The voicemail in the beginning is actually from the singers mom, he suffers from bi-polar, it's also his mom at the end of the video If you've ever suffered from depression or addiction, you've got some pretty weird and screwed up memories, hence the line of making a porno feel like home Most with depression have tried to take their life at least once, including me The ending is a metaphor for burying his past

Lead singer, Justin Furstenfeld, does amazing story time acoustic sessions. He states that he penned "Hate Me" after a breakup early in his career when he caught this "I'm Justin mf'in Furstenfeld" attitude. Those performances give you a very insightful and intimate look into the mind of an amazing, yet sometimes tortured, artist and lyricist. Another amazing song ,"The Worry List", I always recommend parents fight over custody etc. listen to. I'd love to see a reaction to it.

The message his mom left on the machine is just another reminder of how she was always there for him no matter how dark things got and how she neglected her needs because of it. He cannot deal with the guilt knowing that his actions in the heat of addiction and mental health struggles prevented her from focusing on her own needs, her own happiness and her own health and wellness.

This song is about the end of his relationship with a girl while he was struggling with mental health and alcohol issues. So he wanted to set her free, hence Hate Me Today, so she could move on from the mess his life was at the time. It is also viewed as a sequel to “Calling You” which was written about the same girl.

There is another song that is like that. This song is about wanting his Mother to hate him in so that she doesn't worry about him anymore. There are interviews of the lyrical meaning. I mean if there is something you can show me otherwise, I might understand, but for all the years I have listened that was the concept. My Mom passed this Feb., and my brother, a former addict sang it at the funeral. He changed some lyrics given we were with her church family and the end of lyrics to "love me today, etc." It ended up very beautiful and showed how our Mom supported him without enabling him. This song is so very honest.

You can feel the joy, sadness, anger all radiating out of him through his words-especially on stage! If you’re not won over yet I suggest a live concert! They leave you breathless! He was deep into drugs when their popularity skyrocketed with this song. Luckily he has come out on the other side a humble, honest, and loving father/husband/son/brother/band mate. Especially if you're in a cover band now, or ever were at any time in your entire life. (Which I was.) Some drunk fool *ALWAYS* yells "play Freebird!" Or "FREEBIRD!!!" Always at the top of their drunk as a skunk lungs, too. One of the most hated songs of any cover band. Ever. There's actually a list many cover bands have of *ALL* the songs they won't play because they're sick of playing them. Pretty sure "Freebird" is #1 on the "we really hate covering this song, so never request it" song list. Along with songs like "Mustang Sally".

The narrative in the video about his mother was something the music video director came up with. The song was actually about the lead singers fractured relationship with his girlfriend due to his drug addiction and depression. The voicemail at the beginning is an actual voicemail message from his mother, and his mother played herself in the video.

This is an apology song for the pain his mental/addiction problems caused those that loved him and he wished they would hate him so he couldn't hurt tgem anymore. His first albums are very, very dark and have a lot of violent, crazy, lyrics, but the music is amazing. Every Blue October album is vastly different and the most recent album is very happy/healthy, he's married and has good relationship with family and his kids. I would suggest "Fear" "Home" and my personal favorite, "For my brother"

The cockroach simile to me means this. Anyone who’s hurt another person knows we lay in bed thinking about all the mistakes we’ve made, the mistreatments we’ve done, and the pain we’ve inflicted. You don’t want to be reminiscing on those things in your bed because they disgust you, just like cockroaches in your bed would disgust you. It’s basically saying “I disgust myself for the things I’ve done” The line “makes a porno feel like home” also carries this sort of meaning. Think of laying in your living room watching a porno and a guest arrives, how would that make you feel? Would you feel comfortable and at home? The line is saying I would feel more comfortable watching a porno with a priest or nun or a parent or anyone who one would feel awkward doing that with than be sitting here thinking of my past mistakes and how much I’ve hurt you. When we have self destructive tendencies and we are aware of them and we feel disgusting and we hate ourselves, it is so hard to accept love (especially from a parent because they usually love us unconditionally) love when all we do is destroy ourselves and the people around us just makes us feel more disgusted with ourselves so the song as a whole is saying it would be easier for me if you would just hate me and forget about me. I am a lost cause. I am broken and I cannot be changed or fixed. Stop trying to help me and help yourself by hating me and leaving me in your past so you can have the happiness you deserve instead of all this pain and suffering I bring you. Listen to “Bleed Out” by Blue October it’s essentially the contrast of this song and from the perspective of the person being hurt while this one is from the perspective of the pain inflictor.

Can you do "Cleaning this Gun" by Rodney Atkins? Or maybe "Drinking Class" or "One of them girls" by Lee Brice?

I remember hearing this song forever ago and loving it but now I only listen to this performance of it whenever I want to hear it again, glad you’re reacting to it! Edit: Nevermind, I guess you’re not watching the video you used for the thumbnail...
