I have a box that comes with me to conventions, it is exactly the right size for a shoulder bag. Inside are stone cold classics you can break out anywhere. Bohnanza, Love Letter, For Sale, Botswana, No Thanks, Citadels, and Archaeology the Card Game. So yeah, Bohnanza is awesome and everyone who has 3+ gamer friends needs a copy.

Bohnanza is one of the best card games! It even plays up to 7 and well. Everybody is interacting the entire time even if it isn't your turn. And then recommending Lords of Vegas as a next step game is amazing. It might be my #1 game of all time just for pure fun with an amazing catch up mechanism. It's just SO good!

My First Bohnanza is horribly underrated, giving my children as young as 3-y.o. their first chance at negotiation. There are cards in the game that can be added in over time to approach the diversity and complexity of the base game.

High Bohn (or High Bohn Plus) is an interesting expansion with buildings you can buy to give special powers. Bohn to be Wild is a fun spin-off with all different beans, a few extra rules and special powers on the beans which allow 2 bean types to be played in the same field, skipping a phase of your turn, drawing extra cards and things like that.

Good video! One similar game I'm surprised you never brought up is Pit. That's a classic that has people yelling for card trades as well. I think your tip for shortening the game is a good one. I have found it drags on a bit as well. But my primary issue with the game is that "negotiation" is one of those game mechanics that can quickly transcend the "game space" and start interacting with real life drama/politics. Are you a little annoyed by person 1? Well, no beans for you. Does your partner look sad over there? How about making an especially good deal with them. Everyone is begging for a deal, and when all is said and done, the way it played out can leave you feeling a little ruffled afterwards. With that said, I do think the game is fantastic, and my sister-in-law, who rarely wants to play games at all, LOVES "the bean game." It's her #1 choice. Too bad there aren't any other new negotiation games to expand her horizons with!

It's frankly shocking that in spite of Monopoly and Catan being massively successful there's been practically no games released in the last twenty years that center around trading cards between players to collect the sets you need.

I love this game, and I love the artwork too. My strategy is always to collect wax or coffee beans, as everyone is always trying to grow garden or cocoa beans, and are desperate to get rid of their worthless cards. But I never knew the original game didn't have them! Will have to try a round without them.

Bohnanza is one of the favorite games of our board game group. It's a classic and we always have a great time playing it. We've introduced it to a ton of other people who all have enjoyed it. The social interaction is fun and it can be as friendly or as cut-throat as you want it to be. :) I agree that the game could use a serious art update. I honestly think it would help sales a ton as well because the ugly yellow box and had art are a real turn-off for many.

Hello, about que "looks" of the game I would recommend procuring the version made by a fellow who goes by the alias of Carthaginian (if I'm not mistaken), I believe you could find the files on BGG, it's still beans but with a more modern look and if you want something really special try the retheme by Beth Sobel with flowers instead of beans, great art in the herbaceous style. It doesn't hurt to mention that I believe one should only use these versions if already has the original version, but it is merely my opinion. On the topic of expansions and spin offs I can't recommend enough the Duel version. It's awesome, everybody I played with liked it better than the original, as a game, mechanic-wise I mean, obviously the original has that whole "group dynamic" thing that can add a lot of fun, but also sink the game. Well, thank you for the awesome video as per usual, all the best.

Great and informative video! I can also recommend the two player version of Bohnanza "Das Duell" ("The Duel"). While when playing Catan with 2 players, trading doesn't make much sense, "The Duel" adds bonus cards that award coins and "bohnus points" for having a specific order of cards on either players field. It adds an incentive for trading your opponent cards he wants, so that you can fulfill a bonus or let's you use a, from your opponents pov, "dummy" card traded to you. (You also have three fields by default, allowing for more flexibility). In my experience, while the fixed card order and the forced cards you have to plant/trade in the trading phase make it seem like a game heavily relying on luck, but just like the box and the video describes, it comes down much more to strategizing the order in which to play and what to trade than to pure luck. Most of the lost games I can track back to some misplay earlier in the game, like holding on to long. Thanks again for the video!

There are 8 characters all with different abilities, You try build the most valuable city. every round you choose a character and try to make use if its abilities to grow your city. You absolutely do not need any Bohnanza expansions. I've picked up a couple at trades or flea market type sales at gaming conventions. At best, they add a little flavor to a game that doesn't need it. At worst, they ruin the experience by over complicating it. If you want to do a video on classics, you may want to look at Acquire and I'm the Boss. They are two games I recommend to people who think Monopoly is fun. Acquire is for the hotel/stock collecting fans. I'm the Boss is for the wheeling and dealing. Both games were made by Sid Sackson thirty(!) years apart. 1964 for Acquire and 1994 for I'm the Boss (originally title Kohle, Kiese, and Knete).

I think negotiation games are scarce because they put a player's fate in the hands of others. I'm really surprised this game is still being played, so it must be fun for some people. I don't mind playing it, so that makes it better than Uno at least (IMO).

Bit confused how you put coins aside. Does a set of 4 mean you have 4 coins, or a set of 4 means you have 1 coin?

My family doesn't really like trading games. We play the variant listed in the rule book where you offer two cards to the next player, rather than trading. This makes it more of a hand management game and we have found that more non-gamers are willing to play this version. We'd bring this to raves and house-parties where it fit the non-sober audience better than the trading version.

Wait, what??? In the last 20 years, there hasn't been a single game that utilizes trading cards that's worth mentioning? I find that hard to believe.

100% correct about the look of this game holding it back. I’ve seen or read dozens of glowing reviews and think I’d adore the trading, but I never buy it because I can’t ever picture myself pulling a game this ugly out and showing it to people. I suspect a publisher could make suitcases of money with a gorgeous new edition.

I think this is your best video in a while. Really like this "looking at a classic game" bit. Would have liked to hear a little bit more about the game's history (one of the other commenters says the rules have changed more than once?), but otherwise great. Didn't know Uwe was a statistician! Been thinking about trying Bohnanza for a while but have been put off by the art. Might grab a copy now!

Not gonna lie, I like trading and auction games. Guess I'm just fascinated by auctions after spending enough time on them in MMOs. Can I ask for a possible topic for a future video? I, personally, do love cards as a component, but my dad hates cards as a whole with passion(and, admittedly, a lot of us got into trouble at school for playing MtG/YGO/Pokémon TCG or similar things, so, I feel safe to say cards are still a bit stigmatized as a gambling symbol), so, is it possible to get a list of beginner-friendly games that don't utilise cards? Because I'm afraid my knowledge on the subject is limited to Carcassonne and Azul(also roll-and-writes such as Railroad Ink, but these are a terrible entry to the hobby where you INTERACT WITH PEOPLE), and I refuse to believe it really is all that exists for my specific needs.

Pretty sure it's only two 😬 As for the third field, I just didn't feel the need to mention it but I do play with it.

My first Bohnanza is indeed excellent. I always enjoyed High Bohn Plus (the plus part mainly). I thought the order cards were a really interesting addition that encourages you to sell or hold onto bean Fields longer or shorter than you might normally. Mixes it up a bit. The dice version is excellent as well, but the art is problematic unfortunately. Fantastic series whose expansions never really managed to capture the lightning in the bottle that the original release did.

To me, Bohnanza looks great (but not beautiful), and Sushi Go looks ugly. Huge difference in how nice it feels to have them on my table. (and an even bigger difference in how interesting they play, to Bohnanza's advantage) And I like your videos a lot, Jon.
