Meat Eater | Moose, Deer and Bear from the Wilderness, Bone Broth, Tallow in the Cold November Rain

Cold November rain, snow and mild sunny weather from one day to the next, but all suitable temperatures to butcher and wrap moose, bear and deer steaks and mincemeat and to render tallow and simmer bone broth on the wood cookstove in the outdoor kitchen. The challenges of harvesting, processing and storing meat at an off grid log cabin homestead are apparent this year and I talk about what plans on have to make next year's harvest season more efficient.

People might be freaked out by the outdoor kitchen countertops... meanwhile the go into the kirchen and cut stuff up on butcher boards all the time. Plastic is hard to clean... you rub salt into a butcher board to clean it. Stainless ruins the blade on a knife and you have to sharpen often. Right now, you did the best you could with what you have. I am pretty sure your great great grandchildren will know about you and all you built.

It's a darn shame that media (and people) these days prefers to ignore the reality of how food is produced, and a person like you has to address less than a hospital-type sterilized environment. I believe the meat you processed today is healthier than anything bought in a store. The small bacteria you "might" pick up will be killed in any good cooking process. In addition, you have thought out your processing and preserving well. I have processed meat in much less sterile locations (as ALL of our ancestors) and I am alive and well today at 70. Thanks for the video.

Yeah, if anything it's the factory farmed supermarket meat and even _some vegetables_ that have a tendency to get contaminated with stuff like E-coli, salmonella etc. There's an alarming amount of cross contamination on factory farms too, when things like lettuce or cabbages are grown way too close to cattle farms. There are serious cases of E-coli every year in the U.S. and even deaths. In nature though, the only thing I'd be worried about is rabies-infected meat.

Thank you for taking me back to my roots. Sanitation, we did it in the woods. The complete process and use of the game is something most hunters don't do. Being indigenous every piece of the kill we use. Wild boar that eat acorns are a treasured meat in Italy, I bet the deer and moose will have a wonderful flavor. Thanks again Shawn. Enjoy your self sufficient lifestyle.

Noble or not, it is real and the homesteads are often a work in progress. Looks like the real or correct life to me. Hopefully with _some_ modern conveniences ... like fuel powered vehicles, tools, and even a few electrics to go along with wood burners and walk in freezers. Sean is definitely giving his family options, for sure - which is great. Maybe the aquatic life is better? Maybe the cabin in the woods life is best. To each his or her own. Either way - we are stewards of the land, air and sea.

Exactly how my grandparents used to put up meat. Wrap with freezer paper, tape and pencil to mark what it was. We got 1/2 a hog and 1/2 a steer. All butchered then we packaged and froze it. Also stuffed out own sausage and sometimes ground our own beef. We have an old wood table from my wife's family that they used to butcher all their hogs on. It has many cuts on it. They never died from any diseases. We now have it as a dinner table. It now has a glass top because it has so many grooves in it. But it's beautiful and has many memories.

Shawn also has the plant form cross the ways from that shed so he could make that into another refrigerator or freezer !!! It is where they do the maple syrup also !!!

Just popping back after listening to the podcast you mentioned. Tbh, I stopped asking questions after you replied to me once about your workshop after you had told us and showed us your new cabin property a few years back. I’d noticed that the flora didn’t match up around the huger culture garden/root cellar/workshop with the new property. Even after your reply to original question, a few other things then caused me to question my sanity. No chicken coop after you said you were building one… etc. Figured you were protecting something real important to you and decided whatever it was was certainly none of my business. It’s enough that you’ve shared your adventures at the newbuild cabin. It’s been a tough few years for many of us. Best wishes to you and your beautiful, precious family. [virtual hugs]

I love to use hand tools, chisels, axes, and wood ideas. I built small cabin in my back yard, but would like to make bigger cabin too. In Ukraine was big forest next to my house, that goes to Latvia , really big, with big huge oak trees, birch, and ash , hornbeam, maple... different types of wood. I loved just walk for hours to get plenty of berries, many varieties of delicious mushrooms, and of course really fresh air. And next to forest 3 huge lakes , fishing, ducks, dears, huge elks, wild pigs, I was young and didn’t hind, but was fishing a lot, it was really good place to spend time. Thank you so much for great videos and your skills to hunt , cook, nan of course BUILD and work with wood. All of this Gods created land, forest, fresh air, and our life. Toast the first side of each piece, then flip it to the inside and put the cheese on the hot toasted side making the sandwich. Then just cook it as you would the grilled cheese sandwich toasting one side, flipping the sandwich and toasting the other side. This helps with the cheese melting and makes a super crisp sandwich.

I mean he could, probably behind a pay wall, so those that pay for the content do not strike it down - like all the zombies love to do. Sean does set a good example. Also way less annoying sound tracks. Those demotivational tracks, esp with "signing" or whatever hollering that is called, "signing" makes dead cat suffer.

In food processing, the wooden block for cutting meat is disinfected if you put a 3 cm layer of salt on it and leave it overnight. This is how food processing professionals kill bacteria on porous work surfaces that cannot be disinfected in any other way.

I’m a meat eater also not wild game and I love my beef and chicken and pork but I can’t watch them be killed or cleaned for eating. I could never be a farmer I would starve cause I would want them all for pets lol😂. I admire you and your family being able to do what I can’t!! Love your channel but had to fast forward most of all this week’s episode

I'm 65 yo woman. My son just got deer, you have to change your mind set, it's meat in your freezer. It's either meat/ poultry you don't know what they're fed or where it comes from or vaccinated with, or it's game that eat natural diet. It's not for everyone. Game you can soak in milk, takes gaminess out. Deer is like beef in my house.
