Buyers Guide to the Ruger American Rimfire: A review!

Ойын-сауық

After owning this gun for 7 months i thought it would be good to review the fit and finish, performance and general pro's and con's. The idea is to provide a point of view from an owner to someone who is considering this rifle.
I hope you enjoy.

Well I got mine sighted in and no issues that you speak of. Love my gun no jams and have killed 3 squirrels on this years hunt. I changed out the trigger spring to a 2# pull and the gun works great. Shoots the best with the 40 grain 1200 fps AR CCI round with 5 round Nickle group at 50 yards. Going back out tomorrow to do some more small game hunting. Hope you got your gun figured out by now. I do wish I would have upgraded to the wood stock which I prefer like you. Still a great gun for the money.

Well, you get what you pay for with rimfire guns. I have several CZ rimfires, a few CZ527`s, they have there issues too. I recently bought my last CZ527, and when you run the bolt, it sounds like a hacksaw cutting a metal tube. I`ve since fixed it because i didnt want to ship the gun back to them and have them possibly switch the gun out for a different one. I didnt want to lose the pretty wood i paid dearly for. I have a Ruger American 22LR, Ruger 1022, both run flawless. Out of probably 100 ruger rotary mags i`ve had over the last several decades, i might have had 2 that would jam. The fix is to polish the hell out of the feed ramp in the front leading edge of the mag, problem solved. You may need to just touch it up with a dremel tool grinder and grind a little better profile into the ramp inside the mag, THEN, do a final polish to it. Keep in mind about the milling marks in the ruger`s, as they are mass produced. You`re gonna have shiddy quality with walmart type rimfire guns. When ruger machine`s their products, they will keep running the machine tooling even when the tools are chipped out and shot. Thats why you see such bad tooling marks with cheap guns. Its all about saving company money. There`s a good reason why you pay more for a CZ rifle. The fit an finish are far better quality controlled. But even CZ has a few bad ones make it out the door. Its production, it happens. Not every gun is picked up and checked over 100%. They run a few batches, then pull a couple of the line and look them over, then ship it out. Unless you are paying thousands for a custom rifle, quality issues will always be an issue. If i were you, fix what you got and move on. Its not a $2000 custom rifle. That ruger rimfire will still be around long after you are gone. Your grandkids will still be shooting it.

It will shoot under an inch at 50 yards, about what can be expected from a 22lr in this price range. If you're looking for an accurate rifle check out the RPR or build a KIDD 10-22... I'm definitely interested in building a custom 10-22.

The bad point to my rife is that the center line of the magazine does not line up with the center line of the chamber so consequently the ammunition gets hung-up when the nose of the bullets hit the left side of the chamber. Ruger refuses to fix it. Garbage company!

If it's anything like the American Centerfire there is a matching serial number in the grove on the bolt. I found that the serial number was where a majority of the roughness was. By sanding the edges off the numbers my bolt was smooth as glass.

I just bought one and I pick it up on the 9th. I will let you know what I think after shooting it. I used my buddy's last February and it is a tack driver. Used it to shoot squirrels in a contest to see who could shoot there limit for the most weight of squirrels. I ended up with 4 and missed my last one which if I would have got it I probably would have won. I made my longest ever squirrel kill at around 80 yards and couldn't believe it. Laughed my butt off. Great video and sorry to hear the luck with yours. Do some fine tuning on it and see if that helps with your problems.

They might have done some quality control since this video. I bought a ruger American .22lr about 3 months ago and it is smooth as could be, no complaints on my end, no issues loading the magazine either. I wish you would’ve gotten one without these issues, because I bet you’d love it.

I have the same gun. I love it now but it had issues at first. Did you send the gun back? I did. It needed a new stock because they took to much wood out during the manufacturing process. Also, it needed a new bolt. Mine all the same issues as yours. Ruger replaced and hand fitted everything. Now it's smoother than my CZ455 Custom. (My magazines pop in and out smooth as silk!)

