Casio Casiotone MT-52 keyboard (1985) with SuperDrums!!
All sounds you hear in the track were made using the Casio MT-52 and recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, reverb, delay and chorus were added as required. The drums are from the MT-52’s onboard rhythm options, which are generated by an analogue source and as a result are fat and groovy…
The aim of these videos is to see what you can create using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools. The MT-52 wins points just as a beatbox alone with its Super Drums feature, which allows for individual drum elements (kick, snare, conga, hi-hat) to be switched to one of 3 different pattern variations within a rhythm selection, allowing for plenty of customisation. The 16-Beat rhythm is an instant winner; so much groove...

you are Legend. takes me back almost 40 plus years back to my school times, where our catholic brother of our parish church had borrowed this from his friend for the Xmas mass and it came to me for rehearsals.. i was quite kicked by the sound when it was sent through the PA system, and in one serendipitous mistake, i happened to plug it into the guitar effects pedal of the guitarist who had gone for a break and man... it sounded like nothing before.. memories

This was my first keyboard. I later got the Casio MT 500 with sampled drum sounds which at that time was impressive. Later on I had professional equipment but I still love the 80s charming keyboards. Today's home keyboard are kind of boring and I wish the could make those cool mini keyboards again with sampling (casio sk, Yamaha vss), drumpads and so on. I hope I can find a mt52 someday. So much nostalgia when I see and hear it . It was the beginning of my musical journey leading to playing A-ha, Jean Michel Jarre and Beethoven.

I want to thank you again for posting this video. Last week I bought a white MT-52 from a seller on Ebay. I find most of the patterns to be useful in some variation of the super drum switches. Whoever programmed the patterns most have been a pro drummer! I have a Roland R-8, when I switch between the factory patterns on the instrument, it doesn't sound homogeneous because different drum kits are used for the patterns but since the MT- 52 has only one kit, many of the patterns work well together. I noticed that the congas can be muted for every pattern, which makes sense. The MT-52 sounds ok as a synth but it's real worth is as a drum machine. I'm interested in adding MIDI to the instrument, I recall there was a DIY MIDI kit for the Casio SK-1.

Nice - yeah, I agree it's perfect as a groove-machine and easy to switch between rhythms and variations for variety during a song - the voices are just a bonus.

Masterful demo! 99% of folks, even with some keyboard playing ability, who come across this crappy lil Casio 80s home keyboard wouldn't be able to churn out this nice-sounding, enjoyable composition using only the Casio as the sound source (I do this same thing, I always process the audio of the device I'm demoing because in any use context that's what you'd be doing too so not only do you show the device in the best light, its the more representative of the best result you can achieve using it). But don't underestimate how much processing like dynamics (which is masterfully applied) improves the signal, what you'd be getting straight from the Casio doesn't sound like this - if you buy one and want it to sound like this you can, just be sure to not expect this level of sound until its been treated (we treat all synths, I don't mean to suggest the effect processing is just to make up for its definiciences. Any good synth demo should and will do the same thing). Alfonse, I am going to use this video as my standard for how to do a great gear demo video. I love everything about the way you've done it. Nice work!

Thanks, Dave! I do less processing now compared to these earlier videos, but the idea was always to create a whole track, so there will inevitably be some processing in the mixing and mastering - as you say, that's just the process and it shows the potential of the keyboard as a sound source. Glad you enjoyed it.

Wow, This must be one of the best demos for a keyboard I ever heard! Were the Super Drums an inspiration for the track? I have a Korg Kronos and find the Karma setup for the drum patterns to be limiting and incoherent. Most of the patterns lock the kick, snare and hi hat together and the Karma variations are unpredictable. I've own several drum machines, it seems the Super Drums could be more inspiring than the TR-808!

  • @alfonsemusic

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! You're right, that 16-beat rhythm is a great groove and inspired the rest of the track, and being able to vary the different elements of the beat with the Super Drums is great for adding interest. Of course, they're still pre-programmed grooves and you might find you only like a couple of them, but this thing is certainly way cheaper than a TR-808, so could be worth a try...!

They are, but I sampled the drum sounds out and recreated the patterns in order to mix them better for the track - the hi-hats were a bit loud for my taste - so the part in the middle where the hi-hats drop out altogether isn't on the keyboard. Great grooves on this thing, though!

Hey there - not sure how much detail you need, but I plug a stereo mini-jack cable into the output on the back of the Casio - the other end of the cable has two large mono jack plugs which go into an audio interface (Focusrite) linked to my computer - I'm then using Logic to record and sequence the parts that I play. Hope that kind of answers the question!

The first thing to check with these old Casios is whether its powering on from from the batteries or the wall power supply that doesn't work. Have you tried both? If you're willing to open it up, the parts that are often at fault are the battery terminals (if they're corroded), the power supply input jack (mechanical failure) and the transistors near that input. Most old Casios lack any sort of polarity protection in the power supply circuit so those transistors can get blown if you try powering it from a power supply with the wrong polarity. These should all be relatively easy fixes, but sometimes the boards can be super corroded or the CPU might be shot, in which case it's usually not worth fixing

You can usually pick one up cheap on eBay, so not that rare. One of the last Casio home keyboards of the 1980s to feature analogue drum sounds, though, which tend to sound better than the PCM sampled drums that came afterwards.
