I knew Canley and Gonzales, serving with them at the battle of Hue City in Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Division. John Canley was our Gunnery Sergeant at the time. I say this without any exaggeration, he was the bravest and calmest man I have ever seen in battle. When we were pinned down prone under fire, he would be standing up walking slowly behind us saying things like, "Be calm Marines" while bullets were flying all around him. Our company truly loved this man. We will always remember him with great respect, a very kind soul

I was in country at the same time as the Sargent Major. I served with such men and was fortunate to be in their company. The most valuable lesson I learned was to take care of my people. “My People” That can be your family, your company, your classroom or any and all you have accepted the responsibility for. No exceptions. I don’t know if Harvard Business School has a class in My People, but the Sargent Major taught one to every Marine in his care.
