The vestibular system is located in the brain, and it controls balance and proprioception. This system constantly maintains these abilities as the body moves into different positions.
If the vestibular system is impacted, it can develop vertigo. This can make someone feel like they are moving when they are not and cause sudden dizziness when changing positions.
Scoliosis can impact balance, thus causing vertigo in some patients. It can also cause equilibrium problems where the person can feel as if they can't stand properly and drive impact on proprioception by not knowing where the body is in space.
The most common example is when scoliosis patients think and feel that they are standing up straight, but, in reality, their torso is leaning towards one side.
Some studies suggest a link between vertigo and scoliosis. When the writing reflexes are affected, this causes a postural deviation that can lead to bone remodeling during growth that eventually causes structural scoliosis.
Scoliosis can also cause other types of dizziness due to the postural shift that occurs. The condition can also impact the cerebrospinal fluid, and when this happens, it can lead to balance changes and headaches.
It is important to be proactive and address scoliosis as soon as the diagnosis is official. If dizziness or proprioception issues develop as a symptom of the condition, a specialist must examine the body to create the most effective and functional treatment plan possible.
