Did he have a choice? Even the hip hop rap people thought & said so that Johnny Cash should be the winner. Just saying.

Though I love most of his work, it seems like all his best stuff came out once he joined Rick Rubin, they allowed him to express himself like he couldn't before, so you got it deep from within the mans soul. It was pure art.

@@tylurmackinnon6217 I Don't think the stuff he did with Rick Rubin was trendy at all . The Sun Records and the American Recordings are both superb ! The most amazing thing about them is that he done them nearly 50 years apart.

I loved Johnny Cash all of my life.I owned a ton of his records and knew the words to every song LONG before American Recordings, and LOOOONG before the Hurt video. When his albums with American Recordings were released, it was wonderful to watch what happened as a life long Cash fan watching thier hero come back in a way that those who loved him knew he was capable of. Even though it's been nearly 10 years since he passed, I still come to tears thinking about how I felt that day. Luv ya John

Johnny Cash to my knowledge was one of the first American superstars who actually grew old before they died. Elvis and Hendrix all died young. Johnny Cash held power at the end his light and we got to see the flame burn to the wick. There is something magical about that.

i met him after or before his concerts many times! simply a great man in every way. i love him and his music. he will always be there, because he made a better world....

It is shameful to know that Johnny was singlehandedly responsible for Columbia records in Tennessee existence and growth at a certain point and to see how their executives brush off their fuck up. Country music is just the box he is mostly put in but all music owes this guy gratitude. The Man in Black was the Fuckn Man! Period!!

I wish everyone had a chance to record with Rick Rubin. True creative vision. Finds a way to expose the best of what the artist has to offer. As opposed to the commercial producers who look at an artist and only see what glossy they can slap over them to get some quick cash

I was raised 30 miles from CASH! Kidnapped in his hometown as a child in the mid 70's. CASH made sure the man paid for doing that to me. CASH is justice. He is my hero. Always has been!

Really?! Now that is a story I would love to hear more about. If you are willing to share. That is justice just like you said. The more I learn about Johnny the more I admire him. He really got screwed by the people he gave an existence to when the were close to withering away. People were tired of the Grand Old Opry churchy everything is great style of country music. That's why he was so successful. Him and the likes of Waylon Jennings and Willy Nelson especially when that Outlaw stuff was released changed not just country music but music in general. I don't think the impact on all music Jonny had is really known because of the industry's blackballing especially after that crap FCC law was passed. That was the choke hold the powers that be needed to control what was heard on the radio. We still see it today with TV and the news that we are fed. Anyway I am way of point. I would like to hear more about your story and how Johnny got involved. Have a good one.

Great documentary. it was so great of Rick Rubin to give Johnny the chance to sing the songs he'd always wanted to record and bring him success in his later life. The Country Music industry sure stuck the finger up at him when Columbia Records dropped him (how could they?? Johnny Cash helped BUILD Columbia Records!)....but The Man in Black flicked the finger right back at them!! Man...I love Johnny Cash!!

I've grown up outside of Nashville and even once worked for Johnny Cash. CMA Awards have always been rigged in favor of record companies artist publicity and sales. CMA is never about the music it's about who's popular at the time. Johnny Cash never was for sale or awards that that new artist seek and thought it could make them or break them. But none of that could Define who is Johnny Cash. The man in Black was so cool and classy and truly a artist who did things his way.. even when he had the number one rated National syndicated TV show on CBS. Going against TV executives and what they wanted he had music artist from every type and style of music and performers of every color the man in Black would not compromise who he was for what Executives wanted him to be. Performed and recorded live at Folsom Prison record companies had a fit he said F.U. and the album went number one. Then they really got upset when he did gospel albums which happened to be his favorite type of music against music industry executives and he told them the same thing and it went number one. Every song every album every performance he always performed as though is was his last one. I don't say this because he's dead I don't say this to sound like I know it all , I say this because I knew Johnny Cash. And has cool and classy generous great and all the things you could possibly say about cash. Really does not do him Justice. Johnny Cash was the average man with a special set of skills. He enjoyed life and always try to add more to it than he could take away from it that was Johnny Cash. The average everyday man's friend

@elviravp Me too!!! I knew where I was when Johnny Cash died, I was very sad and shocked. I love his music and that he combined country, rock, folk, etc. It's pure art. Johnny talked about the underworld he saw and yet he was a humble soul. He will always be cool to me.

@kevinarnold1976 I loved this documentary too. I was stunned to hear how Johnny got mistreated by the business but at least Rick Rubin gave Johnny a voice that to me is cool. I also think it's cool Justin Timberlake paid tribute to Johnny Cash on stage. Very nice speech do you agree?

What's been described in these 5 videos was the beginning of the end of good commercial country music. This is an industry where CMA still hasn't acknowledged Hank Jr for the Hall of Fame, for crying out loud. It's been going on a long time, someone as good as Randy Travis even had to be denied repeatedly before he made it big, & that was in the 80's. But from the mid-90's on, the bulk of what's played on the radio has been pure crap. Bubble gum pop is the kindest way to say it. & a bunch of acts that are here today, gone tomorrow. It's nice that CMA honored Cash w/some awards in '03 after he passed, but the industry returned to all its old tricks. I haven't listened to mainstream country radio for yrs, & unless something major changes, the independent formats & stations that play the classic country are all we have.

I've watched this documentary 3 times now. Fuck CMT and Warner and Universal and Columbia and Ryman Auditorium from day one.

The genuine country music died since Johnny Cash died . I was born very late but I appreciate most the music of Johnny Cash than the music now of my young generation . I must say that the music of Johnny Cash are all very meaningful while the music of my generation today , to me they are just adding pollution in the air because they are not music but NOISE (´ε｀ )
