Paddling the Dan River on my first whitewater kayaking experience in the Dagger Katana

I finally got the chance to paddle with River King Pete and the rest of the crew on my first whitewater experience. Pete showed me a few sections of the Dan River including the BEAUTIFUL Kibler Valley. I learned very quickly that paddling a whitewater boat is a whole new ball game. I managed to only swim once but I’m definitely hooked on whitewater paddling. It’s been what I’ve been missing out of my outdoor experience…can't get enough!
I also want to extend a BIG thank you to Pete for the invitation to come paddling and for all of the instruction and patience he gave along the way. This was my first official "KZreadr" meet up and it couldn't have been more fun. Thanks Pete!

    That looks like it was a blast! Nice camera setup. I did the same thing the first time I ditched it in my kayak - forgot to lean towards the rock. The water filled the kayak in a second and it got pinned between the rock and current. It was a challenge getting it out. Also I need to get me a helmet! I usually stay in calmer waters since I’m alone.

    I really enjoyed this video, Austin! Pete and the guys are awesome. I'd be curious to know why you chose the Katana for a kayak. I found this video as part of my research as I move from a ducky up to whitewater. I really like the Katana since I enjoy multi-day trips, but my whitewater friends are trying to talk me into the Code or Mamba. Your thoughts would be welcome.

  • @SideTrailAdventures

    @SideTrailAdventures

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'll start by saying that I'm no expert but the reason I started with the Katana was for the versatility of taking it on multi-day whitewater trips. I told myself if I'm only going to get one whitewater boat, the Katana checks all my blocks. That being said, after paddling the Katana I understand that if you want more out of a whitewater experience, the Katana is not your boat. Because of that, I got a LL Flying Squirrel 95. It's a true whitewater boat but it doesn't have the versatility of the Katana. I might sell the Squirrel as I progress in whitewater, but I'll never sell the Katana. The Code and Mamba are great boats that are way more maneuverable than the Katana but can't hang on long trips and definitely can't compete on flat water with the Katana's skeg. At the end of the day, it just comes down to what you want to do on the water. Hope this helps and good luck in your search!

    @@SideTrailAdventures you and I are thinking exactly the same! I don't plan to do bigger than class III water, which the Katana can more than handle. No plans to go creeking in skinny, rocky water either. So the Katana checks a lot of boxes for me when 90% of my trips are moving rivers with class I-II+ water.

    Great video! I just purchased a Katana after searching for one for a long time. I was going to go with a Werner paddle as well. Which paddle did you decide on (is that a Rio?) and what length paddle did you pick up to use with the Katana? Would you pick a different length after using it?

  • @SideTrailAdventures

    @SideTrailAdventures

    Awesome, congrats on snagging a Katana! They're the best crossover boat in my opinion followed closely by the Karma Traverse. I got the Werner Rio but if I did it all over again, I'd get the Desperado as my starter paddle. Nothing screams "rookie" like bright yellow paddle blades😂 The Desperado is a slightly better paddle and fits in a little better on the river. As far as length, there are different opinions. For reference, I'm 6'2" and have a 200cm. I found the Werner page helpful wernerpaddles.com/pages/fit-guide. Thanks for watching!

    Hey what a great video and I recently found Pete and the River King videos and want to get into it. I’m more along with your thinking as far as doing over night trips. So question 1. How much gear can you put in your kayak ( I guess how many overnight trips with the gear you can carry can you go on. Question 2. I’m 5’8” and 180 lbs. do you think the 9’7” would be better for me or with my size I would I could pick either size and do just fine? Thanks for any information and keep the videos a coming.

    I'd say if you know you're going to be using it for camping, the 10.4 would be the better option so you've got extra capacity. As far as gear goes, you can fit a surprising amount in there, but it has to be packed with purpose. I've paddled a Native Ultimate and I could pack that thing like a pickup truck. The Katana and others like it can hold a lot if you pack smart. I was a backpacker first so most of my gear is already small and light so it translates well. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching!

    @@SideTrailAdventures hey thanks for the reply and yes it helped a lot. I’m stuck somewhere between “I want to camp as I kayak for 2 to 3 days “ to “ I want to go out for the day and have fun in a little bit of moving water “. Most of the rivers around me are going to be class 1and 2 with a few 3 but on a river close to me they are building a huge white water park that will go up to a class 4. I called a kayak shop close by and told them what I told you and he was leaning towards the Dagger Axis 10’ 5. Over the Katana. I think just the fact I would be doing 80% class 1&2. Have you tested the Axis or no someone that has and your opinion on it. Thank you for any information and thanks for the above reply.

    @@LIVE4THEADVENTURE I haven't paddled the Axis personally but know those that do. It's very comfortable in Class I-II. The Katana can handle more serious whitewater so if that's not something you're interested in, the Axis may be a better option.

    Wow! What a great adventure and video! The katana seems like a perfect all rounder and I'm thinking about buying one. I have a question, and would be super glad if you could answer: Im 6'4" with rather long legs. Do you think I'd be able to fit in a 10.4 katana?

    Before whitewater, I paddled a touring kayak (WS Tempest 170) and a fishing kayak (Native Ultimate FX15). I wouldn't try either on the Dan though. The short answer to your question is, absolutely. I'm a camper first and wanted a whitewater kayak that I could pack overnight gear in. As a kayak, the Katana is more forgiving for a newbie like me but if I wasn't concerned about cargo capacity, I would've gone with a shorter boat like most everyone else had. Thanks for watching!
