Resizing a ring in the clay - sand casting tutorial - Red Clay
In this video I am running through how to resize a ring smaller in the clay, its also doubling as how to thicken up the shank of a master in the clay.
At the end of the video is a montage on how I clean up the casting to a mirror polish and hammer set a round brilliant cut sapphire.
Hope the video is helpful. Please like and subscribe!

No wasted motion. You are incredibly proficient in pouring and teaching. To end up with such a fine ring, is amazing!
Oh! I searched the whole world to find you. Thank you for sharing so many great techniques, the video tutorial - Resizing a clay ring - sand casting tutorial has been great for me and the whole community. Thank you so much, love you so much. Wishing you good health and continued work growth.
Hands down the best sand caster! 🙌
Whaaa, you’re amazing at this!! So quick and confident and awesome outcome. Have had such a knowledgeable session watching this. Thanks. my kit just arrived today and I’ve been keen on trying for so long. I’m stubborn with my creativity so I was trying to do it alone working out what sands and moulds and melting points of metals. Just bought the kit that you are working with. (With delft clay) So so keen to try. Thanks for your tutorial, helping a lot!
Gah - i want this ring. And now I wanna make it. Dang, I really don’t need another hobby but that looked very cool.

Fabulous Kirra-lea. Thanks for this. I love your calm, clear demos. I’ll get some of those sizer rings. Don’t tell a soul that this beginner used cardboard and sellotape to cast a bigger ring. No one must know!

Hahaha whatever gets the job done! :)
Nicely done. Silver is probably the best metal to plate. Any diamond setter with a plating tank will take silver; it's a typical valuable metal and it doesn't cause any disturbance to the plating cycle.
Kira, great work, need to try to make one from silver or gold, just need to learn how to set a diamond.
Great detailed explanation of your process. I’ll have to try this. ✊🏻🖤
Awesome 👏
I so appreciate your Viddys ,, such a good follow up from your workshops 🔨 🔥
Beautiful job, really enjoyed your explanations.
Fantastic!!!
What a great job.
Awesome result and well explained! I am just getting into making my first ever jewellery, after two years of regular metal casting; so this is very helpful :)

❤ very very good 👍 ji
What gas do you melt using? LPG only or LPG mixed with O2 ? thank you
Hey Kirra! First off I think your videos are AWESOME! Secondly I'm just starting out and attempted my first cast yesterday (I knew it was going to be a fail half way into making the mold as there's a hole in the middle of the signet I was trying to cast but I'm a tryer 😂) when my mold was complete I realised the centre circle of the ring wasn't staying in place so I tried again with another ring (no hole) and the same thing happened? I'm not sure why as I'm chopping the clay up fine, packing it hard with a hammer and using talc 🤷♀️. Can you advise on what I'm doing wrong? ALSO is it possible to sand cast carvings with holes or do I have to drill in after? I feel like if anyone would have an optimistic answer it would be you! Thanks in advance! Nads x
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! It was very helpful. Would you mind sharing the tool you used for poking the air vents? Thanks in advance ;)
THANKS, FOR THIS DEMO! HOWEVER: IMHO: YOUR FEEDER SPRUES OUGHT TO BE DIRECTLY INTO THE LARGEST MASS SECTION OF THE PATTERN,... VET SPRUES COME OUT OF THE SMALLER SECTIONS...
Nice. Where can I get a torch system like yours?
Hi There. Very interested in the sand casting. I bought a heap of Lost wax casting equipment from a lady on Hindmarsh Island. Just need the vacuum pump. have all the other necessary gear but no Idea. Maybe the sand casting is a good place to start. Were would be the best place to get the flask and clay. AJS? Twin Plasa? I have quite a few small sapphires not suitable to cut but may be good for this style of casting. I will have a look see if I can make on of you courses at the jam factory.

Both Combined Jewellery Services and Australian Jewellery Suppliers are great places to buy clay and flasks from in Australia :)
Hi Kirra-lea, I'm just learning how to do this process at my work! Is it possible to use old scrap gold jewellery? I heard combining old jewellery might make the metal weaker? It's all 9carat but most likely mixed with different alloys.
What torch are you using?
What kind of heat system you’re using, thank you
I just came across your channel and very much appreciate the information. Thank you! Would it be possible to share where or brand of the loose ring sizers, I’m seem to only find the ones that come with the ring attached. Thanks for your work!

I bought my set from Australian Jewellery Suppliers :) But you can use the ones on the rings, just take them off the big ring :)
When making custom gold rings what stamp do you put in it

Is it possible to make a pronged ring (engagement ring) with sand casting?
Hi Doing it this way doesn’t this just make the ring thicker tho I’m guessing if you are trying to stick to a certain weight light a wedding band This way is no good But just thought on Couldn’t you use the ring sizes for making wedding bands

Can buy red clay sand casting with that round sandbox?
Thx for a helpful video! i'd like to ask some questions if you don't mind/ Yesterday i tried to melt 915 silver (it was an old spoon i don't need) in my crucible, and when silver starting to melt, the borax starting to melt too. and they kind of mixed with each other. do you know why that could happened? thx in advance.

What you have described sounds odd. But borax is meant to melt when it gets hot, it turns into a liquid. When it cools it turns into a solid like glass.

@@sandcasting_with_kirralea yes that was strange for me.i didn't expect that. May be too much borax was in this crucible...

How can I caste a hollow ring please?
