Shifting a Can Am Spyder // Using the Paddle Shifter and Reverse on the Can-AM Spyder

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Shifting on a Can-Am Spyder is very easy. It has a Semi-Automatic transmission and uses a Paddle Shifter to change gears. The main problem I had when I first drove the Spyder was putting it in Reverse.
This video shows the basics of using reverse, shifting gears, and the "kill switch" or engine stop switch for a Can-Am Spyder F3 that has the Semi-automatic transmission and paddle shifter. Hopefully this series will answer any basic questions you have on riding or driving the Spyder F3 and also is the same shifting process for the Spyder RT models as well.
This is the first video in a series I will have showing you the controls, special features, and how to ride a Spyder F3, called "Learn to Ride".

    @@metallicablackend484 Thank you for the comment and support and all the way from Sweden is awesome!!!!!!!!! The Spyders are semi-automatic unless you order it in a manual. The Rykers are the only ones that are fully automatic. You do press the "+" to shift up. You do not have to shift down unless you want to and then you simply press the "-". It is veryy easy yo get use to and would not worry if you have a concern for shifting, it is extremely easy to use and is not difficult at all.

    What are your feeling about the Ryker? As a local rider, quick grab and go.. for someone who already has an F3.

  • @MOABMAN

    @MOABMAN

    3 жыл бұрын

    The Rykers are good for short trips and playing around. They are cheaper and feel a little different than the Spyder. I personally take the Spyder everywhere. My choice is Spyder over Ryker even for short trips. I may eventually get one (the Rally) just so I can do dirt road and a light off-roading in it and not feel bad if I ding it up. Supposedly that was one of the benefits of the Rally but I personally have not had the chance to ride it that way so cant speak to that. I like the looks of some of them and like the cost point as well. But if your question was more along the lines of, if I had a choice of one over the other and that was the only one I was going to own, then with no hesitation would pick the Spyder line. Way better of a ride, quality, comfort, power, and fun over the Ryker.

    I have one question when you're sifting up is up in Eco mode or maybe the regular mode when you shift do you have to let go of the throttle like you would if you were shifting with your foot do you understand what I'm saying In other words do you have to let go of the gas shift the gear and then give it more gas Like you would shift with your foot

  • @MOABMAN

    @MOABMAN

    3 жыл бұрын

    I do understand what your saying and use to ride two wheel so know what you mean. Good question too. The semi-automatic spyder allows you to stay on the throttle while shifting at any speed. It is the same for any mode your in- ECO, Normal, or Sport. You can order a manual on them, but I have to be honest... The more I use the paddle shifter the more I like it. The brake will probably be the awkward thing for you to get use to. It is on your right foot and controls all wheels simultaneously, and it stops the bike quickly.

    Thanks and good question so i hope i can answer in a way that helps you. It has good power. 1330cc engine 115hp. At 65 or 70 you just down shift a gear or two (do not be in Eco mode) and your easily doing 90 before you know it. My commute to work is 130 miles, on the way to work it is up hill. Most of the time if your not doing 80 or 90 you will get run over and i promise to you that the speed i just said is not an exaggeration you really have to stay at 80 or 90. Unbelievably there is not a lot of vibration or wobble either at that speed. The winds in this area are known to overturn tractor trailers and on the Spyder F3 it doesnt seem to care. My helmet is blown more than the bike is. As long as you have it in the right gear on the F3 the passing is not an issue, promise. The bike tops out around 120 but still feels like there is more to go. My wife and i very comfortably rode up a steep hill (about 3 miles)on the interstate and we did 65 to 70 very easily with 2 people. I am referencing the 2018 up Spyder F3's. If you get a 900+- cc engine (years 2016 and older RS models) you may be really dissapointed. I wouldnt recommend a ryker for those speeds and that type of interstate driving. Just so you know i am originally from the East coast so i have ridden the Jersey turnpike and in Atlanta traffic too, so i know where you are coming from with rhat question. Hope this helped. • @MOABMAN

    @MOABMAN

    2 жыл бұрын

    The difference between the Ryker and F3 is mainly comfort, quality, power and two up riding. If you want to ride long trips and have a passenger sometimes - Spyder wins on that. If you are looking to save some money, Ryker Wins. Ryker is more nimble and quicker on take off, but Spyder is more powerful and faster in the end. There are good and bad points to each, it all comes down to personal preference. Which ever route you take you will be happy with. Think about your needs when deciding.

I have personally done this by accident several times, and same results every time. Good question! 2. Leaving the + pressed will not shift and I do not recommend doing this and getting in that habit. The computer system for the Spyder is very good. If it sees that the button remains pressed and your giving it gas and what not, it will trigger an error code or send it into limp mode. You then have to go to dealer to reset ECU and codes. For me I just tap the button and then remove thumb. Thanks and hope this helped. Not a silly question at all and thanks for the comment. First, dont be nervous about the class and what you think that you dont know. That is what they are there for and ask all you can. You will learn a lot and be confident to ride when done. You will "roll" off the throttle on certain curves and use brakes on others. The more you ride the more comfortable you will get at this. You need to judge before going into a curve and start making the adjustment. Sometimes you will only need to let off the throttle and steer into the curve. For sharp turns or curves, yes you need to brake a little before going into it. You dont want to slam on brakes in the middle of turning or curves. Coming out of a curve you then start giving gas again. They will talk about this in better detail in the class so dont worry!! Thanks for comment and support

Plus we were limited on what we could take as well. If the main reason of owning it will be for long trips I would say the RT is the best for you. If you are by yourself riding and just want day trips for a couple hours then the F3 would work for you. Both are a comfortable ride either way. I plan in about a month to have 2 videos coming out talking about the Ryker on one and RT on the other and comparing them to the Spyder F3. I'm working a lot on it now.

