THIS EPISODE:
Walking to the grave of one of the priests who was there, while telling the true historical story of the famous exorcism that was given by the Jesuit Brothers of St. Louis University and Alexian Brothers in St. Louis back in 1949. Telling the story of that lesser known priest who was in a more minor role as a participant and witness.
OVERVIEW:
In the late 1940s, in the United States, priests of the Roman Catholic Church performed a series of exorcisms on an anonymous boy, documented under the pseudonym "Roland Doe" or "Robbie Mannheim". The 14-year-old boy (born circa 1935), was the alleged victim of demonic possession. Events were recorded by the attending priest, Raymond J. Bishop. Subsequent supernatural claims surrounding the events were used as elements in William Peter Blatty's novel The Exorcist in 1971, and the movie that followed.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exorcis...
TIMELINE FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE REAL STORY,
(JUST PRIOR TO THE JESUIT PRIESTS TAKING OVER):
The family lived in a small house in Mount Rainier, a Maryland suburb of Washington DC. Cottage City Maryland.
He was an only child, and he had to depend on the adults in the household for his playmates, a slight boy, weighing in at about 95 pounds, not much for sports but like board games.
The first event was on January 15, 1949
- “a dripping sound”. They seem to locate it in the sloped ceiling from the grandmother’s bedroom and there was a painting of Christ which began to shake as if someone was bumping the wall behind the painting.
When the parents returned in the evening then they all heard scratching, like claws scraping across wood within grandmother’s bedroom.
The spiritual Aunt died in St. Louis (where they had a lot of relatives) on January 26, -11 days after the first scratching sounds occurred. Interestingly, at the same time of her death, the scratching stopped.
At this time, the boy was obsessed with the Oijia board. It seemed he was trying to reach out to his dead Aunt.
But at the same time, NEW noises started that only the boy could hear in his room, the squeaking of shoes, like someone was walking around his bed.
Now the boy, the mother and the grandmother all together lay in his bed and had the experience of the mother calling out to her sister and her sister answering in pressure waves/knocks, then mattress shaking with the corners of the bed sheets “starched up”.
The scratching and continued night after night, for more than three more weeks.
At School - desk moving around. The boy compared it to the planchette of a Ouija board.
Next all sorts of things would happen in the house where ever the boy was present, like a Bible rising from a bookcase, and then land at the boys feet. Or an orange and a pair fly across the room. Kitchen table tip over. Breadboard sliding off the kitchen counter. Scattering of clothes all over the kitchen.
Then in front of relatives and family members the big heavy chair that the boys sat in slightly rose and then flipped over all by itself with him in it. Everyone was stupefied.
Then they all went to friends house 40 miles away for a rest bite, yet yeah you are witnessed him sitting in the rocking chair spinning like a top. Many many witnesses to this event.
Return to physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, psychic, and a Lutheran minister.
But still, first, the Lutheran minister went to the house and after witnessing the paranormal events, he (with a fellow priest) planned an approach to solving the problem involving something else that had nothing to do with religion:
“Hunting a poltergeist”
(If the will is weak, the devil can move in).
Pastor at home finally states: “You need to get a Catholic priest, they understand this stuff”.

I was at a prison, where they had a small museum attached to it. While viewing the museum, they had the actual electric chair for the prison on display, made of wood. It was only 2 - 3 feet away, I think 18 men had been put to death in that chair (at least). I leaned over the railing, to touch the arm of the chair... but then thought... no. Bad juju I thought to myself. I did not touch the chair. I think that was a wise decision.

Father William Bowdern is buried at Calvary cemetery in St. Louis. Been there many times. He’s buried with the other priests there. I’ve been to the house where the exorcism was on Roanoke in St. Louis. I didn’t go inside but went by there. The area of the old St Alexian brothers hospital where the exorcism was finished was torn town several years ago. Supposedly a copy of the priests notes were found in an old desk in the room where the exorcism took place. The room was closed off after the exorcism and was only opened when they were in the process of demolishing the hospital

Books would fly off the book shelf, people that stayed with us, had horrible nightmares there, my parents often argued, which was unusual for them, and I would wake in the night standing in my parents room, just staring at them. On looking back, the thought of reading The Exorcist in THAT house, was probably not a good idea....🥺🙏

She also consulted mediums. She became a believer. She told me she went and consulted mediums. Her mother had passed and she wanted to make contact. She said she saw her mom. These are what is called familiar spirits tgey like to disguised as a child and or a loved one. She began to see them all the time. So we arranged a house cleaning for her. They come in one of 2 ways. Either the board or they can follow you and piggyback style. She had a real time.

