this about 20 times 🤣 Just had my first successful one. A Ruby ring. Gotta work on placement though 😂 Thanks for the amazing reference video 😎🤘🏾🤘🏾 stay awesome

Thank you so so much for these fantastic videos Kirra-lea! I was hoping to attend one of your classes up north this year, but it wasn't meant to be. These really hit the spot until it's possible. Something I find challenging as a hobbyist (i.e. making it up as I go along) is finding suppliers of stones. The whole process is quite daunting (Where do I find them? How much should they cost? Are they good quality? Are they ethically sourced?? Is it ok to buy online or is brick and mortar shop better?). I for one would love a video with some tips, particularly from an Australian perspective :) Keep up the amazing work 🎉🎉

Hi Kirra-lea. will you be doing a spinner ring tutorial in the future please?
Hi Kirra-lea, thanks for all the casting experience. just want to know after casting, can we pickling the ring with gem stone in acid?

Sure can :)
Thanks, super helpful vids! Do you have to make sure to use un-heated stones? Or will heated stones cast no problem?
@sandcasting_with_kirralea

I havent really come across a problem, sometimes they change colour. But mostly the colour change is because the stone has metal behind it in full contact so its darker. Hope that helps :)
thank you very much for your video. What gems should I use for this job?
Unimaginable! You're casting the ring with the stones directly! Doesn't that damage the gemstones in any way? That's a completely new concept for me.

Hi! Thanks for an amazing tutorial… your torching process of melting the silver seemed to be extremely fast! Do you mind telling me what type of torch you used to get such quick results like that? Thanks!

Wait you are pouring molten silver on the Stones ? They dont break or get damaged?o:
hello. I am a person studying jewelry design in Korea. I have a question. Will the unprocessed ruby be damaged if heated silver comes in contact with it? Also, what is the clay used? I'm curious.

Rubies are usually fine but always cast-in-place with the knowledge that the stone might break.

Thanks for your videos! Really learning a lot as I am too sand casting.... but finding it hard to remove the stones from the silver cast lol... not sure what I’m doing wrong, but if you have any tips to remove my beautiful sapphires so I can reuse the silver. Thank you!! ☺️

I also have this problem. My two solutions are cutting up the casting and bending it until the stones pop out. But when that is not an option I will melt the silver down and fish the stones out of the liquid metal :)
Did you use silver for your ring?
@sandcasting_with_kirralea
2 жыл бұрын
Sure did, but its exactly the same process for any of the golds :)
Where can i find clay like that? My clay is very sticky
May I ask what’s in the red tube? And how do you know how much silver to melt😊

I'm a sand caster and I thought I'd answer your question. Math wise sterling silver has a gravity of 10.4 grams. So weigh your original ring and × 10.4. So if your original ring is 2 grams....10.4 × 2 = 20.8 g. You can always go over a bit. Extra weight actually helps. Eye ball it and get as much silver as your object plus big sprue hole
Would this also work with cuttle casting? xx

Anything 7.5 and harder on the hardness scale is a good guide. But really just experiment and see what works :)
I've watched a LOT of sand casting videos. Your videos and your skills are beyond compare! Thank you for the videos and I'll keep watching and learning.
