Building an Off Grid Cold Cellar, Log Cabin Life, Cast Iron Cooking

I'm finishing the root cellar one section at at time - this week I install a floor in the breezeway section, move the freezer back into place and set up a metal rack to store mason jars full of preserved and dried food. On the new wood cookstove, I make moose and lasagna sandwiches with fresh homemade sourdough bread.

Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I use to watch Emeril Lagasse cook back in the day. Now I watch Shawn James cook, so satisfying just watching him slicing bread lol Watching him build new editions on the cabin is just a bonus.

It is wonderful to visit the cabin, see Cali and her toy, enjoy the parade of proud turkeys gliding through the woods, hear the sounds of lunch being prepared and cooked, listen to fire wood being chopped. I'm so glad of the opportunity to escape the clammer of the world even if for just a short while. Thank you for the respite.🕊🦃🦌🫖📚🖖✨️

Whilst the content is always good, and 'Cali' contributes so much, eating in the wilderness is mightily well portrayed in your videos. I am sure meal breaks are enjoyable, and you certainly know how to get our senses provoked - I would eat at your place any day of the week😋😋👍

Hi Shawn, I work in IT and have had the same issue you mentioned with internal and external hard drives. Word of warning, I’ve had nothing but problems with Seagate drives so my recommendation is to steer clear of that brand. Never buy SATA drives because of moving parts when bumped or dropped can damage the read/write head. Very sensitive to vibration. Purchase SSD, no moving parts and tend to be more reliable and stable. Not as sensitive to vibration and dropping. You still want to take care not to drop them but not near as sensitive. My preference is Western Digital, SanDisk, Crucial, Kingston. Hope this helps with your future storage issues.

  • @Night_A

One 8TB SSD that won't crap itself after year or two can cost over grand, which is not going to cut it in terms of capacity even if he were to invest in one. A smarter approach would be to buy a NAS with high-capacity mechanical drives in a redundant configuration (like RAID-1 or RAID-10, with RAID-6 being the ideal if something like ZFS isn't an option). There's plenty of small office variants that could do the trick. Also the branding really isn't an indicator for quality. I can tell a similar story to yours where i had WD Red and Gold series drives die on me in rapid succession, all while their Seagate counterparts from the IronWolf and Exos series tanking through even with indications of impending failure. It really depends more on the party of drives you wind up pulling from, which can wary with every manufacturer. Btw, SATA is just the name of the interface (which is also used by SSD's). What you're probably referring to is mechanical drives (HDD's) vs solid-state drives (SSD's), the latter of which doesn't have moving parts but can have a more limited amount of read/write cycles.

Hi, electronics guy here. There's a very strong possibility the problem with the drive is just a bad USB connection, and if so the repair or recovery should be relatively simple in that case. Most of the time a data recovery for me is just a USB repair. Best of luck with it, and the sneak peak of the basement is looking good!

@@user-nc2cn8dc6c Look up the science. I don’t make stuff up. And the needs of a portion of a population do not automatically transfer to the rest of it. The nutritional requirements of segments of the population do indeed vary, as well as there being variations in the need for supplements based upon the nutrients in the environment. For example, my location is low in selenium, and high in calcium and iron. It is a fact that cast iron adds iron to foods, especially if the food cooked is acidic. Please do research…and I’m not saying that as an insult, I’m saying it with sincere respect for your intelligence.

Here's a tip for using crusty bread: Once you cut it, stand the loaf up with the cut side down. That prevents the cut side from drying out, and slows down molding by preventing spores from reaching the cut surface as easily. With a round loaf or a long loaf it may also help to cut it in half first, then keep BOTH halves on their cut side. This helps keep the loaf from falling over as easily. Storing crusty bread in plastic bags can hold in moisture softening the crust, especially if the laof's still warm, so storing it on the cut side both keeps the bread from drying out, AND the crust from loosing it's crispness.

He talked about baking his own sourdough bread and the benefits of eating it, and also eating more fermented foods. I can only image that now, years later with his high-yield gardens and game meats, that he's as fit as a fiddle. I also remember him saying he was giving up all alcohol, which I assume was just social drinking. I'm sure he stuck to that as well.

The backup from the backup. I learned on the hard way too. And that will never happen again. Stored in an old munition box fill with thick lead walls and earthed. ;-)

I sent a hard drive to a data recovery team and I thought for sure they wouldn't be able to retrieve it but they did! Photos of my dad that were irreplaceable b/c he has since passed. I have multiple copies now. It was expensive but worth every penny!

I noticed you have alot of wild turkeys roaming in your woods . You wouldn't have to go to the store to buy one for Christmas or Thanksgiving. I enjoy your videos so much. I thank God that he brought me to your channel and that he has blessed you beyond in what you do. You are truly amazing with your hands. His Bless You.Happy Holidays.

G’day Shawn again interesting watching what ya do ✌️ I just checked your temperature and see it’s 4.23 pm and -1 we sometimes get that down here in Tasmania but mid winter and yes I don’t mind it. Currently in Western Australia it’s 40 degrees Phewwww to damn hot hence the fact I moved to Tassie 👌 about 5 months ago I visited Toronto yes she’s a nice city but very busy 🤪 Down here there’s some magnificent lakes, rivers and beautiful inlets. Yes your way of life has always appealed to me. I accidentally met a couple down here about a year ago from Kamloops and we struck up a friendship but unfortunately he was in Alberta fighting the fires when I passed through. Anyway Shawn all the best and stay safe.Kind regards James SHAW. 👍✌️
