Getting Started with Shark Byte:
- Any FPV goggles or display with HDMI input. I have Fat Shark HDO2.
- FatShark Shark Byte RX5.1 Receiver Module: bit.ly/3acLQ9O
- Two SMA antennas of your choice to go on top of the RX. They should be RHCP to match the patch antennas that are built-in.
Parts I Recommend (not exactly what I used):
- Shark Byte TX5S.1 single board digital VTX: bit.ly/2PW8eNR
- Runcam Nano HD Camera: bit.ly/3e1GgIp
or Foxeer Digisight V2 (I have not used it, but it is another option): bit.ly/32iNcLD

- FPVCycle 13mm 7700KV Motors (if you can find them in stock): bit.ly/2XWcOvQ
OR Happymodel 1202.5 6400KV Motors (what I used here): bit.ly/3wZFdkG
OR other motor with similar size and KV.
- BetaFPV 12A F405 Whoop AIO. It is light and has good features. It also has motor plugs, which you could use or remove: bit.ly/3acAjr5
OR BetaFPV 20A F405 Toothpick AIO for an even easier and more robust build: bit.ly/3mPbiqR
- Gemfan 3018 2-blade props (1.5mm shaft or 2mm shaft depending on your motors): bit.ly/2T9KkNW
or Gemfan 3016 3-blade props (these fly smoother, but they have less power for pulling out of dives): bit.ly/36REC7a
- RHCP Singularity Antenna with U.FL (I recommend not using the "short" one. It is harder to get a good antenna placement): bit.ly/3uMgi2e
- Crossfire Nano Receiver (or receiver of your choice): bit.ly/3mO7ZAa

It is really refreshing to hear a reviewer who's impartial about the DJI/Shark Byte thing; they're different, they perform best in different situations/styles/quads, one is not better than the other, I believe, they just do different things, and both do them well. I'm partial to Fat Shark simply because I don't like the way DJI doesn't really play with others, and Fat Shark has been a big part of, and supporter of, the FPV community from the very beginning, and even tho it took them many, many years to put a stupid power button on their goggles, I still appreciate their involvement with the hobby, as opposed to DJI... But again, just my two cents... Anyway, LOVE the build, I'm building something similar, as far as size/weight goes, but with different components... If it flies halfway as good as this one, I'll be thrilled! Excellent work, thank you for showing us your process of designing & building!

Thanks for the thoughtful clarity of your presentation, especially the detail in the description. The crashes were valuable to see as well, it didn't really seem like any were due to breakup/lag or SharkByte issues. It's also really nice to see an reasonable (believable) advocation for SharkByte maybe not vs. DJI, but perhaps as a sometime alternate. Great, as always - cheers!

Hi shutterbug, I've a little recommendation that could be useful for you, the form I desolder the connectors is connecting a motor to it, soldering the 3 pins and let the motor be on the air, with nothing under it, and then overheat the solder, it comes off in just a few seconds!

Really cool build! You make some great points about the shark byte system. I'm all in on DJI right now but have been considering shark byte for racing at least, unless DJI is able to fix the latency issue. The weight is another plus for shark byte. I do hate fatshark as a company though lol. Plenty of reasons to hate on DJI too I guess. Whatever, I'm just happy to have HD FPV.

I fly in a tight backyard too and I've been enjoying the analog crux3. This is the first video that really got me thinking about Shark Byte. Unfortunately since I have the old Dominator HD2 I would need to replace those too or deal with less than full resolution. Hopefully even lighter stuff comes out and fatshark can find a niche in micros.

  • @achuvikov

    @achuvikov

I am in the similar boat, I do have HD3 though(but with the same resolution). I feel like having 720p resolution is probably not as important because I don't think sharkbyte's video is truly 720p, it just not as sharp as it should be and noticeably worse than DJI FPV system which I think is 720p. I suspect internally it's less and just upscaled to 720p. I did the experiment and made a video where I fly using phone camera and played back it in my HD3. It looked much more detailed than what I saw with sharkbyte recordings. So I feel like the video most likely would be limited by sharkbyte system rather than goggles resolution unless you go lower to like non-HD Dominators which are 480p

id love to see a truly engineered whoop build. one that takes an initial flight time and thrust to weight ratio, and then selects the components to meet those requirements. prop selection, motor kv, FC board v and i rating. etc. eCalc is a tool i havent seen mentioned by any YT drone content developers yet its been a mainstay for fixed wing and heli builders for year..and has a fantastic drone design feature. for racing, the tool allows you to predict top speed and acceleration from the setup you choose. we used to use it for pylon racing and it was more than once used to win RC fixed win events..almost everyone else was just guessing and relying on subjective testing..which becomes expensive.

I’ve gotten a lot of requests for that. Maybe I’ll show it on a different build. I use antenna extension cables and cut them to length. It’s a coax cable. The outer mesh goes to ground. The inner wire goes to the antenna pad on the FC. Then you just have to strip away the mesh on the other end to expose the active part of the antenna. 12.92mm of the inner wire should be exposed with no mesh around it. That’s 1/4 wavelength at 5.8GHz. Hope that helps.

that camera mount is fantastic! It would be even better if there were several angle options availabe. Unfortunately I am completely hopeless in these types of programs. Would you mind providing additional stl files for different camera angles (up to 45 deg ideally ^^)

Good timing! I just uploaded them! Link in the video description. Now in 30, 35, 40, and 45 deg. I also shaved a bit of material off the back to make them lighter (fraction of a gram). Let me know what you think!

Here's a 1 minute clip. It was compressed by the DVR in my Shark Byte receive, but it has not been recompressed after that. I simply trimmed it using ffmpeg (fast and lossless). You will see that there are little squares of interference quite often. I later discovered that my small 100uF capacitor was at least partly to blame. I switched to a 220uF capacitor and now I get less of that breakup. Fat Shark recommends a 330uF capacitor (it comes with the VTX) but I decided that was too big for this particular build. Cheers! drive.google.com/file/d/1X1JlsulwT616VH8edMj2nM1-wGCZ6fuu/view?usp=sharing

Sweet. Sooo, you gonna call this one SharkTooth or what? Not in to the fireplace! LOL. I flew my whoop in to the lit fireplace this winter, thankfully the fire was almost out and it landed in the corner, but it was the quickest I've moved in a while.

Is there much of a difference in mounting the battery sideways instead of straight? Havn‘t tried it yet but my batterys are all rotated by 90° to yours

Joshua Bardwell is borrowing my Shark Byte build. He already released a video about his latest decased Vista 3" build. He will be showing my build soon, so I imagine he'll be sharing some of his perspective on the tradeoffs. Should be interesting!

ive only flown dji drones my smallest one is the iflight 75mm i find it heavy. I am really contemplating going shark bite or just straight analog. but i hate to have to get goggles and radio. im really deep into dji already and i only been in the hobby about a year. its addicting and i just have one of those personality's

You'll need different goggles to fly HDZero, but if you decide to try analog, then you could make it work with the AV-in jack on your DJI goggles. I know several people who do that.
