Build a Log Cabin Porch | Bear Lasagna in the Off Grid Forest Kitchen

#bear #logcabin #offgrid
I use my hand tools to build the entrance portion of the deck under the covered porch on my off grid log cabin after making lasagna and lard from bear meat and fat that my friend Jeremy brought me last week. This is the time of year to stock the pantry with food foraged, hunted, fished and harvested. I flashback to my last two days in Alaska, fishing for pink salmon in a small creek.

I love and are inspired by what you have done with timber. That Log cabin is amazing and reminds me of Grizzly Adams. I certainly could live that type of life. So much less stressful but yet fulfilling. Making your own meals, living off the land, building everything from what nature has to offer. I can smell that good food over here in Australia.

What a gift God has given you, Shawn James. I just started watching your channels and I just love them. I just sit for hours and watch video after video. Retired. I live in a small Indiana town. I love a primitive, rustic, country feel. Your wife is blessed to have you, and you are very blessed to have each other. May God bless your self reliance lifestyle, but we both know He is the one in control of your cool rains of blessings. That beautiful four legged creature, Cali is adorable!!! You two are a good fit! :)

Shawn, I've been following your channel since your second or third video ( cant remember clearly ), and I must say I have noticed how you have changed. At the beginning you were somewhat a bitter man, disappointed and fed up with other "people" / your surrounding trying to get the best of you. But you knew life is beautiful, you struggled, never gave up, you believed in something, you have worked hard on fulfilling that dream + you had your family supporting you, and now.... now we can see you smiling :) and what a beautiful smile it is ! Thank you for sharing your beautiful story with us... Much respect and love from Serbia.

When you finish rendering the fat, strain it through cotton muslin or equivalent fabric. That will remove the tiny bits that pass through your strainer. You can render additional fat from those crackling, if you continue rendering in an oven (of some type). Better heat control, at that stage, to prevent burning. After, as much fat, as is practical, is rendered, the cracklings will keep for a while. Great for munching, seasoning of vegetables, and added to bread dough. Nothing goes to waste. When I was a kid, we rendered pork lard using my Mother's castiron washpot. Used a wooden paddle (like a small boat paddle) to keep them stirred. BTW, once the included pork skin was done (before it turned crispy) it was delicious in one of Mama's homemade biscuits. Especially when standing around the fire under that washpot on a cold December day. (Traditional butchering day in my part of the southeast USA.)

I love that kitchen. I had to stop eating that way though. I had a massive heart attack this past June. I'm 51, genetics and years of ignoring my diet finally had it's consequences. I had a triple bypass and I feel better than I have since my 30's. So this is my second chance and I will make the most of it. However my outdoor kitchen that I will build myself on my camp lot will see less fat and more fiber. My advice to those in their late 40's early 50's, if you feel yourself slowing down and think that you are just getting old. Get yourself to your doctor and listen to him/her.

Shawn, you're bringing back my rough framing days from 40 years ago, no nailguns, but we used wormdrive skilsaws.... those 20d's or bigger spikes look fun, remember to "oil your elbows" at the end of the day, haha!

Wow, Shawn you are quite the Chef too. Bear Lasagna. I love those Wide noodles you used. The food looked just amazing, and the herbs from your garden. You seem very content with your life, when it is obviously at your favorite place. These videos are captivating and I can't wait for the next ones. Keep up the great projects and meal preparations. Again thanks for sharing.

This video was fabulous, theres so much that i loved. When you were on the porch building and took a break and were talking about it and how the sun was at different times of day and in different seasons, and the wind direction..well I loved it all. The cooking, adding and talking about the ingredients...guess what I will have for breakfast soon..lol. People in the normal city don't hardly look up nor notice the birds singing nor the animal sounds etc.. I do now especially since I am home mostly and close to country. I am a N.Y city kid and now couldnt live in a big city anymore but to visit. If I were rich there IS farmland in N.Y statr tho. Hi Cali..anyway... Thank you for sharing with us.

I keep watching these videos on the TV through my Roku connection, but cannot comment at the time. Then I forget to do so until I am on my laptop going through old emails. But then I get to review what I watched previously, and enjoy it a 2nd time. As always, stay safe.
