Scoliosis can affect the spine in many ways. It is the development of an unnatural sideways curvature of the spine with rotation.
The condition is classified based on the size of the Cobb angle of the curve when taken on an X-ray. The size of the curve oilseed does not determine how much pain the patient will feel due to the scoliosis.
Mild: Cobb angle measurement of 10-25 degrees
Moderate: Cobb angle measurement of 26-40 degrees
Severe: Cobb angle measurement of 40-80 degrees
Very severe: Cobb angle measurement 80 degrees or greater
Scoliosis is more comely painful in adult patients since this is when the condition worsens due to compressive forces, not growth. As a result of gravity, over time, the spine and surrounding tissues and muscles are more vulnerable to compression.
The main symptom of scoliosis in adults is pain, and the most common area is the low back. Because of this unnatural curve, the spine is contracting these muscles asymmetrically, leading to muscle pain or tightness.
The main diagnostic feature of scoliosis in children and adolescents is postural changes. They don’t commonly feel pain as their progression is based on their growth.
Scoliosis can cause many types of issues. Lumbar scoliosis can affect the lower extremities, such as hip, knee, or ankle pain. The more weight one site takes on versus the other, the more common it is to see degeneration. With thoracic scoliosis, it is common to see rib pain as a result of the ribs arching. Cervical scoliosis can affect shoulders with feelings of pain or tightness as the nerves in the area are compressed. You may see the shoulders become uneven. It can also lead to headaches when spinal fluid doesn’t flow properly due to the compression of the spine.
If you have scoliosis and are experiencing symptoms or discomfort, we recommend treating the scoliosis when it is small, as it will progress over time. Treating curves earlier commonly provides better results. At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer proactive treatment to reduce the curve and help prevent other problems from appearing.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis at 66 years old. Prior to this the only issue I had was lower back degenerative disease but it was manageable. I fell 5 years prior to the scoliosis diagnosis. I went to urgent care It happened to have an orthopedist on call who told me I had an old injury. He said my lower back had been fractured possibly 10 to 15 years earlier. I couldn't remember when it happened although I'd had a car injury back in 1984 where my car flipped over and I remember having a soreness in my lower back that I was in my early thirties. My chiropractor said a fracture in the lower back might not have been that obvious so I guess it's possible. I was checked for scoliosis as a child and was not diagnosed. I was very active as a child. I played basketball 4 years in high school, and avid walker and jogger, always working out and doing exercises, still jogging well into my forties. It was only until I started a stressful job and quit exercising in my '50s that I started having issues. I was 65 when I was diagnosed with scoliosis but according to the chiropractor he says it appears the injury in my lower spine could have started the scoliosis. Sorry for so much detail. I've gone to physical therapy three different times. The last time they used dry needling which seem to help with the pain. I just stopped therapy two weeks ago and even though I'm doing most of the exercises three times a week the pain has increased substantially. I can definitely tell the pain is much different with scoliosis than with the lower back degenerative disease. The pain from scoliosis hurts me in my ribs and side right below my breast. It is sometimes unbearable. My scoliosis specialist recommended a back brace even though my posture had improved substantially from the physical therapy the pain has not. I got the back brace and each time I want it I've been in more pain not less. . I took it today to my chiropractor who told me that it would do more harm than good. He said I will be losing muscle mass and that he would recommend not wearing it. I use a tens unit and continue my exercise for physical therapy. I use ibuprofen and gabapentin for pain. My spinal specialist wants to do surgery but I've heard it's a years recovery. I also was told I need to see a neurosurgeon for a second opinion before proceeding down any road. I enjoy your videos they've always been very helpful. Can you give me any recommendations or clarify and correct any information I have that may not be accurate. Thanks so much for your kindness and consideration.

I’m 55 and had scoliosis surgery when I was 15. I am now having severe pain throughout my entire spine and back. Also having hip pain and shoulder pain. What I find strange is that I’m having pain in my thoracic area and that’s where my ribs are.

@bjacob9998 hi, the orthopaedic surgeon told me that due to my spine being weak, it was too dangerous to get surgery. So I use morphone patches, lots of pain killers , lots of heapads tens machines ,massagers , body support tubi magnet belts, back supports ,lots of things. I'll try anything to see if it helps. I did have physiotherapy bit she was asking me to do some things that I found near impossible and having read about some of the exercises ,some of them should not be done when you have Scoliosis. So I just get on with it myself!! Hope physio helps you. 😊