I understand the storage compacity maybe a little annoying, but for those type of trips I would probably just drive my car instead. Does not having the windshield on f3 bother you? That's another concern I have. Will stuff be flying in my face without the windshield?

    Forgot to say thank you for the comment and support earlier, so thank you!!!! I love the wind and hate windshields. I am impressed with the RT windshield but absolutely hate the F3 and especially the Ryker ones. The one on the Ryker from BRP distorted the road a whole lot where it curves. I find myself fighting, leaning or looking "around" the windshield to see a non distorted drive rather than enjoying a ride but that is just me. I only buy top end helmets where noise and wind is minimal and bugs do happen to hit it, that is part of riding. I grew up with dirt bikes, jet skis, 4 and 3 wheelers and open face helmets as well so kinda used to the wind. Here in California it gets 100 degrees so wind is good on the helmet and the windshield makes a helmet hotter because no wind getting to the vents. They are convenient to have in rain and cold weather though. It sounds like the F3 will be a good fit for your needs. Check out my can-am experience video (not the newest one but the one put out about a month or 2 ago) and see about signing up for a test ride. That will give you a good chance to really see the difference.

  • @MOABMAN

    Good question! No it does not override the nanny at all. The bike still maintains the nanny features. The Pedal Commander strictly just involves how quickly the bike responds to you twisting the throttle. I believe there are only 2 years that you can override the nanny on the f3s by pushing a sequence of buttons on the left handle controls. ( I think 2016 and 2017 ). Are you wanting the nanny off?

    This is great for us future newbies to riding. Question? when upshifting gears, to you keep throttling up at the shift or do you just lay off the throttle when shifting? For someone like me who will be new to riding, I think the eco mode could be of great help when it comes to changing gears until we get the feel of the bike and changing gears becomes second nature.

  • @MOABMAN

    @MOABMAN

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello Stevie, thanks for the comment and support! You do not have to let off the throttle and it is better if you don't. You maintain the throttle speed when shifting and can even be increasing speed when doing so. The shifting for the Spyder is awesome and doesn't take long to get the hang of. Using the eco mode will help in showing you the best time to shift for good gas mileage, but is not good for going fast or passing a vehicle. Any shifting between 4000 to 6500 RPM is good to get use to when not in ECO. Try not to train yourself if your new to riding a motorcycle on a bad habit of looking down to rely on shifting. Use ECO as a reference first, but train yourself to feel the bike. This way you take your eyes off the road less. A split second can change your life if your not careful. Welcome to the Spyder family, you will love it! Stay safe and ride happy.

    @@MOABMAN Thank you for that advice! That's my worry is looking down because in a car you can get away with that but on a bike, that could be trouble, especially on the highway as that could spell trouble. It sounds like when it comes to changing gears (for a new rider) it's all about confidence and feel and that's the part you have to get used to and once that is set you're good to go. I am really looking forward to getting the Can-Am Spyder and being in the open air as I mention, for me the biggest worry is gear changing as I have never ridden a motorcyle of any sorts but your video is the best one I saw in terms of teaching gear changing on the Can Am and it's helpful but as with everything it's just getting reps on your own to build the confidence. Thank you for watching and your gonna love the Spyder. Just like in a car, it helps to down shift when passing depending on situation. Going to a lower gear will give you higher rpms than the gear you are in and this will improve speed a lot. For example if you are in 5th gear and your RPM is at 2 and your trying to pass quickly it will take you longer than if you shift into fourth gear where your RPMs might be sitting at 4-5 and your engine will be quicker in response. The higher the RPMs the more torque and hp you will have available to use. You never want to shift to a higher gear and lower RPM when passing. Hope this video will help you some!

  • @MOABMAN

    @MOABMAN

    Thank you for watching and glad this video helped. Think of the passing part just like a car does. When you step on the gas real hard to pass a car, if your in an automatic it will shift down and then you RPM's will go higher and you can go faster. So lets go to shifting the Spyder...... If you are in 6 gear and your RPMs are around 2000, when you twist the throttle a lot to pass a car, it will take a while before your power and RPMs get to a fast speed. So if you are in 6 gear and 2000 rpms and want to pass, then it is best to shift to 5th or 4th gear (down). Your RPMs will increase and you will have more power for passing quicker. Almost all vehicles accelerate faster at higher rpms. Hope this makes sense and helps. If not, just comment back and i will be glad to help, emailing is ok as well if you feel uncomfortable commenting something. moab.man@yahoo.com I hope this is what you were asking about as well.

If you let off the throttle it will make a louder than usual "clunk" noise and jerk you a little bit, that has been my experience on different models as well.

    I thought the same way at first, and I do love manual shifting as well (my jeep is manual), but the more I use the paddle shifter the more I am starting to get swayed. It still allows you to be some part of the shifting and in control. You can get it in manual shifting on the Spyders through 2021, I am not sure but should be able to on the 2022 as well. Do try the paddle shifter before buying one with manual. I am happy now that I got the semi-automatic instead of manual and would do the the same for my next one as well. Never thought I would be saying that! The best advice I can give you is clear your thoughts of motorcycle comparison from the 2 wheel riding and think of it more as an advancement in technology and engineering for a motorcycle when you ride one. The RT is such an improvement to me from the old trikes and the "Goldwing" style motorcycles of today if you go that route.
