Building an Ultra-Light Digital FPV Camera for HDZero / SharkByte

With this new camera, my HDZero 1S Whoop is now just 22.8 grams, and it has the widest FOV I have ever seen on a digital FPV system! Full parts list below (click SHOW MORE).

Exact parts I used for this camera:
- Runcam Nano HD Camera: bit.ly/3yGNVpn
- Lens from a Wolfwhoop WT07 analog camera: amzn.to/2XV7g6a
- NinjaTek Armadillo TPU: amzn.to/3HA1omL
Build Notes:
- Camera: I used the older Runcam Nano HD camera. It has an orange body and a 14x14mm back plate. The newer Runcam/HDZero branded nano camera has a different size back plate (14x16mm) and a different size sensor. I also have the Foxeer Digisight V2. It could work but it is not as light even after you remove all the analog wires because the sensor itself is encased in a thicker piece of glass.
- Lens: I like the WT07 lens because it is ultra wide. The downside is that you have to remove the glue to get it off. I used a tiny screwdriver to break through the glue and then pry it off in pieces. There are lots of other whoop cameras with the same size lens however. If it has an IR filter, then it will probably work. Pick your favorite and give it a try (if you're feeling brave enough to modify a $50 camera, that is).
3D Printer Models:
- STL file for the camera body I used: bit.ly/3oxEWTE
- Remix the TinkerCad project if you want to modify the parameters: bit.ly/3GBrWlY

Frikkin awesome Nate! Man, just 2-3 years ago I was like, there is NO WAY we will get HD on a whoop. Look at where we are at now! Crazy. I'm really wanting to get my hands on some borken....even broken HDZero vtx's to try to salvage and fix. I'm still waiting for some more VRX's to come on the market, held off too long, I should have bought one last year. Great work man!!! EDIT: I could probably fix those traces depending on how bad they are. But would love to grab broken stuff if possible.

Any concerns with overheating or the body distorting as the camera heats up? One of the reasons the camera manufacturers use metal is for heat dissipation. That said, an aluminium or (probably too expensive) magnesium body might be ideal for that and still hit your weight goals. Let's hope Runcam see this and runs with it.

Good question, but I think it will be OK. This TPU prints at 210-230 deg C. If the camera heats up to even half of that then we’ll have other problems. Aren’t most FPV camera bodies made of molded plastic.

@@MrShutterBug well, I'm watching/following your development closely, as I would like to use a similar system in micro RC cars for indoor FPV racing. Though an analogue system is easy, my challenges on going to true HD have always been: 1) heat (no props to cool the electronics in a car); 2) weight and size (same challenges as in 65-75mm whoop); and 3) field of view (for a realistic racing experience)...maybe 4) "faked" head tracking by attaching the camera to the car's steering servo. Your work has inspired me to soldier on, and I think an under 5 gram HD system is 90% there now. (In 2018, when I first started working on this, the Connex system I used was over 50 grams and cost nearly $500. DJI is lighter/better by far, but still way too heavy... HDZero looks like it might be the answer).

It has been a while since I ran a camera without an IR filter, but I believe it would result in very low contrast making the image look washed out. The sensor would pick up IR light all over the image, including parts of the image that your eye would normally see as being dark.

Talk to Bob Roogie (KababFPV from FPV Cycle). I think he built something like that just to see if he could. I believe he said it was possible, but personally I don't see any advantage of 1S at that size. Higher voltage means less current, which means less heat, less need for thick wires, less damage to the batteries, etc.

How some of this vid confuses me is that since the title is almost always involving how to add a CAM to get better video then I always thought that when they talk 2.4hz (like radio transmitters frequency like you say) that they would be talking about how to better view the video through the frequency 2.4hz. So now that I got that clear. What frequency is best to use with the Fat Shark Scout with long range?. Your assistance is much appreciated.

I have no 3D printing experience, but I feel that for the case's threads, you'd want to print an undersized hole with no threads, and then use an actual M8 tap die to cut the proper threads. I personally just mainly fly whoops and analogue, but I appreciate what you have been doing. Whenever/whichever brand of HD FPV format wins the whoop format race will likely be my first purchases into the format. I just hope they respect interchangeability as I don't want to buy a new pair of goggles (I am using Orqa goggles).

  • @Imakilln

    @Imakilln

    2 жыл бұрын

No need to tap most 3d printed parts, I find just slightly undersizing the hole is fine and most threads will just cut themselves into the plastic as they go and hold perfectly fine so long as you're not constantly inserting/removing them. Also, honestly if you like racing whoops HD Zero is probably going to be the winner for a while! If you're happy for something larger/heavier DJI's image is better but I seriously doubt we'll see more improvement/miniaturization from DJI for a while as the FPV sector is just too small for them to care. Orqa could surprise with their new system but they're probably still a year away and will be focussing on larger quads.

Threads on TPU, what is this black magic 😁I don't understand why the camera manufacturers refuse to do the research and find the wide angle cameras for us, considering they have the financial motive to do so. And it's not just the FPV cameras, it's the cheapo HD cameras too, the 120 degrees just doesn't do it for us, we need +150 and are even willing to accept the degraded imagequality (insta360 go) to have it. A lot of the cheapo chipsets can do 100mbps encoding as it's standardized, so the only thing restricting the performance of these cameras really is the optics. If you go through the trouble of designing the board, writing the firmware, then why on earth do you shit on your product with the cheapest optics on the planet? Some of the sensors have the IR filter built on the sensor, so they don't need the filter. Vignetting is the most common problem, chromatic aberrations are another. Abbe is rarely any good on these cameras but it always amazes me to see lack of contrast due to the lack of anti-reflective coating on the lens. That one is actually kind of a big problem with the ND filters, some of them let the light bounce between the lens and the filter so you can see the reflection of the lens on your ND filter spoiling your footage. Saving money from the wrong end of things is just stupid 🤷‍♂
