    Bohnanza is definitely a game that plays better than it looks or than the concept suggests (for anyone unsure whether or not to get it). It was only watching this for the second time that I realised how the "harvest any time" rule isn't overpowered, as long as you remember the (One) Bean Protection rule. It's a pain of a game to teach, but Dave did a good job teaching it, considering how tricky it can be for newcomers with its multiple phases and little details.

    So let me get this straight. You bought a game overseas that is /was readily available in any number of places including Wal-Mart, ebay, amazon, bgg marketplace. It is a multi-player game but your wife won't play with you (and neither will your game group?). You never went online to look for the rulebook, even a pdf is available in at least two places. And now you are using a play-through as your rulebook?

    I love this game and started with the Rio Grande edition. However, I've found over time there is some tendency for confusion because there are some recommended variations for different numbers of players that I don't always remember. For example, in the two player game, you draw only TWO cards at the end of a turn, rather than three. And with larger numbers of players you might remove some of the bean cards from the deck. I started out playing with two players and didn't realize when then playing with three players that we should have been drawing three cards at the end of a turn instead of two. Some of the variations may be just recommendations, but there are good reasons for them-- they streamline the game a bit. I did a 5 player game recently, and didn't remove the Coffee beans as is suggested, and consequently the game ran rather long. And that was counter-intuitive, because I figured with more players you'd want more cards, but that's not necessarily the case. In any event, the game isn't completely broken if you get these rules variations wrong, so it's not too big of a deal, but they are useful variations even if a bit hard to remember. The other good thing about this game is it's a good travel game, the fact it plays from 2-7 is a big plus. My copy is starting to show wear from playing it so much, I'll probably be buying another copy soon... Also, we pretty much always buy the third bean field. However, we've not done a lot of analysis on it's true benefit. In our case, the added flexibility seemed like enough advantage so everyone always does it, so if there's a benefit to NOT buying the third field, we've not had the occasion to notice. YMMV.

    I had that same situation where they needed to draw 2 cards for the trade phase and there wasn't any there. In the rules it said if that occurs you finish the Phase 2:trade and then end on Phase 3:redraw at of your turn. Though my copy is from 2001 so the rules might have been updated.

  • @JorWat25

    Seven years on, here's what the most recent version of the rules (as found the 25th Anniversary Edition) say: "The game ends when the draw pile runs out for the third time. If this happens during phase 2, “Trading Bean Cards”, complete phases 2 and 3 of your turn (even if you could only turn over one card instead of two), then the game ends." Which I think is what you're saying anyway.

  • @davebo3428

    Nope. What probably happened is the person teaching you messed up the rule that stated you can't harvest a field with only one card in it if you have another field with multiple cards in it. But, as far as I understand, all of these are legit: I have 3 Stink Beans and 4 Green Beans - I can harvest either. I have 1 Stink Bean and 1 Green Bean - I can harvest either. I have 1 Stink Bean and 2 Green Beans - I can harvest Green Beans, and then Stink Bean.

    I believe your not allowed to just openly trade out of your hand, meaning the two cards drawn have to be involved in the trades you cannot just trade random cards from the hand.

  • @davidarnott6085

    @davidarnott6085

    9 жыл бұрын

    max mueller Max, you absolutely can just trade cards from your hand. Trades can involve ANY cards, not just the two flipped over. And can be made in ANY order. The only two restrictions are: 1. All trades MUST involve the active player, so two other players cannot trade with each other on my turn, for example, and... 2. Once a card is traded, it is set aside to be planted at the end of the trading phase and CANNOT be traded again. So I can't acquire a bean from, say, Nikki, and then turn it around by trading Nikki's bean with Lincoln. Heh, it's essentially reinforcing point #1, if you think about it :)

    Not a huge fan of this game....pretty luck dependent on what cards come up and then it's ALL about trading with other people. Little to no decisions to make other than, please trade me this for this and this...and if that doesn't happen then you're screwed and you probably have to start over on a new field and the luck of what comes up happens again and then it's all dependent on if people will trade you what you want. Meh, I can play it a couple times a year but more than that is just not really that good.

    I recently played this game and I had a few issues with this game: - I had a hard time to understand what to do (my first time). - This is very luck oriented. I fail to see where the strategy is. - The winner is probably the one with the biggest mouth as he is the one who get the best "deals". - The drawing is too childish. - One player was a hardcore player... and too strict. If you didn't put the card in the back in perfect order, he will scream like a 3 years old kid. And that's my 1-2h experience of that game. Not as fun as I wished. Didn't like it. Pass. But thanks for the video explaining how to play.
