The thing that always strikes me about Johnny Cash is his class. Polite, honest and a great conversationalist. Not to mention funny and extremely talented of course.

True.. The Whirled is less without Waylon & Johnny BUT they are finally at Peace. Both Johnny & Waylon were never part of the "Program" and till this Day Both their Music & Their Legends live on among their fans. Billy Joe Shaver summed this attitude up in his song "Live Forever" which was sung by Robert Duval in "Crazy Heart". Johnny & Waylon are both still the same and I am happy they never turned into what most of "country" has become, lil more than propaganda for the goober-mint. The Truth is that Neither of them were ever sell outs.. & i am glad they weren't...

Johnrap11 Facts. I have to say that it is strange; myself finishing highschool in 99 and off to college there after. I have had to sort of straddle the 'line', if you will. I preferred memorizing phone number's in my head, etc Managing, these college cat's now and hanging out has garnered some interesting revelations. Of course we will all experience this world and change. Watching Johnny's, Riding The Rail's, show's change, but nothing like, I'll say it, this Orwellian'esc social change..... Hopefully, we the people will bring some love and straight shooting back. Yet, regain the 'rainbow & butterflies', America, I knew until that horrible day in 2001. Take care.

I admire these superstars for taking so much time to talk about addiction and finding freedom.
Never got to see Johnny Cash live before he passed, One of the biggest regrets of my life.
I loved Waylon's and Johnny's music at the age of 6, I still love their music. The best concert that I have ever been to was the Highwayman show in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1991. They played for well over three hours, they played band hits, their own individual hits, and all the duet hits, June even came out on stage and sang with Johnny!

We ARE talking OUTLAWS!!! The BEST of country music.
Two legends who experienced and saw a great deal of change. Waylon in February, 1959 was part of Buddy Holly's band. Waylon played electric bass, Tommy Allsup was the backup guitarist and Carl Bunch was the drummer. Waylon on the night of February 3 gave up his airplane seat to J.P. (the big bopper) Richardson. Five minutes after takeoff the plane crashes killing Holly, Richardson and Ritchie Valens who had one a flip with Allsup. The last exchange between Holly and Jennings was Holly telling Waylon " I hope you freeze your ass off on the bus". Waylon fired back "Yea! I hope your old plane crashes". Cash started on Sam Phillips Sun Record label in Memphis. Johnny was on the label at the same time as Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. There is an old photo where Elvis is at a piano and Johnny, Jerry Lee and Carl are also in the photo. What a jam session that would have been.

I LOVE these 2 wonderful Legends, @ to sit @ tell us all about there dirty drug habits. I really appreciate how both of them were so very honest with , Letterman. I absolutely loved Waylon ,he was @ still is my no one American Country music favourite singer of all times and then Charley, @ Johnny Cash 3rd. We shall never ever get to see another singer like Waylon, he had such a unique style voice that no one shall ever be able to sing like our Waylon Jennings. May they all RIP NOW ELIZABETH IRELAND ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love both these guys' honestly. Not like the young brats who deny their addictions. Waylon had many years(from early 80's) of heavy labored breathing (lungs shot) the the diabetes( had his right foot amputated) and heart problems. He moved to Chandler AZ with Jessi & Shooter and that basically gave him more years with us. Both Jessi & June were obviously strong women:) John/Waylon music icons & best friends. We have 4 generations of fans in my family.
Sure do miss Jonny Cash

I met Johnny Cash in his Ventura CA office in early 1960's. A small office with 1 desk & top was full of cash. I asked secretary why all the cash & she said he only accepts cash. He gave me autographed photo & still have it. I was 1 year older than him, so had same poverty childhood during 1930's.

Two great music icons!! Keeping it real.
Waylon is my favorite. If you go to his hometown Littlefield, TX his brother JD runs a liquor store and museum called Waymores. It's amazing what he has in there and he's the nicest guy. Must stop for any true country music fan.
UNFORGETTABLE the two of them !!!!
I had to come back and watch this again, I miss both of these legends that much. Letterman clowns around (used to) with most of his guest's , but here you can clearly see he conducted himself with a little caution..grace ..and respect.. R.I.P. JC and WJ.
What a great piece. A treasure for all music lovers! Letterman -- what a lucky person!
You will never see another pair of country singers like Waylon and Cash. Fantastic upload!!
Sends a little chill through a body seeing them together like that... With them being the first to uh... Leave the band Highwaymen for the Choir Invisible. Don't ya just hate when band members leave one band for another? [sad cheeky grin] Miss you both fellas. Keep those angels hoppin'. We don't want them gettin' too lazy now.
R.I.P boys. You both are sadly missed.
Johnny Cash And Waylon Jennings .. That my friends IS Country Music !
Good men, good music, good stories -- sure wish they were still around.
This made my evening. Thanks so much for uploading this. Cash entered the Betty Ford Clinic on December 20th, 1983, after an addiction to painkillers. He says on Letterman (above) that he's been clean for 14 months, so the date of the Letterman taping is probably around March 1985.
JOHNNY HAS SO MANY APPERIENCES AND HELPS THOSE WHO NOONE ELSE WANTS TO! hE IS A TRUE HERO: THE MAN IN BLACK.. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG. AND PROUD OF HIM FOR ALL THE NATIVE AMERICAN SONGS, STORIES AND OPINIONS AND IS A VERY WISE MAN
This is marvelous. I read Johnny's autobiography and loved it.
Dang - I sure wanted to hear them sing! But what a great interview!
"I kept a hammer in one pocket and pain killers in the other." LMFOA. We were blessed with The Man In Black! Thanks for posting.
Yes this is about 1985. I saw Waylon's last show before he cleaned up. It was in Saskatoon SK in 1984 and he talked about how he had a "bum tooth" and had to cancel the rest of his West Canadian tour to go get his tooth fixed back in the US. Of course he flew home and told Jesse to clean out every spec of cocaine she knew he had stashed. Then she took him to a clinic and he totally cleaned up and never touched a thing ever again in his entire life...

Great that Johnny and Waylon open to, and wanting to, talk about their drug addiction and recovery. 1985 was still high coke time on the West Coast and pre-awareness of treatment. Thank goodness times have changed. Who makes all the money on licit and illicit drugs?

Great interview! Too short of course. Boy, you'll never see that kind of honesty and directness with any modern celebs or musicians, everyone's all about p/c and evading real life issues. Johnny Cash man! ...once in a lifetime, that's how often you'll meet someone like that in your life!! :) :)

Cash was likely the most influential American musical performer of the 20th Century, but there were others, too. Louis Armstrong introduced the improvisational solo to sound recordings in the late 1920s. Every lead guitar player from Hendrix to Clapton to Eddie to Prince to Page owes a debt to Louis, whether they realize it or not. Dylan had a tremendous influence on the entire musical landscape of the 1960s and later. The Beatles totally changed the way they wrote lyrics after Bob told them, "The music is great, but you're not saying anything." (Their reply was, "You're saying a lot, but the music isn't." Dylan took that to heart too, much to the chagrin of the folkie purists.) A lot of other writers and artists (including Cash) changed the way they approached lyrics in popular music after Dylan.
I love it thanks for sharing i never saw this david letterman .
Really funny! Johnny Cash had a fine sense of humour-Waylon too. And Letterman is actually good on this interview:)
