Thank You. Brings a tear to my eye. America is not perfect, but we make our own destiny as Free Citizens. I and both my brothers volunteered to join the Army because we believe in our Great Nation, and believe in Freedom.

Immediately after Pearl Harbor, my 21 yr old father (to be) went to the recruiting center in Newark, NJ to enlist in the Army, but there so many young men trying to do the same thing at that time, that the Recruiters actually told them to go home and come back in 30 days. My father grabbed several of his friends and for 30 days, they went on an epic adventure down to Key West, came back, signed up in the different branches and off they went. Some of his friends never returned. I was born almost 21 years after Pearl Harbor and did my own stint in the Army. Thank You Dad, you were my inspiration and motivation. RIP.

Approx 18 yrs of my 20 yr USN career was spent homeported and stationed in Pearl. Retired in '99 and served sea duty aboard 2 frigates and did 3 tours at training command on Ford Island. Pearl was a big part of my life. The bldg. I worked at on Ford Island was right next to the PBY ramp. You could walk out to the ramp and still see bullet holes in the concrete. There were a few old hangers still there then. Some of the window panes still shot out. At the Ford Island dispensary, as you walked through the entrance tunnel into the courtyard, there was a little brass plaque in the ground indicating where a Japanese bomb had dropped but not exploded. I loved being stationed there and being surrounded by the history of such an important event. God Bless all those Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who were there that day.

Never forget that 12.7.41. Forged a U.S Military into one bigass fighting force. Regardless of your branch of service. We're ALL AMERICA AND WE'RE ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHEN WE'RE ATTACKED. THE ENEMY MIGHT AS WELL PREPARE TO GET THEIR ASSSES HANDED TO THEM! BECAUSE THE MARINES ARE GONNA FIGHT SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH THE ARMY. THE AIR FORCE IS GOING TO GIVE AIR SUPPORT, AND THE NAVY IS GOING TO GET US THERE. THEN TO THE SUPRISE TO THE ENEMIES, ALL BRANCHES OF SERVICES IN THE UNITED STATES CAN DO THE SAME DAMN THING AND THEY'RE ALL BADASS!😂🤙👍😁🇺🇸

My father in law joined the Navy on 12/8/41 he was 16. By early 1942 he was a torpedo man in the destroyer escort fleet doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic. He made 37 trips through the canal seeing Naval combat in both the Atlantic & Pacific theaters. I feel truly fortunate to have heard both his stories first hand as well as those of my brothers father in law (USMC WWII). We miss you Brownie & Norm. Many in our family have served WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!

In December of 2019, me and my family visited Pearl Harbor. At first, I was my usual self: giddy about the old military hardware and talkative as ever, but once we were sat down in the theater and were watching the introductory film about the attack, once we had boarded the boat to the memorial, and once I was standing in front of all those names, I couldn't bring myself to say a damned word. The power of that place upon even a young boy's mind is indescribable. I'll never forget Pearl harbor, I'll never forget any sacrifice made that has allowed me to live in this country, free. Ever since then, I've deeply considered joining the Marine Corps, even now as some... controversies have popped up. I owe it all to those young men. God bless their souls, God bless all of you, God bless America.

Thank yall for putting this out, i wasn’t there, but it is not hard to tell even looking around at the evidence left of it to this day, that was a completely different time in America, and people had a completely different mentality in America back then. So many aspects of the way our grandparents lived, conducted themselves, and not only accomplished, but the way they went about accomplishing it through blood sweat and tears literally, i so long for us to get back to those no bullshit mentalities that ruled the roost back then. The world would be a far less confusing place.

@amandavaldez2462 you cannot possibly be serious? I was born in 1982, as a Xenial, I have perspective of both Gen X and Millennials, and Millennials are NOT even close to being the Greatest Generation. They did far more with WAY less than we ever will. They built great, amazing things without computers, plastics, or modern machinery. They transformed the landscape, and fought wars people these days literally can't even imagine, and they didn't have cell phones, the internet, email or even fax. Trains were still the primary mode of transportation, and those incredible locomotives, and aircraft, were designed, drafted and built without calculators, CAD/CAM, or computer modeling. Many of the things they built not only are still around, but functions exactly, or nearly so, as they did when first built, yet we cannot figure out why our roads crumble, vehicles fall apart after just a few years, our power grid is a joke, and out water infrastructure hasn't seen much improvement since the 1970's. So, really, tell us all just HOW you can possibly think that Millennials are the greatest Generation?

I was stationed in Yokosuka. The base out there used to be one of the major shipyards during WWII and a lot of ships stationed there were sent to attack Pearl Harbor such as Hiryū and Shōkaku. If you walk around base, you can see the old structures with plaques tell you what they were used for. The drydocks out there are well over 100 years old and the navy still uses them. Interestingly enough there is a JMSDF base directly across from Fleet Activities Yokosuka.

The memorial they are at spans the USS Arizona (BB-39). Her hull lays where she sank on 7 December 1941. An armor-piercing bomb punched through her deck around the #2 turret. It set off in one of the magazines causing a daisy-chain effect that spilled over to other magazines. This caused the entire forward third of the ship to erupt into a ball of flame, perhaps the most used footage of the Pearl Harbor attack is Arizona's demise. It was taken by a US Army doctor, Eric Haakenson, from the deck of the hospital ship USS Solace. What's amazing about this is, there are men in that fireball that survived. Six of them belonged to the portside anti-aircraft gun director, this includes Donald Stratton and Lauren Bruner. They and four other men abandoned their blazing post and went to the main deck on the portside. Moored alongside the Arizona that day was the repair ship Vestal (AR-4). The survivors saw a Vestal sailor and hailed him. The Vestal sailor threw them a heaving line. It took several tries, but they did secure it to the Arizona's railing. A Vestal officer ordered the line be cut so they can get away from the blazing battleship. The sailor refused to obey. One after the other the six men, all of them badly burned over most of their bodies, climbed over. Only when the last one came over was the line cut. Two of the six would die that evening of their wounds. Men like Stratton and Bruner not only survived, but they also continued to serve in the Navy through the rest of the war. Bruner passed away in 2019. Stratton in 2020. That Vestal sailor was later identified as Petty Officer First Class Joseph (Joe) George. Only once did George speak of his actions that day to his daughter. It wasn't until 7 December 2017 that George received his belated Bronze Star Medal with V device for valor. It was Stratton and Bruner who campaigned to have this award bestowed on the man who refused to obey an order and saved their lives. While George did get his Bronze Star, both Bruner and Stratton believed he deserved more.
