Lordofzeldafed Only when they are tumbling, which means they have hit something that caused them to be unstable in flight. Straight flying bullets make a loud crack noise, which is basically the "sonic boom" coming off the bullet as it passes you by.

Im guessing when a bullet is perfectly shaped then theres no whistling and it gets distorted or flattened or mashed up when it hits something like the ground as you say and thafs what causes the different sound. I know theyre obviously still a danger but after hitting the ground like that can they still penetrate a person and kill him or her? or would it just be a matter if having an eye taken out or some type if lesser wound than a round that hits someone at full force? Any idea? just curious and you seem pretty knowledgeable about it.

+Mike Lazembie yes they still pose a lot of danger. Even though it is tumbling it can still retain nearly all of its velocity shortly after it is destabilized, but it will start to shed velocity faster after that. If you can hear that movie "pyoooong" sound, that means the bullet is still supersonic, but it is tumbling. That crazy sound happens because the bullet is still supersonic, so every time it tumbles the "new" leading edge of the bullet creates a sonic boom. So instead of having one continuous sonic front like you have with a stable bullet, the tumbling causes many new sonic fronts and thus the weird sound. A bullet which has destabilized but is now transonic (below speed of sound) will sound like a buzzing. Like a loud bee or wasp. Those have shed enough velocity that you might live should it hit you.

All rifle bullets make a Whistling noise when they go by you. A ricochet would sound like a zippy whistling sound. For them to whistle they have to be very close.

We use suppressive fire for a lot of reasons. It's mostly either to keep them from advancing on us or to allow us to move. It's not really used that often for spotting, since the enemy is usually going to be hiding when under fire. That doesn't mean you can't get lucky and see them, which is why the gunner keeps telling them to look west.

RandomCanEHdian its more for keeping enemies from peeking from where they were. Meaning, if they have a shot on troops on one position, keeping them from that position will give the gunner's allies a turn to lay down some lead on them

Depends on the situation. I was involved in The battle of Baghak. My patrol was ambushed on a hill which stopped the Humvee convoy to give us support. What we looked for was dust disturbance and muzzle flash and since i was 2 platoons Designated marksman, i had to scan the area(Where the direction of the enemy gun shot sounds were coming from). Only time to call it quits is when there is confirmation on enemy positioning and when we know we have sufficient support to be able to fall back.

They do have optics(scopes) capable of seeing the enemy firing positions. Rifleman/Gunners suppress the enemy in long range engagements while another unit moves to flank. Generally direct long range shots are for the marksman.

Fabrique Nationale is the best. Wouldn't go with anyone else and I'm glad the Australian army uses a majority of FN products. The Belgians are true engineering masters.

As an Army Veteran from 1999-2001 I can tell you the tactics: The M240B or any other LMG is not designed to kill people. It is designed to scare them and make them seek cover and stop shooting. This allows a clean line of fire for the rifleman to find the enemy target and service him with rifle rounds without the fear of being shot at. So what's happening here is the LMG is suppressing the enemy and the rifleman are also suppressing while they hunt for their target's exact position.

The 2 m240s in a platoon arr the platoons most casualty producing weapon. The weapons squad's job is just asmuch for the purpose of killing as any other weapon. Due to the high volume of fire of the 240, yhe enemy is rendered incapable of menuever. This allows ther squads in the platoon, or gire teams if the guns are attached to a squad, to menuever, close with, and destroy the enemy or allow for the effective use of enablers like mortors. Scaring the enemy aint it. Guaranteeing death outside of cover is.

They are made of compressed mud, clay, feces, and straw and they provide great cover, just mind the edges because those parts get crumbly. Better than sandbags from my experience in Sangin 2010-2011. 3/5 Lima.

Every time I see a video of a 240B, as much as I love it, I get memories of the weight.

Got to love the M240 Bravo. I loved my M4/203 rifle

Generally you see muzzle flash(dependig how close the enemy is), dust kickoff from the pressure ejecting from the barrel when firing or you shoot where you locate sound/hear shots coming from. But alot of the time you will see the enemy in combat unless they're a long distance all you can do is hope you spot tracers or rely on your optics.

yes, there are small changes in the thickness of the case, the way the bottleneck is structured and a few other small things. the .308winchester and 7.62 nato are close enough alike to be mixed up with each other but different enough to require their own separate structure in a gun to work optimally.

I'm specifically talking about stopping power. There has been multiple times where soldiers have doubted the stopping power of the 5.56 over heavier rounds.

If you ever been shot at from an unknown location but you know the direction of witch the fire is coming from and you spray in that direction till some one gets eyes on a better direction of where there firing from, after that, radio in air support and problem solved in less that ten mins

Much better than playing videogame.

From what I've read, they can probably save your life against glancing blows, but not a direct hit. It also depends on what kind of bullet hits the helmet. Obviously you'd stand a much better chance at surviving against bullets with less velocity. Otherwise, helmets are mostly there to protect against shrapnel caused by explosions. That's why they started being commonly used during World War I. I'm only a civilian though, so you should defer to explanations by actual service members/veterans.

Bullets really do make that cracking sound.

I remember learning to take that gun apart at the National guard post up in cadillac when my tech school class was doing training and the troops were showing off the toys.... Got my dis-assembly and reassembly time down to 1:30 even. good times.

I love how they're in war right now with people who want to kill them and they're so calm about it!
