Can Am Spyder Oil Change. How To change your oil in a Can-Am Spyder with a Rotax 1330 engine.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Changing your Oil in your Can-Am Spyder is not only important but by doing it yourself you can ensure it is done right and save money at the same time. This video shows you how I change my oil in my 2018 Spyder F3 that has the Rotax 1330 engine.
The only thing I strongly recommend you don't cut corners on, is purchasing the Oil Change Kit designed specifically for you Can-Am Spyder engine. Can-Am had a company specifically create a custom Synthetic Blend oil just for them. To my understanding it is a higher blend on the Synthetic side that other oils don't compare to.
To purchase the oil you can do so from a dealership, which I recommend doing to support them, or you can go to Amazon and also through Can-Am's online store (they only deliver to certain areas and US is not one of them).

great vid! clearer and more thorough than most of the others. 👍 I did my 2021 F3-T last night. I was able to get to the filter without removing the brake fluid reservoir.... it's tricky but once you get it, you realize what you need to do and why most people can't and it's very satisfying 😀 (I used a CTA tools low profile 36mm socket with a 3/8 torque wrench. Fits perfectly in the tight space. Then, wiggling the filter and centre stick out is another technique all together). . Question: the owner's manual makes reference to oil capacity WITH and WITHOUT HCM oil filter change. Apparently there's a second filter that no one talks about. Does anyone know what it is and whether or not it's necessary to change it every time?

Hello Theodore, Absolutely great question and awesome that you pay attention to the manual! There is another filter that is called HCM. In your manual you will notice that it recommends replacing it every 28,000 miles. Now there will be talk back and forth in forums whether you should change this every oil change or at this time or that. I go to manuals written by experts when I need answers. So that is why I put what is in the manual for you. It will not hurt to change it every time you change your oil, and I will be changing mine every 2nd oil change myself or once a year. I will have a future video when I do mine because my first was through the dealer. Until then (and I am saying this the best I can) on the throttle side of the bike, or the right if your sitting on it, is the side with the HCM. It is at the bottom towards the front of the silverish color part of your motor. It should be a black plastic cover (About the size of an average hand) with I think 6 bolts (could be 5 maybe). That entire black plastic is the HCM. You can order it seperate from the oil change. It will have a o-ring and gasket on it new (or should have one) so BE SURE that the old ones are removed!!!!!!!! When you drain the oil, take it off, wipe everything down, then put the new one on, being sure to put some oil on the o-ring first do not install dry. I don't have the torque settings right off the top of my head but will include them in the future video, but you can also ask when you purchase the filter what the torque needs to be and they should be able to tell you. Being new, you will need to add extra oil. Other than on an RT model it is easy to do. Hope this answered everything for you and I will pin this to the top for others to see! Thanks for the support and question!

Absolutely "top drawer" excellent material in this video. That little tube behind the brake reservoir had me stumped, the manual says to remove it with bent needle nose pliers but no mention or hint as to which direction to pull it loose. My dealer did the first service oil change on my 2020 RTL this past spring, most expensive oil change I've ever paid for. After watching this video, I now have the visual and great tips to handle the 2nd oil change myself and save on the dealer oil change labor. You sir, just saved me some coin, very much appreciated. 😁👍👍

It is hard to see when working on it, but a long needle nose plier does help! It falls out easily but you just have to remember to find it if you dont have pliers. It can be pulled to either side but is easier to pull toward the direction of the back tire. Please use the BRP oil though, it is actually a better blend than you can get off a shelf! Glad I could help and appreciate all the support and conments!!

@@MOABMAN i fully agree regarding BRP oil, I'll buy the BRP oil change kit. Now if only I can find the Kenda Kanine rear tiree, no one had it stock, the OE cost me $373 installed 2 weeks ago, ouch, and I'll pribably wear it out this time next fall, 1st tire lasted just over 12 months 9200 miles (about 1500 of those miles towing a Mini Mate camper which contributed to the tire wear)., wasn't bald yet, but the tread was right at the wear bars in the middle which failed NY State Inspection, so no choice, had to put OE Kenda on the Spyder.

