Making 36 Caliber Paper Cartridges
Спорт
In this video I’ll demonstrate how to make .36 caliber paper cartridges using Balazs Nemeth’s, CapandBall cartridge former and Mark Hubbs, Eras Gone Colt Conical Ball bullets.
Balazs Nemeth is the host of the CapandBall channel, which I think is the best black powder channel on KZread. He has developed a former and mandrel system for assembling paper cartridges for cap and ball revolvers using either conical bullets, or round balls.
Mark Hubbs, the owner of Eras Gone Bullet Molds has recreated the actual conical bullets used during the Civil War. In this project I’ll be using bullets cast by his Colt Conical Ball mold.

You're right in saying that Cap'and'Ball has the best black powder channel, but having said that, yours is a very close second. Thanks for all the work you do, it's appreciated.
Well done sir! As an added bonus after making the cartridges you still have rolling papers to twist up a doobie with!
Sometimes found on eBay along with his cartridge boxes.
I also really enjoy the Cap & Ball channel, been following him for several years.

CAP & BALL IS GOOD, BUT FOR MANY THINGS THIS CHANNEL IS THE BEST. THIS "DUELIST 1954" CHANNEL HAS MANY VIDEOS ON BLACK POWDER, SO WHEN NO CHANNEL COVERS IT - GO TO MIKE'S DUELIST CHANNEL AND SEARCH.
I use 17grain 3fg swiss numer2, weight measured in my 50 year old Uberti with round balls, seems to like that, never tried conicals, great video about this conicals
You got yourself Mike, a good effective method of making Combustible Paper Cartridges for percussion cap&ball revolvers. Over the years I found discovered that Thin Wax Paper makes for the overall best non nitrited paper to use as casing material to make CPC'S with my Universal Bullets. To be exact; Thin Deli Wax Paper is the most effective non nitrited paper which is very durable, self combustable, sealing, protective of the gunpowder from Water, Oil, Blood Fluids Humidity etc. In a recent burn test a CPC case was made with the Thin Deli Wax Paper and ignited with Factory percussion Caps, Remington #10 as well as Home made percussion Caps with the use of the Prime All kit. The factory made percussion Caps left a burned hole penetraiting through the bottom of the CPC casing, the size of a pencil eraser. The home made caps caused more burn up of the CPC case. Thank you for a fascinating look into creating these loads.
I've been using both the forms from CapandBall and Guns of the west, these guys did a great job putting their respective kits together, my range time is much more enjoyable, now just waiting for the Kerr molds to be available once again......

I have Mark Hubb's 44 caliber Era's Gone Conical Bullet Mold and I made my own paper cartridge former for my 1858 Remington New Army revolver. I use a powder dipper for 19-21 grains of pyrodex P powder. I don't have the little base bit that you get from Cap-and-ball. Balazs Nemeth’s was going to send me a former set, but never got to it. I'm sure he's busy.

Well made! I like those cartridges.

Excellent demo Mike. My go to spot for cartridge making refresher courses and general plinking!Thanks!
Thank you for the tip on waxing the mandrel. It's the little things like that which make the difference. I was missing that before and heard you say that so I got up and grabbed a candle got my mandrel and made a cartridge and the difference was very noticeable. Thank you again dear sir!
There might be a faster way to cut out the bottoms for the cartridges. A leather hole punch or a cigar hole punch could do several pieces at a time. The Cigar punch, at least the zikar one I use for my cigars even has a function that would push the cut pieces out of it. I have just started down this rabbit hole that is ball n power shooting, but that seems to me like it could work well.

you can also get a .75 inch punch from Amazon that works really well too.
Would love to get my hands on a Cliff Manley original
Very informative video! Thanks Mike!
Interesting. Thank you.
Great video really enjoyed it thank you just getting started in this
Nice show Thanks
I feel like you could just glue the bullet roll the bullet and a dowel so its a straight cylinder pull the dowel powder charge then twist the end and snip it off and it would work just fine
Retiring in a year and hope to have enough time for my brace of cap and ball revolvers (Walker & '51 Navy).
Hi Mike! Great video, as always! I stopped using glue for sealing the bullet in the paper case because there were times when the glue would catch on the paper before seating all the way in causing the paper to buckle. Now I simply use thread around the first (bottom) lube groove (Lee conical) with a clove hitch. This mil-surp thread I have burns like fast fuse...I don't know why but I have two huge cones of it so am going to keep using it. This technique I use for my .44s. I haven't received my .36 caliber former set so I can't comment on that yet.
Cool stuff - I been using tissue paper and NITRATE model airplane dope from BRODAKS - its TOP of the line COMBUSTIBLE CARTRIDGES - totally favorite
Thanks Mike very nice kit. Old West Bullet Moulds sells that bullet, or one very close to it at a reasonable price. just for your information.

