BUYING MY FIRST KAYAK | Dagger Katana 9.7 | Explore With Lucy

SO excited to share that I bought my first ever kayak! In this video I'm taking you with me, as I pick up my new Dagger Katana 9.7 and take it for its first few trips on the River Avon in Stratford-upon-Avon - Explore With Lucy
I decided that this summer would be the summer I would buy a kayak. I had some huge travel plans for the summer of 2020, but obviously, COVID-19 crushed my dreams. Since I probably won't be going anywhere for a while, so I turned my attention to what I could do on my doorstep. There is a river about 5 minutes drive from my house, and I thought getting the kayak would be a great way to be out in nature and improve my fitness.

I gotta ask, so please don’t take offense to it. Do you know how to roll that kayak? If you are going to paddle with the skirt on....definitely learn how to roll. Most importantly...always make sure your skirt pull strap is out and not folded under the elastic band that holds your skirt on. I know you stated you have paddle for several years, but paddling with a skirt on is a whole other beast. With a recreational kayak...if you flip...you fall out. No worries....but with a skirt on....you aren’t coming out until you pull your release strap. It is also important to wear a helmet if you are going to be using a skirt. Just friendly advice from someone that has paddled for 30+ years. Enjoy your new kayak ma’am.

100% hips. Its a flick that anyone can learn with good instruction over a few hours. Mastering takes awhile however.

Great video, thanks! Well just to let you know that I have recently purchased a second hand sit on top Tootega kinetic kayak plus all the gear to keep me safe and warm. Of course I've broken the bank in the process. Main reasons for choosing the sit on top are: my age (68) , it is easier to get on and off, is more stable, I can have a seat with a higher backrest and it's easier for a beginner to paddle. A beginner, at 68?! Yes! Well, I did some canoeing as a youngster and a year ago my daughter-in-law invited my wife and I to join her at a nearby river to try out her new inflatable kayak. My goodness, paddling peacefully along the river was heavenly, and so from that day I decided that I just had to get a kayak, although for me it would have to be a rigid one. Watching your video has been a lovely experience, great footage! You've made an older man happy 😊 Thank you.

Sort of reminds me of when I bought my kayak. As a child I had kayaked on multiple occasions and at some point I randomly remembered I really liked it. So I found a kayak (actually a canoe) club nearby and signed up for an introduction course. After that I borrowed a club kayak several times and I figured I'd go to the local kayak shop to get a better idea than what I could see online. So I arrived there going "Hey, I'm looking for a kayak, I want to go the distance, possibly multi-day camping, and I think I'll need kayak A or B." So they looked at me and went "Yeah, with your length and size, probably need one of those". So we dragged both models out on the carpet, sat in, checked sizes, and eventually took them both to the water. I must have spend like 4 hours on the water there, but when I came back I was like "this one please". Funny thing is, I came by bike. I din't have a trailer, heck I don't even own a car (advantage of living in a country with good infrastructure). Plus I told no one, not even myself, that I was going to buy a kayak. So after paying I had to go "Erh, hey, imma make a quick phone call....". Luckily my club mates had my back and within 15 minutes there was a van with kayak roof top loader thingies and we brought the kayak to the club! :D And that's how I bought a brand new 17' 7" (535 cm) P&H Scorpio Mk.2 sea kayak (and some gear)

I used to work for Peugeot. I wasn't a fan of the cars but as a fan of efficiency I did appreciate that 107. Good choice. I'm in the same sort of situation, saying, "Why aren't I travelling by river? I don't need to be carrying all this stuff - it can carry me!" But as a hiker surely the natural choice would be an inflatable boat. This may mean either bringing an extra bag (filling up space in the boat) or else sacrificing your sleeping bag, but you can sleep in the boat...

Hi, love the kayaking vids. Been inflatable kayaking myself all last year and took the plunge to buy a solid plastic one this year. The video quality and the colours on your video are lovely, what camera did you record this footage on? Hoping to get the yak back out soon after March! :D

Once you start looking at the rivers you realise that all the towns are built around them, and thus you can travel to all of them faster than rush hour traffic, completely bypassing hundreds and hundreds of barely moving cars. ;) And anyone can go swimming, but only some really cool person would be casually gliding by in a small boat, under a sign with a picture of them and a red line going through it.

I’m considering the Dagger Katana or the Dagger Axis... I’m curious how you chose the Katana? BTW.. I did read your blog and I’m also considering the Pyranha Fusion II. I struggle with the choice between the more recreationally focused Axis and the whitewater focused Katana.

Hi Dal, Honestly it came down to what I thought I would get the most use out of (I also considered the Axis). I live at least two or three hours from the sea and about the same from the lakes, so I knew a trip to either wouldn't be common and proper rec kayak wasn't essential. I enjoy a bit of whitewater alongside touring trips so I went for a kayak that is very manoeuvrable but is still comfortable for paddling long distances. For me it just came down to where I want to paddle the most. Hope this helps 😃

Wrong. the makers advice is to never do that. upside down or J bars is the way to go and avoid damage/deformation of the hull.

This is will be my first kayak to buy after alot of reading reviews on crossover kayaks.. I'd love to know how you have found it? Have you have any issue with the skeg releasing ? Storage, ease of padding, tracking.. positives and negatives? Cheers and enjoy 😉

That's so exciting! I love my Katana. It's fantastic for flat water paddling. My only critique is if you want to go long distances it's a going to be a bit slower than a touring boat, but it does have the best of both worlds in terms of shape. And no issues with the skeg for me
