A review of a regular Casio DW-290 that has the appearance and water resistance of a G-Shock making it one of the toughest regular Casio watches out there and a cheaper alternative to G-Shocks.
It was made famous by being featured in the first Mission Impossible movie as it was worn by Ethan Hunt, the main character played by Tom Cruise and it has since gained a cult status among affordable watches.

I forgot it was worn in Mission Impossible. I like that the days of the week are seen. It's nice to be able to have a replaceable shell. Good lume, A lot for $30. 👍
I'd looked at these awhile back and kind of forgotten about them. Will definitely pick one up at some point. Nice vid!
telling you the truth I'm doing scuba diving today for starting 5 to 10meter depth with this watch omg no problem at all guys...I am not kidding dam.. cheap but veryy good watch
It is simple, elegant and beautiful.
i already discovered this watch about 1 year ago. purchased it and use it as my backup watch in my bag in case when it rains heavily and my wrist watch i happen to be wearing is a "dress watch water resistance watch around 50 m WR" only.

I think your being a tad over cautious with your WR rating any watch rated with a 50mtr WR is safe for a shower light swimming the pool espescially a Casio !!! --
I owned one of these nearly 20 years ago, I dropped it in the dead sea, it was only about 8 foot deep but you can't sink in the dead sea so I lost it, so I assume its covered in salt now. I had no idea they still made them, I loved that watch.

I've had this watch for a good few months now and I'm wearing it today. I've always been a Casio fan since I was a kid in the early 80's, just had to have this one in the collection too. Class watch and not very expensive at all, I got it for £40 on Amazon.

did the green/blue letter rub off? alot of reports say that the words got worn off.

Not yet, its perfectly fine. But I don't wear it everyday.
they should´ve put the light button below the case where it reads 200m, a big easy to press button, like in the dw 6600 and some other models, that would free the side button for something more useful
I bought this watch almost 2 years ago and because of my large collection I haven't worn it in a long time but thanks to your awesome reviews I'm going to put it on the wrist right after I'm done typing this comment 🤣..... Thanks again for your review's cheers 🍻
Actually, this has been in a nighties SciFi show. The show was Space Above and Beyond, episode Who Monitors The Birds, air date January 7, 1996. Cooper Hawkes is checking his watch at night, you can make out the screen, and the Illuminator logo.

@@WatchGeek me too, but the series ending sucked! I have the box set, so I have been watching some of the episodes. I was able to pause it on the screen, and get a good look. It was the shape that caught my eye. They did remove some of the Casio lettering, but there was no mistaking it was a DW290.
I have this same Mission Impossible I watch since 2001, only the strap is changed twice and the battery twice for 19 years of everyday wearing. It's tough as an army tank. Next year it turns 20 on my wrist, the only watch that I think to buy next is a G-Shock GW-M5610.

Do you still have the DW290? Did you end up buying the G-Shock 5610?

@@adsagp Not long after I posted the comment, my friend asked me if I would like a Casio watch as a present because I accepted the role to be his best man at his wedding. It was an offer I could not refuse :D Of course, I chose the G-Shock 5610. But I waited for a few months before I switched, just to make the 20th anniversary with my DW-290. Now I'm almost 3 years with the G-Shock 5610 and can't be happier, I don't want another watch. Maybe someday I will buy the GW-9400 because I think it's the overall best watch ever when we take all the parameters into consideration, but I will still wear the 5610 more. After I switched to the 5610 I gave the DW-290 to my father, so the legend continues :)

@@adsagp Oh believe me it will last for twice that long I'm sure
Nice. I actually wish G-Shocks had regular spring bar lugs like that as I find them to be a lot more comfortable and versatile. I'm not really sure why they do the weird proprietary lugs because they don't necessarily seem stronger. If they wanted to make the lugs stronger than regular spring bars, I'd prefer they do some kind of screw in pins or something that would still allow you to have more articulation and still potentially use aftermarket straps/bracelets.
@RockandrollNegro
8 ай бұрын
The proprietary G-Shock lugs aren't much stronger than conventional lugs, but the design of the strap integration itself overall makes the G-Shock as resistant as it is. Casio arrived at that design after a year of torture and drop tests, which is why it's not changed much at all in 40 years; they pretty much nailed it right out the gate. A square G-Shock loses about 30% of its impact resistance when fitted with a conventional strap, so those quirky lugs aren't just there for show.
Great video! This one is on my wish list :)
Cant wait for my new one arrive 😍
My first watch 20 years ago.... Still got it! Still works great! Still think its a cool watch😎

