    Excellent. Every third day this summer is body weight strength day. Will include slower pushups starting tomorrow.

    Thanks so much for these tips. I do navy seal burpees regularly so I will definitely try your second tip. I'd like to try your tip with the kick out burpees but as I start to fatigue whenever I do them, I find that my knees start to bend as I kick in and it becomes more of a "squat in" so I don't do kick out burpees much. I should start practicing them more. Great suggestions and tips though. Thanks again!

    Well said, Lee! About 2 months ago, I struggled with 5 pushups done with proper form. I started "greasing the groove" by doing 5 pushups after every trip to the restroom while at home (I work from home). Now I can easily do 10 pushups with every trip to the can without failure and I could even see my triceps in the mirror the other day after a shower. If you had asked me a few months back, I would have sworn I didn't even have triceps! 😆

    Good video Lee man. I’m also a fan of the 3rd option you mentioned here. Adding pumps onto the already extremely challenging 22 count is a great way for packing on the upper body muscle. And who knew lifting weights could build muscle😂😂!

    Makes sense! I like the idea of using half your max for determining reps in the set. Also could you just do the classic burpee that doesn't include the push up and do push ups separately?

  • @jcstuart6978
    @jcstuart6978Ай бұрын

    I believe the burpee is complex enough to tell your body to release natural HGH and is a great muscle support calisthenic for pushing you over your plateaus in the gym. On its own? Not enough correct.But it does help with muscle growth in front delts, lats, chest, tri’s if added to a well developed gym routine.

    Good stuff Lee. One of my favorite ways to build the chest with pushups is to do it for 90 seconds : 10 seconds up 10 down 15 seconds up 15 down and 20 seconds up 20 down. 3 reps but 90 seconds time under tension. Love your emphasis on the push-up.

    Nice video, agree with all your advice 👍 Once you have got the basics right the next stage is to throw on a weight vest. I’ve started recently and have seen almost immediate muscle mass gains by adding about 20% of my body weight. I’ve been doing the very same burpee based (not exclusive, usually add in pull ups and squat variations) routines. Maybe a few less reps though if I’m honest 😉

    The eccentric phase of the pushup is where the money is at. Controlling that tension through the movement.

  • @skullknight2041

    Great video! For me personally I started burpees with a calisthenics athlete background so i was already able to do 40 strict pushups in a row. I believe the pushup, being submaximal weight, can have tremendous benefits when done at higher volume and close to failure, hence workouts that involve going from 1 pump all the way up to 5 pumps tend to be the best, but my conditioning is more often a limiting factor.

    Lot to digest here, i actually watched twice, lol. Some time back i messed around with mega slow burpees, like 20 or less unbroken in 20 minutes. It's definitely an interesting training modality, if not just a little exaggerated from what youre discussing... But in the same ballpark. Sometimes burpees get boring and I've got to find new ways of making them interesting again. Videos like this always lead me to finding horrible and torturous new ways of making burpees fresh again. Thanks Lee.

  • @StrongandConditioned

    @StrongandConditioned

    I would keep the push ups as is. A slow exaggerated burpee in that fashion is pointless as you’re better focusing on the push up exclusively in that manner

  • @PaulfromOregon

    @@StrongandConditioned i feel you, but also add this. If you do the burpee in a very squat centric manner like Sam Throssel does burpees and you slow that squat down your legs get absolutely cooked from the TUT. Shaking like a leaf. Regardless, i understand what you're saying and am gonna play with these suggestions you're making here.

  • @KosherPorky

    Slowing down on the eccentric and building that sort of tension will build muscle in the sense of hypertrophy, but doing it faster will likely still provide a stimulus for strength. Sort of like bodybuilders vs powerlifters. Bodybuilders are a lot more concious on the eccentric because of the hypertrophy based response. However, powerlifters are very aggressive with their lifts, and get extremely strong. So it really depends on the goal. Since you are focused on hypertrophy, this is good advice, but I should note it doesnt matter significantly for pure strength and conditioning. I also notice that the point on low vs high pump only applies to bodyweight. When doing weighted burpees, doing just strict 1 pump and 6cts have seen me make significant muscle growth alongside increased conditoning that 1 pumps are known for. In fact, weighted 1 pumps are the reason why I broke through stagnation. I went from 60 push ups in 2 minutes to 81 push ups in 2 minutes, maxing out the US Army's APFT.

    I actually know of one burpee variation that builds crazy muscle, you start the burpee, go down on the push up, explode up to a squat position, then explode back to the push up position and repeat it. It takes explosive strength to be able to do it though so until one can do it, I suggest getting to 50 single clap push ups non stop with full rom.

    So, why not do push ups for muscle building, and them burpees for cardio and other benefits it provides? To me, adding pumps beyond what comes with the standard Navy Seals end up turning into push ups (or push ups with mountain climbers) while occasionally standing up. 🤷‍♂️

    you are recomevding the hardest and least effiecient way possible to build muscle, the easiest and best way is to go to the gym and lift heavy, burpees will never be a good way for many reasons, but mianly because you will get exhausted before your muscles start to burn enough to build muscle, in the gym its the oppossite although squats are tiring and deadlifts, but nothg else ! and you build muscle quiker and easier