Hello Ron(I hope I got your name right)! I know this is a year late but I would like to say that I appreciate you covered the story well. I am a Catholic, these kinds of instances cause sadness and even fear amongst each other as well. I have started last year learning and reading about things like this. I will admit, it's not an easy thing to digest for many because these are often not for the faint of heart but it's a harsh reality we have to be aware of. Of course, always seek out redemption for when we sin because we then obtain a state of grace and through that only God is powerful than the devil himself. And I also hope it's okay if I add a bit haha. So for the stages of possession is actually more than three steps. For starters, they are called the stages of diabolical influence at least in one of the books I read and there are actually 6 forms: temptation, vexation(this one pertains to saints because it is when God gives very limited permission for the demons to directly harm the saints in a way to obtain a stronger divine grace I believe. It's a bit complicated to understand so I recommend extra research), oppression, possession and subjugation(pertains to making an actual deal with the devil). With infestation pertaining to animals and other material objects. Whether it be a corner in a house or a toy with a troubled history behind it from its previous owners, that would be infestation just so you aren't confused haha. That is why we are encouraged or should be blessing to any new place we move into because you never know the type of history it led. I'm not saying history is bad in fact I love history but sometimes we have to be careful. But all those forms can lead to possession of an individual, if they haven't confessed, aren't baptized, or are continuing to do something in their lives that invites that evil in. As far as the relics are concerned, it's super interesting. I think the one you mentioned was actually a third class relic which are often prayer cards or even rosaries that the laypeople have used to touch first and second class relics, thus, then they become third class. First class relics are the bones, blood, or a part of the Saint's body. Second class would be a type of clothing the Saint wore. Therefore, relics are used in excorcisms to help the priest/exorcist to cast the demons out of the possessed individual because its like burning for the demons so you could say that the boy's reaction to throwing the relic is typical reaction from someone who is definitely possessed. Basically, anything that is blessed by a priest and holy such as a rosary, scapulars, miraculous medals of the Virgin Mary(which I have it's like a chain you wear around your neck), holy water, and even exorcised salt, demons will have a negative reaction towards it because it's literal torture for them. Henceforth, for us Catholics the virgin Mary is very important because when the priest is conducting an exorcism when she appears, it's over for the Evil one, they flee. When they see her they'd rather be punished by God I'll just put it that way in simple terms haha. So if you seek out psychics mediums or other means to free someone of a possession when the boy's family sought out a seance it's only going to make it worse. Think of it as a mean of fluffing their ego which is in their nature and it'll be less than likely for them to leave the person's body without a fight. If you are interested in reading more about the forms and process of possession may I recommend the books " Slaying Dragons " by Charles D. Fraune and " The Diary of an American Excorcist " by Stephen J. Rossetti. I recommend reading one or two chapters at a time because they cover heavy stuff but they are easy to understand. If you do end up getting both books(I believe Amazon sells them)there is a prayer in the beginning of " Diary of an American Excorcist " titled A Prayer For You that is heavily encouraged to do before reading the book because it serves as a barrier or protection between yourself(as I'm looking back in my notes for the book). Honestly this recommendation also extends for any of you in the comment sections who want to give these books a read. Feel free to take your time. I did and made sticky notes. I apologize for the large post and hope it wasn't too confusing. Other than that great work!

The proper term for a male Catholic religious who is NOT an ordained priest is ‘BROTHER’ not Father. Brothers and priests are entirely different levels in the Catholic hierarchy.

My grandpa took a stroke and had massive bleeding on the brain. The doctors could not explain how my grandfather survived. They told us there is absolutely no medical explanation, especially since he had a bad heart. When he came to, he told us that Michael the Arch angel came to him and saved him. My grandfather’s name also happened to be Michael. He ended up having very minimal side effects from what happened and he ended up living another three years. I truly believe that God sent Michael to save him.
