Building a Root Cellar under my Log Cabin, Making Dinner for my Wife, Forest Garden Potato Harvest

With cold weather finally here, I prioritize harvesting the vegetable gardens, building shelves and installing lights and a fan in the root cellar under the cabin to store the vegetables and other food. On the wood stove, I light the first indoor fire of the season and cook my wife a beef stew.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Your wife is a lucky woman. I imagine you would be comfortable living in your shed, but you are building all the comforts of home for her. You are also lucky to have her! She has stayed with you on your journey through thick and thin. Your marriage is truly blessed.

Agree, don't want to presume anything, but the must important thing I learned the hard way in my 64 years and to many relations, is give space and ask for it to live and enjoy your separate but joined lives and no I don't mean free love perse.

I am 81 years old and this is the way my grandparents lived growing up and then raised their family the same way. They didn't have inside bathroom or inside running water. During the depression they lived comfortably with plenty to eat they raised their meat and grew their vegetables and fruit and canned everything even their meat that they didn't cure.

I just watched a story about someone storing potatoes for an extended period of time in a cellar with no ventilation and the potatoes produced a toxic fume that killed a family. Always safety first. Im sure you're aware of this possibility. Love the vids!

A really critical step in self-reliance is having a place to "store" the food that you grow in the garden. As a child my grandparents had a root cellar and it was quite a learning experience on not just piling up the potatoes, carrots, etc. but actually caring for them in order to have veggies for the long cold winter. I look forward to hearing and seeing your progress in this regard.

Yes, I don't know how much rodent problems you will have getting into your food stores, but at least you don't have to watch for Copperheads in your cellar like everyone used to here in the southeastern U.S....here in the Appalachians, it was common for the older folks to wear high leather boots, thick gloves, and carry a hoe for defense/dispatching Copperheads in their root cellars back in the day...

Absolutely agree, Aubieal... as I sit here with internet access...it's almost shocking to realize how far removed I am from the way my grandmother lived - canning, baking, plucking chickens, stoking a stove--and certainly no LG washer/dryer on laundry day....11 kids. ; ) We feel "fortunate" and then I watch this fellow and wonder "are we?" @@aubieal0878

I got up early this Saturday morning, put a huge pot of chilli on the stove, made a coffee and went to my computer, and found this. I don`t know if you realize, how great this made my Saturday morning, I love these videos, building, harvesting, storage, the whole thing, these videos are fantastic to me, When you had that fire going, and the stew on the stove, that cabin looked so cozy, it`s incredible what you achieved, by yourself, the place looks homey, and secure. I thought you were nuts when I seen you digging out the basement by hand, boy did that payoff for you, beautiful nice dry storage, you can add moisture if needed, or not, what a well thought plan, and with the ventilation, you should be good to go. It is absolutely incredible sir, what you have pulled off by yourself, I can still remember you stacking the wall logs in the snow, like it was yesterday, well done, from Michigan.

I never kept fresh onions and potatoes near each other in the pantry. I don’t have a freeze dryer or I would be playing with it. I am learning to can neat and fish with my pressure canner this year. I’m 78 yo so this is a fun adventure. Thanks for teaching me new things. It’s fun to think about living in the cabin and cooking in the outdoor kitchen. Love it!! Thanks a bunch!❤❤❤

My grandmother lived in middle TN. Her house was built on the side of a hill (front ground lvl, back was built on a stone base. It had a well down there, and what I remember was her making sauerkraut and the cabbages from her garden stored on the shelves in the cellar. I know she did some canning also. We were never there in winter - so don't know what else she stored. Now as an older adult, I wish I had learned from her.

I'm going to throw out an idea for you to consider....Once winter arrives, wouldn't it be nice if you or your wife had a channel called "Tales at the Cabin" or "Fireside Tales"? I feel sure this would be really appreciated. There are so many elderly shut in's, and people who just love or NEED to take the time to stop and relax. Nothing like a good story told inside a cabin by the fire. When I was very little, my beloved father used to cuddle up next to me and make up stories about cabin life, and the woods outside. I keep a picture of a cabin in the woods by my bedside to remind me of those sweet days. Dad has been gone since 2006, and I will probably soon join him, but I sure do miss those stories.

I can remember the “old” people having outhouses, smoke houses, cellars , out side hand dug wells with well houses and buckets and ropes. Nothing tasted better than a swallow of clean fresh water pulled up with a bucket and a rope and drank out of a dipper.

This cabin is even better than the old one. So well planned and thought out. It had to be that you had to leave the old cabin and so something great could be created. Just the fact that the cellar is directly under the cabin and is protected from animals... this is just fantastic. I love it. Thanks for sharing

I know some people dont like to put them in stew but I absolutely love turnips in my stew. Turnips are so underated when talking about vegetables.

Fantastic video. You had a great harvest. I always learn something each time I watch you. The shelving and storage are excellent. Cali looks a little older now. Seems like her puppy stage is over and she is such a beautiful dog. Nice to see you and your wife enjoying dinner. Everything you have is so nice because your work is excellent. 😀Thanks for the video.

The one thing that I like watching most in your videos is when you harvest your garden. It’s so relaxing watching you dig those potatoes, as if you’re digging gold.
