Watch collecting, like many other hobbies, can have its snobs who act as gatekeepers and put down newer enthusiasts. I dislike that kind of sentiment and truly believe watches are for everyone and anyone. So today, we're going to be taking a look at around 20 watches that you just can't hate, no matter how big of a watch snob you may be. These are picks that are well-known, well-respected, and all under $1,000. Let’s go.

A good watch is a watch you like. Not what other people like. I like to spend no more than a couple hundred dollars in my watches, it allows me to buy lots of various styles versus me having only one or two really expensive watches. I’m a budget guy as you can see

@@Visitor555 If your a shrewd businessperson I am sure you could but it is not something I would recommend people to buy as an investment. It is not so easy to liquidate should the need arise, unless you have one of the few watches that are popular at the time. Just as in any business there is money to be made in flipping anything of value but that would be a job more than an investment in my eyes. I have thought about buying an expensive, over 10k watch as an investment I can enjoy but if I buy the wrong one and people stop being as interested in collecting watches I'm screwed. Better to stick the money into some mutual funds, a retirement fund or even crypto currency imo.

@@noequal5401 I could not agree more. I have a couple of watches around the $1500 mark and I really do appreciate those pieces but I wear my couple of hundred dollar watches a lot more often. In fact I have a $50 quartz Diver made by Crofton on my wrist right now. I usually prefer mechanical but I will sometimes rock a quartz cuz this looks so nice & if it were a real Rolex hulk I would never take it out of the box..lol

you can. The case is to never buy them for retail prices, only on discounts. Seiko 5 is one of the cheapest automatics on the market, and for less than a 100$ it's a very good watch, but above this price it's not. Poorly made bracelets, easy to destroy plastic crystal, movement comparable to old soviet watches. But the price makes it cool to have few of them in your collection, when you don't want to have just one watch for every occasion. The real seiko starts from the presage series. Citizen's cheapest models also are "cheap" in terms of usage, you can feel that the materials aren't meant to last long. Especially the NJ0100 series. If you want to buy a citizen, look for radio controlled models, because that's something unusual.

Hey Teddy. Brilliant video. So happy to see "entry" level watches getting some focus. So many YT watch channels have developed into Haute Horology Unobtanium (for most average enthusiasts) and just scare newcomers away. These kind of videos make you feel like you don't need to be a millionaire to enjoy the hobby and pick up some amazingly good value, quality watches in the process. Love the channel by the way. The 70 watch terms video was awsome too 👌

Citizen Garrison/Chandler (green fabric strap) is my favourite watch. I challenge any watch to suffer how my Garrison did & survive. The watch was lost during a home re-hab project. Eventually gave up searching, moved on, bought a new Citizen eco-drive. After 1 year, to the week, raking around the garage, I found my missing watch! In a dirt pile for 12 months of rain and Wisconsin snow. I was so happy. Cleaned with a rag. Left in the sun for a day. Wearing it now, works perfect.

The crown doesnt screw in properly, so its no longer watertight, and I need to get it serviced. But its a watch I dont think I could ever get rid of even if I ended up buying a something like a rolex or grand seiko

Thank you Teddy for being one of the most accessible channels for new watch enthusiasts. You are right. Many watch collectors want to treat the hobby like an exclusive club. They dismiss people, outright, if they have no interest or cannot afford brands above a certain price point. In an industry which is being disrupted and whose market share is being eroded by the emerging smart watch market, we cannot afford to be elitist. If history teaches us anything, an industry that is being rendered obsolete by technology can only survive if those who are part of that industry are more welcoming of newcomers.

I was so glad to see Vostok mentioned! Back in the early days of the Internet, I got really into Russian watches, not so much because they were great or anything, but because, in the West, they were unusual. So cool to have the Cyrillic writing on the case backs and on the dials of my Vostok, Poljot, and Kremlienskie watches. I think these were the first mechanical watches I ever owned, coming on nearly 20 years ago now, so I wasn't familiar with the idea that you had to wind them up every day, lol. Brand snobs are those who believe anything without 100% "in house" movements and 300 years of continuous history etc. etc. Every brand starts somewhere, they forget that the entire swiss industry got started by making bootleg copies of the French and British clocks of the time

However, I just got my first professional job where I’ll be attending marketing meetings and giving presentations. I’m in my early twenties and I’m trying to save money, but I also don’t want to be subconsciously judged by possible investors or potential partners. So I’m trying to find watches I actually want and like, while also being respected enough to wear in a formal professional setting. This video was an awesome start to my research. Definitely considering a few of these. Thank you!

I had a Tissot V8 (Quartz) for the longest time and it was, and still is, a really great watch. Recently though, I took the plunge for my first automatic with a Certina DS Podium, and it's great! After wearing a Tissot for so long, I was looking for something fresh and eventually settled on this. Probably a less known brand than Tissot but their designs are timeless and impeccable and the for about 300 bucks I'd say it's something to consider for anyone looking for an entry-level swiss made automatic.

About 8 years ago, I bought a pre-owned Citizen Eco-Drive E111-S039983 field watch. It is such a great watch and it looks really on my wrist. I wear it every day and my respect for Citizen and the Eco-Drive technology grows bigger every day, as well. I don’t like the “mall watches” Citizen makes, Teddy mentions, but this one just hit a different spot.

Each one has a trick or treat, like playing a Phillip Glass composition, or spinning the hands in both directions to start the timer, but my favorite is a Hamilton. I have watches that are fun, like a giant orange faced Body Glove, or a tall red Alessi that wears a rubber suit, a very old Swiss Army watch with a mesh strap, A Mickey Mouse and a Tintin, a fake Movado from the streets of NY (a Fauxvado) a digital watch with a secret camera and some classic Timex models.

If he did not explain himself, a watch is not only a serviceable tool of timekeeping, but one of the few accoutrements appropriate for men. A favorite watch says a whole lot about who you are and what you value. Like a good suit. It doesn't have to be outlandish, but if it fits and supports your appearance, it says volumes without a single word.

I believe the seagull 63 stands up to scrutiny the best, when you consider the mechanics and the price, it might be the one the snobs want to hate the most but if they are being honest with themselves it’s only because they paid 100x the price for their Swiss made column wheel chrono. A true enthusiast will surely appreciate the movement and the sacrifice made when trading the name on the dial for the intricacies inside the case.

The seconds hand never lined up with any of the indices, of course the chapter ring is known not to anyway. In the end I took it back for warranty and when I got it back it ran worse. I sold it immediately and was happy that at least due to the cult status of the SKX, it sold for what I paid for it. I’ve been wearing my Vostok with 2209 movement for 25 years. No service.
