It was said that while this author, J. Dennis Robinson was researching his book, he spend a good hour studying roughly two dozen portraits that the hotel owner took on the adjacent island where Maren's sister Karen worked, a certain Karl Thaxter. Dennis did not know who the people depicted in the vintage images were, but they had may included Norwegian immigrants who worked at that hotel. He was hoping to find photographs of the 2 murder victims; Karen and Anethe, but there was no way to tell if they were depicted. It was said that Karen was not pretty and she was also shy (according to Celia Thaxter). Anethe was only at the Isles of Shoals a few months before she was killed.

THIS STORY:
On March 6, 1873, two Norwegian women, Karen and Anethe Christensen, were strangled and one struck with a hatchet. A third woman, Maren Hontvet, escaped and hid on the island at a place now called "Maren's Rock". Maren, the only witness to the murders, identified a German-born fisherman.
He would be caught...

What a great story Horrific, but you told it so well. Love the drone flying at the opening. The flower falling off the head stone at the end was freaky!. Thanks so much Ron and FOTF crew you guys are wonderful! Ordered the book too, taking on vacation with me. Thanks again. Stay safe Ron!

Yeah that was really really creepy. I did not notice this at all. Till you mentioned it. But did you also notice when the rose fell off - the leaves on the rose were actually moving after the rose fell off. Then not only that but the other dry rose fell off as well. NOW THAT WAS CREEPY.😮

I had a feeling that as soon as you laid the flower down, something was going to happen. Very tragic story, all for greed. Great Job, Ron!
Those photos you have of them looking at the camera while that music is playing, plus the drone footage is the best. A+ :)
Ron! Great production with Little Jimmy and telling of a story that is very familiar to me! My Great Grandmother grew up on New Castle and I have been up there several times in recent years to walk the same streets that she did with some of our clan! We met a wonderful historian who helped us discover more about our ancestry and lives in New Castle. She took us on a tour and told us the story of Smuttynose Island, which I have on tape! I went to the bookstore in Portsmouth and bought the same book that you were speaking of! Such a small world, is it not? Thank you for bringing this story to life! I so appreciate your work, Ron. Stay safe and God bless!

This was a horrible tragedy the Smuttynose Murders. I grew up visiting Portsmouth many summers as a kid and knew this story as I’ve taken the Ferry Boat ride out to the Isles of Shoals. Definitely a great ride to take if you have a chance to do it. Portsmouth is full of history and even though it’s a small town there’s a lot of amazing things to see. Great topic. I was stationed at Portsmouth for 3 years and the Isle of Shoals murders is still very much alive for the residents of the area. This is a horrific murder of course, but I'm glad at least Maren (and her dog) escaped. I believe Wagner was the murderer. He had the motive and the strength to wield the axe. Well done as always. Fine telling, of horror and one mans one way journey to the pit. RIP Ladies.
This had nothing to-do with the wind if you notice when Ron placed the flower he made sure that he pushed it back so it was secure I've had enough things happen to me to notice that the flower was removed with a different type of movement you actually feel a smooth presence move them. This Is a gesture made for Ron to see she's grateful for his thoughtful gift.
What a sad horrifying story, the flower falling off, that was something..a bit off a talk back at the end.. Back in time music, touched ones heart. Fantastic telling, thanks, I also prefer the stones to look old.
What you said about cleaning headstones; the first rule I taught my kids is" If it's not yours, don't touch it"

The opening of this episode is incredibly beautiful. The music selected perfectly complemented the drone footage. I rewatched the opening twice. Thank you for creating a truly awesome video!
The music is fabulous. To tell the history of these women was unreal.
The flower falling off was very strange I have watched it at least 4 times and there doesn’t seem to be a breath of wind great story and so sad no one could protect them .
Hi Ron, I was born and raised in Keene New Hampshire, and went to Hampton Beach and Portsmouth every year. I went to Star Island at the Ises of Shoals for many years. I have been to Smuttynose 3 times and read the book Moonlight Murder at Smuttynose. There is also a lot of fascinating history on Star Island as well. Betty Mooney's Cave, Miss Underhill's Chair and the Beebe Cemetery.
Ron, I watched the very end several times to look for any kind of wind or breeze... absolutely nothing! The yellow rose essentially appeared to have been knocked off the headstone ledge. I honestly don't know how to explain it or how to interpret it. We can only speculate. Perhaps it was her way of thanking you for remembering them. A gentle nod of appreciation.

In checking further Anethe's husband remarried several years later to Walborg Regina Jakobsen. I did find information on site findagrave....it stated burial details unknown for him. Interesting information shown on Maren Sebeille Christensen Hontvet findagrave site that it was rumored she confessed on her deathbed to the murders. I have got to read the book! A great mystery.
The flower falling was odd. Never happened before in your videos did it? It looked like something else fell right after the rose. It was a great ending to your story. Good job you’re a great story teller! If I believed the spirits of the dead were listening I would say they were so glad to be remembered that the rose falling was a way to say thanks!

I appreciate hearing the stories behind people who might not otherwise be remembered. I like history and I like to know the stories behind it. It helps us remember the people were real.
That was sort of eerie when the rose you placed on the one sister's grave that it was like it was pushed off her stone slab onto the ground followed by the old dead one. Wonder if means something?
Missed the live. Was on another live at the time. You were up in my neck of the woods. We have lots of good stories up here in new england. I am 2 hours from there in southern mass. This was such a sad story when i heard it.
👍💯❤️👊👊👊. Love the music and the Drone footage. It prepare us for what is to come.kind of relaxes us, so we can sit back and enjoy the video. Love that shirt Ron.👍. I like to listen and watch the video, then comment later. Watching that rose fall off, even the dead one fell off. Spirit is energy. We are all Energy That Energy live on.maybe she wanted you to remove the dead flower then put yours there, not put her beautiful new flower by the old dead one. Or maybe the one beside her got jealous said no he put mines down first. Maybe her husband said wait a minute, who are you to give my wife a rose? You don't know her therefore his jealous energy swiped it away. 😳. If you look carefully there was no wind, because both flowers would of fell off. When visiting the graves of loved ones, I always remove old dead flowers, and replace them with fresh live ones maybe you should asked the husband for permission. Maybe he felt disrespected. Or explained to them why you was leaving the flower.one of my aunts used to say she dreamed of her daughter on her birthday, mother's day. She figured it out her daughter wanted fresh flowers, to be remembered on special days. Once she started doing that the dreams stopped. She would say, those dreams was her daughter Cheryl way of saying, mom you know my birthday is coming up, or mother's day is coming up. Remember me, bring me flowers. So she did on those days You see spirits know, they want to be remembered.they want us to know we not only miss them, we still love them.we remember.everybody should be remembered. I hate to see old dead flowers left on people final resting place. Even if it's wild flowers. If I do arrangements and they are still in good shape, I will place them on someone else grave. Or if they are in bad shape. I remember to bring fresh flowers. I grow flowers, have several rose bushes. Thanks Ron, that was a first for me seeing that.. interesting too. My husband and oldest 2 son's said did you see that😳? It was not the wind or the other one would of fell off too. That let me know they do pay attention and watch till the end.🙂 Take care, be safe on the road. Love, respect and positivity always.👍✌️🌻🌹🖖🙂👋. Vee, Andrew and family.🙂.
