Cap & Ball Paper Cartidges with the Cliff Manley Tool

Спорт

In this video I’ll be making paper cartridges for .44 caliber cap & ball revolvers using Cliff Manley’s cartridge forming system. The bullets will be .44 caliber Johnson & Dow conicals, cast using an Eras Gone bullet mold.

RIP Cliff Manley. He came up with a very practical design that has become the standard in today's time frame for making Combustible Paper Cartridges for percussion cap&ball revolvers. Over the years I found discovered that Thin Wax Paper makes for the overall best non nitrited paper to use as casing material to make CPC'S with my Universal Bullets. To be exact; Thin Deli Wax Paper is the most effective non nitrited paper which is very durable, self combustable, sealing, protective of the gunpowder from Water, Oil, Blood Fluids Humidity etc. In a recent burn test a CPC case was made with the Thin Deli Wax Paper and ignited with Factory percussion Caps, Remington #10 as well as Home made percussion Caps with the use of the Prime All kit. The factory made percussion Caps left a burned hole penetraiting through the bottom of the CPC casing, the size of a pencil eraser. The home made caps caused more burn up of the CPC case. I've found that for something like cutting paper like this, a disposable scalpel is MUCH better at getting a clean consistent cut. They cost about the same as an exacto too. try it and I promise you won't regret it. I'm definitely interested in trying this myself, thanks for the tutorial!

Interesting! After I saw your original video on paper cartridges I developed a method using a tapered UHMW punch from a sight installation kit & a plastic ammo tray. I use (essentially) the same process. Circles & strips. But I use tissue (gift bag) paper & glue stick adhesive. In my Remington 1858 I get a pretty complete burn. Any way you go, it's a really, "fiddly" & tedious process, but, it's a bonus at the range. And with the extra cylinders for my Remington, I don't shoot fast, but I enjoy shooting more. Thank you, Sir!

I've always wrapped a rolling paper around a 38cal dowel rod twist up one end drop in the ball pour in my powder and fold the end shut. Then I unfold to pour powder and stick the whole paper and ball on top and ram it home slightly slower than just dropping the cartridge in but you can buy papers for 99 cents at the gas station

I hope duelist will follow niouts message below because looks like it is for indoor rubber bullet cartridges. For .36 or .44 cap and ball. Assuming the Flaubert blanks are available this might be practical for indoor fun at airgun noise levels.

I am new to you tube, however for a 44 cal. To load paper cartridges have you ever used 45 cal bullets? A lot of choice there. I shoot 454 round balls in my pietta, the 45 cal bullets measure 452. Just a thought. Thank you

Great video! Have you made any paper cartridges for the Ruger Old Army? I’m also looking at buying a conversion cylinder for the ROA. What size bullet mold should I use for a paper cartridge and also what kind of load data could you offer for reloading the cylinder cartridges? I have the Lee .456-200 now and also have a .457 sizer. The conical cast bullets are not offering much resistance in the ROA black powder cylinder, actually, if the bullet has too much lube on it, it sticks to the ram and rises when I remove the ram.

Dear Mike: Do you have a link for this tool, or for John Gurney's book? About Sodium Silicate: Years ago, a shooting companion used this to seal the top card wad on brass shotshells. This friend complained that the hardened water glass scratched the bores of his old shotgun. Have you any information about scratching from water glass? This system looks interesting, though it also looks tedious and slow, practice should probably speed up the production somewhat.

Try DUDA Deisel for this and for citric acid as well, they have rock bottom pricing. Citric acid in a hot water solution of about an ounce per quart cleans cases, even black powder fouled cases wonderfully, just soak, rinse and dry in a 200/250 degree oven.. The solution when used is nasty looking but good for several sessions. Back in the 50's we bought potassium nitrate by the dump truck loads, it is a very effective fertilizer used for commercial farming by the tons,

I've used Potassium Nitrate for over 85 years if I count all the fertilizer used in farming and gardening. This is a pretty benign substance given some basic precautions: don't eat it or drink the solution. you should probably not inhale the dust if there is any, probably one should glove up when mixing or handling the solution, oh yes, mixed with diesel fuel or gasoline it makes a potent explosive that can be dangerous and quite useful as well. There are no doubt thousands and thousands of substances more dangerous than Potassium Nitrate being used every day, it just got bad press because terrorists use it to make bombs. It was ANFO, Potassium Nitrate and Deisel mixed in the proper way that was used in OK City to blow up the Mura Federal building several years ago. Treated with respect, Potassium Nitrate is a useful fertilizer and chemical no need to fear it, just learn how to handle it and respect it, it is no more dangerous than many other substances like gasoline. Untold tons of it are used world wide for fertilizing crops. Just educate yourself and use good sense when handling it and all will be well.
