He wrote this as an apology to the people in his life that suffered while he struggled with addiction. His Mom is still alive but unfortunately his Father just passed away from cancer just before Christmas. This band is amazing. So many relatable songs. 3 years ago I committed suicide after battling 10 years of crinic pain. I found this band right after being released from the hospital....Drs brought me back but ultimately this band saved my life

I just want to say PLEASE don’t stop fighting! I also suffer from chronic pain, and there is a real war going on against chronic pain patients. Our plight is being swept under the rug and we are made to suffer because of the absolutely inhumane restrictions the CDC and DEA have placed on the medications that help us. Addiction and medical dependence are NOT the same thing. Opioids SAVED my life, and when used correctly and responsibly, they save millions of other lives as well. Please keep fighting, my friend! #Dontpunishpain #WearePatientsNOTaddicts #CorrectuseisNOTabuse #PainWarriors

Blue october is a Texas band with the most loyal followers you will ever meet. The lead singer Justin started the band with his brother (drummer) as a coping mechanism for Justin's mental illess. Their discography puts Justins ups and downs with life including mental illness, drug addiction, divorce, a nasty custody battle, and now finally a happy, clean marriage and drug free life. I first saw them as an opening act in a free concert in a park at Austin, Texas before they even had an album released. If there is ANY band that tells such an amazing story through all their albums that is worth giving the time to listen to each song one by one, it is Blue October. You wont regret it.

I love the fact that he's a walking, talking success story. Yes, he went down the drug path and was very suicidal for a long time. But he cleaned up his life and I love watching a beautiful transformation in a person. He doesn't know that there's strangers out there that are proud of him! Great reaction guys!!

I'm in my early thirties. I attended a Blue October show in 2011 and at the time, I was in such a great headspace. I remember during the show telling my friend that so many people there were yelling the lyrics back and seemed broke. I saw them in November 2021 and I was there, yelling the lyrics back as well. I love the message Justin pushes and how he genuinely pours his heart and soul into his lyrics and vocals - it's cathartic and a source of strength for me

You should watch an interview with justin that's here on you tube....he suffers from bi polar and anxiety and when his bands 3rd album came out and they finally found some success he started diving into drugs and alcohol. At that time he lived in dallas and was dating a girl named Amy who constantly tried to help him but instead he broke up with her and moved to LA. While there he finally began to clean up his life and wrote this song about her, later his mom called "the answering machine message" and he decided the song should be more about everyone he affected and incorporated the message into the song.....and that's his real mom in the video lying over him at the bottom of stairs and at the very end of the video

Start from the beginning, this band was made as a therapy for the lead singer Justin, the albums are literally his life from the day he committed himself one october all the way up to today where he is a happy drug free loving father in a healthy marriage. I won't spoil it but the path to get there could be a movie.

Justin (the vocalist) once set up a booth at one of their shows. Kind of like a confession booth. But he invited people to speak with him (anonymously, of course) and talk to him about their problems or anything going on in their life. It's impossible for me not to cry EVERY time I listen to this song. Having attempted to take my own life a few times, I understand what it's like to be on the edge. Check out their song, "Black Orchid."

My wife of 30 years this past October absolutely loves this band! Listens to them morning, noon, and night. She knows how stubbornly set in my ways I am about my music being an old classic rocker who grew up attending concerts of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd(before the crash), Allman Brothers Band, The Eagles, Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, Ted Nugent(in his mid-70's prime), Johnny Winter, Alvin Lee(saw him with & without Ten Years After) etc....., and I've also always loved the likes of Merle Haggard, Bocephus(Hank, Jr.), Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe, the late John Prine, and my lady with the voice of an angel Emmylou Harris. Needless to say, getting me to listen to something new is like pulling teeth, LOL. But she persisted and I'm so glad she did. My Mrs. is the absolute best. Still gorgeous, looks half her age and gets hit on by guys in their 30's all the time when we're out in stores. I take it as a compliment, as I did her persistence in my listening to Blue October.

When you follow their music from the early years of their writing to the current, you can literally see the stuff going on in their life. It's crazy how painful but their music has helped so many going through so much. Myself included. I was constantly listening them when I was going through a violent divorce. Will always celebrate their art. Too deep!

The grave and answering machine actually represent him burying his demons. His fight with drug addiction mainly. The song is mostly an apology to his mom and ex, for putting them through pain due to his addiction and whatnot. And don't worry, his mom is not dead, and from what I've heard that is actually her in the video. Regardless they have a good relationship. I love this song, and am always excited when somebody discovers it for the first time. I can't help but sing along with it, and additionally crying as it always happens. I can feel the emotion from the lyrics so strongly, and I've always been sensitive to emotions and am extremely empathetic. It always odd feeling like an emotionless wall and a brute of a person, but then getting all teary eyed and shakey when a song like this comes on. Anyway, loved the video. Thank you for the fun.
