THIS STORY:
There is a tiny old town way out in the vast expanses of Central Illinois, named Bellflower. Established in 1871, it is the home of 360 people. It was in the late 1800's that Bellflower residents James and Marena Abel were laid down to rest into their graves. They had been always terrified of being buried alive, so a special accommodation was made for each of them: COFFIN ESCAPE HATCHES. It was a way to flee from the inside of their coffins, should they wake.
Come along with me...because we found it.

_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

I would never want to be buried in the ground; what if you were alive when they buried you. Also just the thought of being put in the ground is creepy. Worms insects & whoever else. Reminds me of that movie, the premature burial. In the oven you go up in flames 🔥 right away. Probably goes so fast you wouldn't feel it. Hopefully you get embalmed before going in oven.

I'm barely 6'4" and standing beside Washington's full uniform I feel like a huge blob at 215 lbs. I'd estimate his waist was 28" and his shoulders were not very wide, we're talking bean pole.! But I think George could've squeezed out through that oval opening.

Thank you and I just love it! When I taught Indiana history many many years ago we would always do a unit on cemeteries and graveyards so the kids could understand more when they went to visit. We found one story in Indiana that a wealthy man died? And was placed in a mausoleum. He was so afraid of being buried alive that in his Mausoleum he installed a telephone and had a small table a rocking chair a bottle of brandy or scotch and a cigar. So if he was buried alive he could get out of his casket call up the people and sit and enjoy a drink and a smoke rocking until they came and got him. My students loved it and a few of them even brought up the idea that they were going to be buried with cell phone so they could call somebody and then still play games. I believe about 30 or 40 years ago they finally disconnected the telephone at the mausoleum. Again, thank you I love when you take us along on your Journeys!

Whenever you see the little tiny stones a distance from the big headstone it is the foot stone. It usually has the initials of the person buried there. They don’t use them any more but they were popular way back especially in the south to mark the full grave and the orientation of the coffin

FYI the unmarked stone, or sometimes just a big rock, in older cemeteries are often the grave of a slave. They will mostly be positioned at the bottom of family plots. Sometimes you will find them buried beside family. This signified the family considered them family.

Learn something new eachday..so intriguing. I found this in a write up about slave grave markers. ( “Some of them are in the shape of a human eye, kind of like an oval with points on the end.” According to local African-American families, growing up they were told that the purpose of this rock shape was to symbolize that the eyes of the dead watch over the living.)

Hi! I just subbed to this channel and from his suggestion I subbed your channel, too! I love going to Cemeteries and Graveyards, just for the sake of learning about people and history. If you don't know yet, there is a difference between the both, Cemeteries are stand alone while Graveyards are on a Church property....usually. When I talk about my passion for this to people, some get excited and engaged with me talking about it, while some look at me as if they are seeing an image of Wednesday of the Adams family standing in front of them! LOL Never imagined to search for people like me here in KZread. It was just a fluke that Faces of the Forgotten channel came up in my suggested videos. Another terrifying thought - imagine reviving while you're being cremated, you're inside the furnace, the furnace is full blast, and you're being incinerated alive. With the furnace full blast, who is going to hear you scream? And if they managed to pull you out, you will have suffered serious life-threatening burns. People who choose to be cremated upon death need to seriously re-think their funeral plans.

For a rural cemetery, it’s fairly large. When I was in mortuary school, it was said the mirror was a way to determine death as well as placing a hot scalpel on skin to see if a blister appears or injection of ammonia under skin to see if redness would appear. Much different then today. Also undertaker would go to residence to embalm body and deceased would lie in state in their home.

I can't remember when I came across your videos on you tube (Chemo Brain is real) but, I get so excited watching them! You're always respectful for the dearly departed. My children and I have walked many a cemetery. It helped their math skills when they were growing up. They'd try to figure how old people were. For history lessons like the 1918 flu pandemic. Kids I take looking into old cemeteries now learn respect for the graves. It's amazing.

You would love my local cemetery. It was original part of the local church which was built and is documented from the 13th c. The first actual stones that can currently be found dates to 1546 and there are numerous from the 17th, 17th and 18th centuries. When I was younger I used to go up regularly and do grave rubbings.

I spent several hours reading all the tombstones in the small cemetery in Texas where most of my dads relatives were buried and found so many interesting things out about my family. I live in Texarkana which is a twin city and mobsters came here often after visiting the hot springs in Arkansas and there are two main old cemeteries in the heart of town with the most beautiful headstones and beautiful angels. I hate that the older cemeteries often are not taken care of like they should since there are no new burials in them. My moms family is also buried in small country cemeteries linked to a church on site. I believe you came through town last year. Thanks for sharing your adventures. I’m a history buff so love how you share the story.

He asked some questions and I paused it to tell him about historically being buried alive. We watched over half of it together. Thank you for another opportunity for finding ways for me to teach my grans history. Be safe on the road and blessings to you and yours.

There is one near me in England. The vicar of a village church in the 19th century was scared of being buried alive. On his death, his unsealed coffin was buried in a tabletop tomb, a flask of wine and loaf of bread left inside. Rather than stone, the end of the tombstone was an iron door. A key was left inside the tomb and the door locked from outside. He never did reappear and the keyhole was was sealed!

So happy for this recommendation on KZread. I love going through cemeteries. Did you know that a lot of the really old cemeteries have native to the area plants and trees that attract all kinds of birds and wildlife? I really enjoy driving through with my binoculars and just looking around. I've seen lots of birds and marked off sightings in my bird book driving through cemeteries. Plus I've seen my share of rare foxes. And some cemeteries have very unique and interesting graves. That make you stop get out and pay your respects. I have garden tools for my own family plots in my car but I often if need be weed out someone's lillies. Anyway I love your channel so far. MARY WORTH!!!! and Bachelors Grove are still on my bucket list but I loved your videos of them. In this video you pose the question why did Mr Black choose this spot. I bet someone knows why he chose this spot. Maybe its a half way point or maybe there was really good farm land around there. Or maybe it was a prairie heaven on earth place that was so beautiful and so peaceful that he was drawn to it and had to settle there.

So correct. At one moment I couldn't find my grandmothers grave. Confussed and determi ed no to return back home with her flowere. I begain to pray asking my granny to hepl me find her grave. The problem was afther seeing so many similar graves and head tones, I became confused. Suddently on my right side I noticed a grave stone with a beautiful the Image of the Infant baby Jesus, asked the Infant for help and has he has see my granny's gravestone? Afther in a matter of a 15 seconds bending over I sudently looked towards my left , and there straigt ahead was my granny's gravestone. So many emotions came over me. Till today now when ever I visit my grandmother I always give thanks to the Infant Jesus and pay my respects at that grave also.
