Off Grid Log Cabin Life | Long Term Food Storage, Moose Hunting, Solar Power, Firewood, Archery

A busy autumn week focused on food, heat and power - harvesting vegetables from the garden and storing them in the cold cellar, installing solar panels for electricity, moose hunting for meat, cutting firewood and shingling the firewood shed, traditional archery practice for deer season, cooking with cast iron on the wood stove and keeping my dog Cali the golden retriever entertained.

Fascinating to witness all the planning that went into a root celler full of high quality food. I learned a lot, even though I have been a student of and root-cellaring since the day I stepped into my great aunt's on the Kansas prairie. It was an Aladdin's cave of colors and smells, in baskets, on shelves, in crocks, the long strings of onions and peppers. Of course she also grew her own lemons, the size of big oranges, in her own little greenhouse, this back in 1965! You are keeping a true art form alive, Mr. James. Aunt Lillian would have loved you.

Gratification you must have for yourself knowing youve done it all by yourself. Just amzaing. You truly are a man of the wilderness and have conqured everything life has thrown at you. I love the ambience of the view through your window from the outside in with just enough light to give it that cozy cabin look and feel. What a wonderful dream your living, the one you've always wanted to build and live. To have to start all over again after the issues with those miserable people at the old cabin you sold and to be where you are today with the new cabin is truly a blessing. Still more to build but your settled in really nicely now and can just relax and build at your leisure. Congratulations on the wonderful accomplishment, Shawn.

It terrifies me when you swing your axe with Cali coming up behind you. All your food looked delicious and your cabin at night with the view of the stars….oh my - what you’ve created Shawn is a real bit o heaven on earth 👼

Hi :-)! I was told that if you leave the dirt on the potatoes and other root vegetables that they last longer... I'm glad you have expanded from your last house plan...this house can hold many family members and will last generations...your videos can be a class to teach this type of architecture in the future...

You have a gift, Shawn. Watching you cut down trees , build with you hands, then live in your construction, has been a treat.

Wish you would decorate the house for Christmas with all Christmas lights around those columns in the front of the house. It would look so beautiful.

That would require a lot of unnecessary power off grid. Maybe LEDs

Hello a person of all our dreams at least most of us. How's the outside kitchen going are you finish or at least protected from the elements? As for the cabin it is truly beautiful. Your a person who learns from each of your builds. Continue congratulations. A man for all seasons.

Such a great job on the cabin and everything else you’ve put your hands to.👏 A little advice to you if I may? Separate the potatoes so they don’t touch each other. If they start to rot it will quickly spread to all that it touches. Also lay straw doesn’t mater what kind of straw down first then potatoes on top. This way it helps prevent moisture that could cause rot and makes it easier to clean up a mess if they start to rot. I wouldn’t put them up on the shelves if it was me instead I’d lay them on the floor on top of hay or straw of some kind. It will save you time and energy cleaning up a rotten smelly mess if on the floor instead of the shelves. Enjoy all the hard work of your labor for many years to come.

Sean this is the nicest cabin you’ve built. Such a beautiful cabin well worth the enormous time and labor spent building it. Thanks for including us again in the process.