Where did you get the pore cap for the Swiss Powder? I've been looking for the same for my Goex Powder containers. THANKS...👍
Good information!! If i may ask, is the taper basically to facilitate removal of the load from the tapered hole? It will make loading your pistol easier too I guess? I am new to this so a lot to learn. Thanks

Yes to both questions
That Brass Funnel is a gem where did you get ?
i use zig zag kings cut them in half makes 2 per paper lube the bullets first and twist the small amount of remaining paper over the top loads great shoots good and way less steps not knocking your method it just works for me
Interesting, but I would think what it the real time saving while reloading? Is there an advantage to protect the powder in rain?
Say Mike....if it was 1859 & I was at a hardware store in, say "any town US" ...what was the price for the little box of 6 cartridges? Thanks for educating me on black powder shooting.
I assume the red box it where you store the cartdriges. What caliber or what bullet type is that box and do you use a different one for .44?
Have one of his .44 formers (pretty good former - though my mandrel is white , not black like your's)!
Mike, thank you for this video! There are a couple of options for the 44 cal, but the 36 cal is often neglected. Do they have 31 cal version for the totally neglected pocket models? The handle of the mandrel looks a little too big, like it would get in the way more than be useful. I can't imagine what the shipping would be like to send a complete set of them here! I'd probably have to hold up Evil Roy to afford a set!!!

Check out Guns of the West. He makes a kit for pretty much all of the pistol cartridges. His prices aren't too bad either.
I just made my first cartridge. Its .44 roundball with around 18 grains of pyrodex. Is it suppose to be so short? The paper was so long after putting the ball in I had to “circumcise” the paper and it still had excess paper around the ball.
Hey mike my 1860 army wouldnt go to full cock sometimes unless you cocked it really hard when i took the barrel wedge out and the cylinder off it would work fine so i knew it must be the hand or the bolt upon closer inspection the hand wasnt under enough spring tension so i took it all the way down and bent the hand spring out further and it worked fine with the barrel wedge in BUT im worried it might happen again if the spring took a set before it probably will again what would you suggest to remedy this?
Where did u get the red cartridge box in the background?
So you are just using cigarette papers, not prepared with potassium nitrate? And I take it that after loading when you fire the cap burns thru the paper and sets off the charge? Please forgive my ignorance as I am new to Black Powder. Thank you for showing how to do this
Can I cast round balls using shot. I’ve seen some people say not too because of the other stuff they put in there for hardness. Do you think it will hurt my revolver?
Mike, I noticed that you are using Swiss powder. Where are you able to purchase that powder. You did a great job with this video. Thank you

no hang fire for the primer to reach the powder with paper in the way? Or does the ram break open the powder?
@RandyHTFFforever

It is hard to see if the ram breaks the paper , I use nitrated coffee filters . never experienced A miss fire . cleaning the cylinder after shooting I find A lot of remnants of the paper base all packed nere the nipel end of the cylinder and all have A hole in the center . Now when I first started making paper cartridges this concerned me thinking the same thing , I have shot the gun to the point that I stopped due to fouling , have yet to experience A miss fire , I dip the made bullets in hot lube and have yet to experience A hang fire . I have come to the conclusion the burnt paper rings with A burnt hole is nothing to concern about it is the glue that doesn't burn as well as the rest . I have tried elmers and liquid glass and both have the same efecte .
@RandyHTFFforever

@Bill Randleman The paper cartridge former if used makes them all pretty unifored in dimensions , they are made with A taper the jonson and dow bullet has A undersized heal that the paper is wrapped around the bullet contacts at the lube grooves when put in A cylinder bore , but yes when you compress the cartridge it has to break the cartridge but I still find the base of the cartridges packed at the nippel end of the cylinder with A hole burnt in the center . When compressing the cartridge it is compressed against the nippel .

Tweezers or a pair of Needle Nose pliers would make handling/positioning the bullet, easier, i think.
I use 24 grains of 3fg pyrodex P powder. I'm new to black powder so I haven't purchased Mark's .44 conical mold, or any paper cartridge formers. I use my Uberti 1851 Navy plunger I bought to replace my Pietta Confederate Navy's plunger as a former. I use tissue paper because in my area it's cheap and easy to get because I live near, and have family members who work at the local P&G plant. I also have a question Mike. For my second black powder revolver I'd like to buy a Uberti 1847 Walker, would you recommend to buy one?
@frankyeyna9500

I have 3 Walkers , 1 is a San Marko use 40 grains 3F no more or you will Batter the wedge . I also have 2 Dragoons same load like the Dragoons better that the huge Walker , A matter of personal taste .
Hehehe. This amateur tried doing this a few years ago using Kleenex tissue paper, Elmer’s Glue and American Pioneer powder. It was hit or miss...or rather shoot or not. 50% boom, 50% pop (percussion cap only)
Does anyone know of a commercial supplier for .36 conicals using the Era Gone bullets? I am not setup for casting any longer and local lead for black powder is almost non existent anyway so don't mind paying for ready made bullets.
Next video: Shooting and reloading with these cartridges 🙂
When I was a young boy, Did you think I was going to start singing " King Tut,? my Grandfather bought me an 1862 Colt copy, built by Uberty . I shot that thing a lot. no paper cartridges. very few misfires.. Forget about paper cartridges, This is my opinion. on this subject. However since I have already made a couple hundred of them, I will now tear the bottom off and dump and load, it will save a little time, and I hope to see the reliability return to an acceptable level.
What size Ammo box do you use? I was thinking 38 special for .36 cal or 9mm box.

