Paper Cartridge Boxes - An Easy wood project

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Back in the days of the Civil War, the troops would carry paper cartridges for their cap-and-ball revolvers, in small wooden boxes with a paper wrapping. Follow along as I make a somewhat "modern version" with a reusable, heavy paper sleeve stamped with a period correct logo on the front. This is yet another excuse to use the new Miter Saw too!

I made the .36 blocks by using a twist drill instead of a forstner bit the 7/16" twist drill works OK you just have to be careful about depth. Another great video thank you.

Pop-up ad during video for Leupold sunglasses. I didn't know they had sunglasses. Oh yeah, nice cartridge box too. Thanx for letting everyone know where they could have a custom stamp for a project like this made. I had no idea Staples did that sort of thing.

I made up some wood Ctg boxes back in the 90s. I drilled the holes as close together as I could and then sanded the outsides to as near the holes as I could. I wanted them to fit into the civil pistol cartridge box that I had. even so, three boxes would not fit into the leather box, vertically, On end, I could fit one vertically, then the other two could go in length wise, one on top of theother, But, The flap tab hole would not reach thefinial, so I had to cut another hole, to close the flap. I guess these leather pistol boxes arent made dimensionally well.

Thank you for showing us your process. I'm in the process of making paper cartridges for my Colt Pocket Model. The wood cartridge blocks look great! I think I want some. I was thinking about using a twist drill for the holes, the using a 1/4" Forstner to dress the bottom of the hole. If I can get the dimensions right it may make the cartridges easier to handle.

If possible, I would make each hole to be the exact size and shape as the cartridges, so there is no room for them to bounce around. Would keep them undamaged, but might be harder to build.

The paper cartridge kit is 3D printed but the boxes I made are all wood and drilled out like the originals were. (sort of, my drill press is electric) I didn't want to make an exact reproduction of the originals, they were a one-time use, then they were trash. Thanks for watching!

Entirely possible. I just wanted to make something that looked like it could have been around in that time period. The originals also had a string or wire that you would pull to tear open the package, I didn't want to make a "one time use" cartridge box though.
