I thought this was the ugliest thing ever until I got one: it's actually pretty cool in person -- all those wonky colours and shapes just work somehow! 👍

I can't believe ppl are still into this watch. I got mine in 1995 and it's been in my watch case since about 2000. I took it out a week ago and it is still working. I changed the battery back before I put it to rest. That's probably 22 yrs on the same battery. That has to be a record or something. But.........as soon as I hit the light button, the watch died. Anyways, I am wearing it today after a new battery and a band replacement. The band literally crumbled as soon as I put it on. If you ever watched the movie Goonies, this watch is the "Sloth" of watches. Ugly but if you can get past the looks, you'll grow to love it. Thanks for the review. Good to see ppl still love this thing.

Just ordered one and on the casio web site it states that the glass is "Mineral Glass" And am I alone in thinking that it is actually quite a good looking watch?

I admit ,when I first saw it I didn’t like it.But saw mi 1 and 2 tonight I had to buy it it., the movie gave it that cool factor!

I own this watch since a few months. To me it is much more better than the DW-5600. The buttons are much better to operate, standard straps are matching and it has all the basic functions of a G-Shock. This one will be always my first choice.

I agree with everything you just said. I just purchased the 5600. And I wanted it because it said G-Shock. When in reality this watch looked much better on my wrist and much cooler I thought. I'm going to bring back the 5600 and get this watch. I am very easy on my watches anyway so I don't need something that a truck could run over. LOL

I love the way that Casio watch looks. It's kind of a funky looking watch but that's part of it's charm it kinda reminds me of an 80's throwback style watch, i really like it.

In a recent video TVG showed that he purchased two replacement dw-290s so he'll "never be without one". He has it on good authority that the watch will soon be discontinued. I was lucky enough to have recently purchased one at a thrift store in near mint condition for only $6. I've always thought the watch ugly, but it'll probably get some wrist time regardless only because I'm a big fan of the M.I. movies.

Its extremely ugly. But it gets the job done.

My two favorite Casio watches are the DW-290 and the W-740.

I like the design,I have a few g-shocks but I'm gonna pic up one of these.

The only drawback when it comes to replacing the watch band is the small gap between the case and the spring bars. I had to force with all my might to get a fairly thin NATO strap between the bars. Just keep that in mind. Also, on an 18 mm NATO the watch looks too big for the width of the strap. I’ve been trying to find an 18 to 22mm adapter to fit a wider strap on it.

It was not necessary to force the lugs ... just put the adapters for the G Shock ... I did it

Definitely has a cult following. One of the few that hasn’t snared me with its charms , but that still leaves about 1 million Casios left in the sea!!

I think it looks kool. Im gonna order one

That light feature is actually really nice. G-shock should pick it up already

Pretty sure this has a mineral crystal. I bought mine in the late '90s and still have it. NOT A SCRATCH ON ITS face! So NOT easy to scratch. I believe that the earlier Casios did not cheap out as much on the crystals. That's probably a more 21st century cost cutting move. Let's be honest, BEAN COUNTERS and PROFIT are pretty much where we are at NOW! And that's not a good thing! But it's great for people's portfolios-so it's a kind of Capitalist jiu jistu-link your consumer to his/her retirement funds and force him/her to desire more and more obscene profit margins that have worse and worse effects on people, the environment and quality of life. Portfolio INCOME UP, everything else DOWN! But enough commentary! A very distinctive watch that I bought for the water resistance. The Aqua lettering does wear off but that's OK. It does look better that way. I only have a 7" wrist and this wears fine! You have a 7 1/2"? What are you? 6'3" or bigger, lol. I'm 6'1" medium frame, about 190+ lbs. Aesthetically? I really like this, it has a "different" vibe. Distinctive for sure. A love it or hate it. To me a lot of the rounded G Shocks are less aesthetically distinctive/pleasing. I prefer the 5600 series in many ways?

I'm just awaiting delivery of one! It's a good question. I've seen some people use alcohol or nail polish remover to get rid of the lettering but personally I like it. I think if you wear it as a beater it will wear off quite quickly, but if you wear it casually and be a little bit careful it will last for quite a few years but not forever. One thing, this watch through still for sale is not being manufactured anymore so if you get one and hold on to it and keep it in perfect condition it might become a collectors item and be worth more in around 5 years! By the way, the crystal isn't plastic or acrylic, it is actually mineral glass.

This share the same module with the W-740 and some weird G-Shocks of yesteryears I found on ebay.

These were much more attractive when they were $24 and a dw5600 was $40. The gap is much narrower now

Functionally this is actually better than the square. I like my digital to be solar however.

Just got the DW-290 recently. It boggles me how people were able to fit a NATO on this watch. There is hardly any space with the springbars being really close to the watch.

Why no side by side with the 5600?

@@watchmegobroke4365 A comparison would be cool, I have a 5600 but it doesn't wear that well on my wrist, I'm thinking about the 290 because it is slightly smaller.

Pretty cool…and it already has a touch of color on it, so Jon Mayer would have a harder time collabing with schmodinkee for a money grab collab….in the words of my girl Martha Stewart…”and that’s a good thing!” Edit: disco alarm makes for an instant win!

I’m a bit late to the game on this watch! My wife and I had never seen the mi movies and tonight watched the first 2 and I heard about the ugly Casio cruise wears in the first movie so while watching the movie I saw it on his wrist and I had to order one right after the 2nd movie lol! Ugly? Ah maybe,but for some reason I really like it!

You didn't need to use a dremel my friend. 30 seconds of a light rub with a, very small amount of nail polish remover will literally just wipe it off.

I tell you what. If casio were to bring this design back, and make it solar.. I’d wager to say that my g shock squares would get less wrist time