Have you noticed any reduction in cap blow off into a cap jam by using paper cartidges?
@duelist1954
Жыл бұрын
No.
I own three .36 caliber Colts. One is an original 1851 Model and the other two are Uberti. I have never had to make paper cartridges for shooting any of these guns. I can shoot conical bullets in all of them and have never had to worry about loading them fast. I can load any of these guns just using powder bullet and cap with Crisco as a grease on top and can load them probably just as fast as somebody using paper cartridges. I have never had a chain fire and never will using my method of loading one cylinder at a time. However more power to you if you want to take the laborious task of doing that. To me a round ball is easier and more accurate than a conical in any or these weapons. That is what they were meant to be loaded with anyway.

TBull Cajunbreadmaker Making combustible cartridges allows the shooter to experience loading and firing C&B revolvers by the method in most common use by 1860. About 99% of the revolver projectiles recovered from Civil War battle locations are conical bullets, primarily .36 & .44 caliber. The only C&B revolver intended to fire only round balls was the Colt Paterson. From the Walker Colt forward, all Colt revolvers were rifled to accurately fire conical bullets. Upon Colt Patent expiration in 1857, as Whitney, Starr, Remington and other revolvers appeared, all revolver manufacturers included a double cavity mold that had one conical and one round ball cavity, as did all Colt molds from early 1847 Dragoon models onward. Combustible revolver cartridges were in widespread use by 1858, and made by many manufacturers other than Colt, and all revolver combustibles used conical bullets. Uberti replica revolvers tend to fire conicals more accurately than round balls due to the faster rifling twist that is pretty close to the same twist rate of the final twist near the muzzle of original Colt's and Remington's gain-twist rifling. Watch more of Duelist1954's videos on C&B revolvers and you will see that conicals usually shoot tighter groups than round balls, especially if the replica revolver is a Uberti. Also look up the Cap And Ball channel referenced by Duelist1954 in this video, where original Colts are fired in comparison to the Uberti replica, and both Original and Uberti replica revolvers fire conical bullets VERY accurately.

Mike, I have been watching your channel for a long time. Always enjoy your videos. I just thought I would share something with you. I have experimented with several different papers; cigarette papers, coffee filters, Perm papers, etc. I am sure you have done the same. Recently I have been using gift wrap tissue. It is about as thick as the cigarette paper and a whole lot cheaper. I can buy a pack at the Dollar General for a buck and it would make several hundred loads. It works great for me. I fired about 300 rounds last week and only had 2 shots that didn't fire. I don't think the fault was the paper. I think it was just a couple of weak caps. I have never tried nitrating the paper but plan on doing so later just to see if it is worth the time for me. Have you ever nitrated your paper? And if so, could you tell any difference?
@duelist1954

Sometimes the bottom paper doesn't burn away or leave the chamber. Be sure to clear the chamber before reloading. The last thing you want is a smoldering ring of cartridge paper when you ram in a fresh cartridge, or premature ignition may occur.

You mean with capandball's former? Mike said in the video that the former works with round balls and even showed the dotted like you cut to with the template for them.
Could you make cartridges containing powder only and seal the bullet end? I prefer shooting balls. This would certainly speed up the loading process!
@duelist1954

Sure, but you can make them with balls too.
The 44 will work when using the 1858 New Model Army. Removing cylinder makes things easier. The revolver you show can't be removed as easley, but I know you know this. I get my bullets & lube same place as you stated.. But I use a different 44 bullet. They have many variants. I have the same set from capandball. Thier are different ways of making paper bullets. I like how capandball does it. I use superglue for example.
I'm 64, by the time I finish 1 I will be 65 ,,,,,Ha Ha, thx for info.
Maybe this should be a livestream.

Ło matko, po co się tak mordować., można zrobić tutki z bibułki do petów, zakręcić i git. 2 dni robić takie patrony? bez sensu jak życie bez kredensu :D :P
These are massively over engineered and time inefficient...not to mention the glue on the back end will likely give you reliability issues. Here is a better method; Take a slightly sub cal dowel, Cone roll your cig paper around it, Drop the bullet into the wide end and twist it closed, Remove the dowel, Pour your powder in, Pinch the open paper and shake the powder down like a sugar packet, Twist it closed. Clip the excess paper off the twisted ends. And repeat.
Hi, how many grains are you loading?
are you using nitrate paper?