Enjoyed the video. Excellent review! I've gotta say though, it's unfortunate that you have had a few problems with your rifle. I haven't had any of these issues with my Ruger American Rimfire. It might be because I paid a little bit extra and got the walnut stock stainless steel Talo edition, but the bolt on mine is butter smooth and the magazine goes in perfectly and there are no hang ups whatsoever. Everything is finished beautifully on it. Like you, I also want a wood stock and I was deliberating between a few different 22s and it really ended up coming down to the American or a Browning T-Bolt. I took a chance and got the American and I don't regret it one bit. It looks, feels, and shoots like a premium rifle. The only things that I don't like about it are that the bolt doesn't lock closed, which you had not mentioned in the video.

my RAR 22LR suffers from extraction failures 2-3 per mag of 10. Ruger has already serviced the rifle once, adjusting the chamber, extractor and spring that lives opposite the extractor. it made no difference. the rifle will go back to Ruger and I will get a replacement. I try to like Ruger but everything I've purchased from them since ~2013 has required at least 1 trip back to them for service. I am kicking myself for selling the Savage Mark II. It was a fine 22LR bolt gun. Never malf'ed on me and shot very well.

It's the magazine that's causing your feeding issue .. Or rather, its how the magazine sits loose up against the front lughole and it sits loose because the hole is too deep and you can test this out by pushing the magazine up into the stock with your fingers when you cycle the bolt. You will find the bullets now cycle perfectly. So now your problem is, the magazine is slumped down and so the bullet doesn't line up with the barrel when you're cycling the bolt. I fixed it by making a little O ring that fits behind the bolt in the magazine thereby making the magazine slightly longer. It fits very snuggly and the bullets cycle perfectly now. But now it's difficult to get the magazine in and out of the stock. So.. not an ideal solution. Perhaps the hole could get filled up with resin/epoxy of some sort as an alternative fix. it really doesn't need much, like a millimeter at the most. But it doesn't say much positive for the fit and finish of the American rimfire. Like you. I noticed the finish on the bolt is extremely rough, milling marks and burrs all over the place. My Swedish Mauser from 1899 is immaculate by comparison. Funny how something made over 100 years ago is so much better made and they didn't have any of the technology available today. All that being said. I think the bore is very nice and the gun shoots accurate, so it's not all negative.

I have brand new a Ruger 10/22 and a Ruger American in 30-06 and agree the details are terrible. I’ve been polishing the action and will upgrade a few parts to make them more functional. These guns are essentially a foundation to start from. For many that’s good enough but if you want something more refined you have to work it over yourself or spend big bucks out the gate for something else. I like tinkering and, next time I get out the 10/22 I will be drilling a hole in the back of the receiver for a cleaning rod to pass through. Even with their flaws, I will be getting a Ruger Bolt action rim fire but can’t decide on barrel length. Target or Long Range? Maybe wood stock for this one? Too much fun!

Odd, the 10 rd. rotary mags are generally simple and reliable. They load in my 10/22 easily and feed the firearm reliably as opposed to the 25 rd. mags which occasionally jam. As for the Ruger American Rimfire, I just got one and have yet to take it to the range but hopefully the QC has improved. If nothing else, a bolt action gun should at LEAST feed reliably and that yours doesn't is a huge problem. Not sure if you got a bad mag or a flawed rifle. This video is a couple years old as I type this so hopefully you found some solutions to the quality issues.

@@aboutwhat1930 Yeah, all my 10 rd. rotary mags are the black ones (I have 11 of them) and they all feed fine except for a couple than I can only get 9 rds in. Not sure if I got some debris in there and I've never tried taking one apart though I have tried tightening the screw at the front of it. I'll have to look up how to take one apart without parts flying out of it. Also. in response to the OP, I have taken my American Rimfire rifle to the range a couple times now and it works great. Added a Burris Droptine Rimfire 3-9x40 scope. Got it pretty well dialed in at 50 yds.

I am sorry you are having a feeding problems with your Ruger. I like you, value quality because I keep all of my firearms and I shoot them all. I had the opposite problems. I bought a CZ rifle and it was a nail driver, however it would not eject the empty shell. This was such a hassle; I brought it to some of the guys at my club who also do some gunsmithing and they looked at it and they recommended to sent it back. I did and opted for the Ruger. The Ruger bolts runs smooth and the shells fly out with authority. It is not as accurate as the CZ but it operates flawlessly. I hope that you get this resolved. Good luck

It is very unfortunate that our economy dictates quality in American produced items. I'm not just talking about Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Colt and a host of another rifle manufactures are forced to lower the bar on quality fit and the finished products they produce. CNC Machining, and assembled with assembly gages by mainly young inexperienced people with a Rush job policy of "Learn to work fast or get fired for being too slow" hanging over their heads meanwhile just focusing on the goal of keeping a roof over their heads plus their families. -Dave