By simply replacing the short factory piece with a 4-inch length of the same tubing used by Can-Am it solves the problem. I don't understand why Can-Am doesn't do the same thing I did. BTW, I used long 45-degree needle nose pliers to remove the factory piece, with the new piece I installed, no tools are needed to remove it and it's very easy to re-install it. Yes and it is best to use the oil that is in the kit i mentioned. I really do not recommend using anything else. The reason....... It is specifically made for CanAm. To my understanding it is a 70\30 blend where other full synthetics are like a 40\60. Meaning the first number is synthetic and the second is traditional oil. It is truly worth the extra dollars. If it is the very first oil change that may be why. What i recommend if you feel that it was a lot is change it again at either 500 or a 1000 miles from now. But i do recommend have a dealer do it and let them know about having a lot before. For me i would rather spend the extra money on an oil change then several thousands on a repair. But again sometimes the very first oil change may have more shavings. That is why they recommend a change so quickly the first time.

I forgot to say earlier, thank you for the comment and support! No one will probably ever take care of your ride better than you, so you are right on point in saying that you probably will do a better job. And it is better to do it than not wait if you are rididng it a lot. This is just an opinion....... I would say since it is your fist ever oil change, the shavings you saw are from the break in of your Spyder. The next oil change should look better and i still would change it a little sooner just to help ease any worries. It is best to take a picture so you can always compare and see if it is worse or better. If you didnt, i would change the HCM Filter next time too, since you said it was a lot. There is most likely some in it as well. I strongly recommend, and say this to everyone, it is best to buy the BRP oil. It really is about the best you can get for it and worth the few extra dollars. It is probably a good idea that you didnt get it done at the dealership too. If they only have one mechanic, that poor guy is probably underpaid and overworked!!!!!

Good question and no i did not. That is an important service and i do recommend that you take it to a dealer. Not doing so could void the warranty. Also when you do it is important to have the service person sign your manual as well to document it has been done. There should be a place for them to sign it and it may be different for each year. For the annual or recommended main services i do take it to a dealer as i still have it under warranty and dont want them to have an excuse if something goes wrong.

Sorry, but as of right now i do not. My Spyder is still under a warranty so some things have to be done by dealer for now and that is one of them. After warranty is up i will be doing several videos that i could not before. I dont know of any other channel that has a video on that or i would send you a link.

hey do you know where the vin number is on the bike?

Most models it is on the swing arm ( bars going towards the back tire and around passenger foot peg) and also at the lower frame towards the front of the bike on the right side. It will be a black sticker. It is best to look in your owners manual to find locations of # as some years may be a little different. The placement i mentioned should be for 2018 and newer including 2022. Best spot is by the footpeg of passenger to see

I thought maybe I wanted one of these but if an oil and filter change is this involved NO WAY..what about coolant changes, sensors, valve adjustments..wow... And why did they put the brake reservoir right in the way?

They have cramed a lot in little spaces so it does take an effort to change things. Good part is that you dont have to do it a lot. The oil change is not to difficult it just looks that way, for an RT you have to remove a lot of plastic though.

Thank you for watching and comment. Your manual will have the proper recommendation but for me i change my Spyder's oil every 3000 miles. I would rather have it very clean rather than very dirty. Hope this helps.

Congrats on the bike and what model did you get? Just so you know, for warranty issues it is best to have the dealer do the first oil change/inspection at 3000 miles. My salesperson pulled me to the side when I picked it up and said to make sure the dealer mechanic signs the manual when they do it or it voids the warranty. On page 115 of the 2021 manual is where they need to sign it. They probably won't say anything to you if you don't force them to sign. If it wasn't for the salesperson I wouldn't have done it or known about it.

@@MOABMAN Just picked it up today at Berts Mega mall. 21 Base F3, zero miles for the same price as Imotorsports. No ADM! I was shocked. Ok thanks for the tip. I will remember that. Was a heck of a long drive home, especially on the freeway with pretty much zero experience ;)

@@RFspyder007 Hey congrats on the bike!!!!!! The salesman, Lucas, at Bert's Mega Mall treated me really good when I bought mine. He was really nice even though we fought back and forth on price. I had to do the same thing you did to bring it home, and it was at night! It had been about 10 years since I rode a motorcycle so it was a nerve racking ride home as well! When you buy it brand new, there will be oils that make a smell and plastic smell too, don't worry it will go away in about 2 - 3 weeks. Glad to hear you got it home safe first time riding.

I cant even locate the plug you are pointing at.

  • @MOABMAN

Not sure exactly which plug you are referring to but the best way to find them is they will be directly under the Big word ROTAX that is on the engine that you can see when looking at the side of the bike. Just go undeneath and they are in the middle, roughly a foot apart from each other. You will have to look through your SKID plate and on some models even remove the plate first. Hope this helped.