@@willywantoknow2563 some source says the battery only lasts for 2 years, so that really is my consideration between dw 290 and dw 291. Spec-wise theyre both pretty similar, but man im beginning to love the looks of this dw 290. And anyway, thanks for your answer!
I love the look!!! Unique design and so was to read.
Great job! I like this watch, think I'll pick it up.
I recently complete my mission (not impossible), I got one, is great!

@@WatchGeekjust got one yesterday and I am so in love with this DW 290 a.k.a "badak" or rhinoceros in Indonesian language. Maybe this watch is as strong as a 🦏😊
When i first choose this watch you may say i love it from the first sight. And it is charming
The price right now in 2021 around $45 almost same as g shock dw 5600, do you think its worth it?
Tough call. I like the way the 290 looks, but it's pretty close in price to the entry level g-shock (within $10-$12). If it were still $24, it would be a no brainer for a durable work watch. I don't have either yet.
.cool review.. thxs f sharing..
I like your reviews
Ok, so, hard question. If you had to choose between a standard 5600 G-Shock, and the DW-290, what would you do? I love, love, LOVE my GW-7900, but, because it needs to go sunbathing for a charge. This leaves me without a watch indoors, so I need a "beater," that I can wear while the 7900 is charging. There is an $8.00 USD difference between them.
@adsagp

I would get the DW290. What did you get? I use my G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-1 all the time now. The 7900 looks good too.
Ignore the haters, Casio and Tissot are all i wear. Casio and Gshock are unbeatable

I love mine. And that nice turquoise writing rubs off when you wear it like mine. I have yet to run into someone who wears the same piece so it’s a good unique buy and a good mission impossible story lol
On my way to buy this...cool watch
كيف احصل عليها ؟!
Hello, watchgeek l respect your reviews very much except for your review of the AW-590-1AER l think you were very harsh on that beatiful g shock you were way off with that boy but l love your simple and straight to the point with DW-290 people say the turquiose blue text comes of very easily well lve owned mine for about ywo years and he’s had a lot of wrist time and the text on mine is still intact so l don’t really know what’s going on there- maybe l got lucky with mine and lm glad about that because the blue text gives the watch a lot of charm !!
Do you have the watch the Tom cruise wore in mission impossible 2 ?

Yes, I have a GW6900 which is a Solar Atomic version of the DW6900 he wore in that movie. Here's my review of the whole 6900 line: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YpiKudigdbO0l5M.html
First big purchase... 20ish years ago? I forget... After a few watches, i still gravitate to it.
Why regular casios have more battery life than g shocks?
I have that one, very tought boy and very good looking. I have the w 740, you should make a review about it.

This is what I refer to as the Casio Klingon edition. In fact, if they replace the Arabic numerals with Klingon, Casio will have another hit on their hands.

Why do you think I don't like them? They are just hard to come by here in Croatia so I rarely get to handle one. I dislike their user interface as I am used to Casio but I LOVE their night mode where the backlight is turned on as long as you operate the buttons. That is just awesome and I wish Casio did that as well

in January 2020 there is a new release for this model Casio DW-291H-1AVEF , similar buttons 200 m WR & very attractive looking too :)
Does this watch have world time
Nup, don't like the shape or bulkiness of that at all. Tbh I much prefer the G-Shock that was used for comparison. Huge fan of Casio, especially the retro's, just not the oversize bulky wall-clocks..... after all I haven't got wrists like Arnie 😉

A CR2032 is too thick (3.2mm instead og 1.6mm). You could try a CR2020 or maybe a CR2025. I have ordered this watch myself. BTW. I think the biggest difference to a G-shock is that it has resin crystal, but it is recessed so not a huge problem. There are quite a few G-shocks that does not have replacable bezels I belive, like the G-2900 which is one of my favorites.
