You need to carve steps into the ground then line them with flat stones. So you have better footing.

You can heat a small place with a wood cookstove but a heating stove is slow to cook on bc it takes more time to heat pans to cooking temperature, and they usually have a small firebox. If I had to choose only one for a long stay it would be a cook stove with as big a firebox as I could find.
