I purchased a titled Mustang last month at a horse auction in TN. She was titled in December 2022 and by April was already in a kill pen in TX. She’s a gorgeous Strawberry roan and has come so far in the short time I’ve had her. It’s heartbreaking to know how many end up in the slaughter pipeline once the $1000 has been paid. I’ve tried to get info on her from the BLM but they don’t respond to my emails. The first two numbers of her registration don’t match any number on their website. I guess once they are titled, the BLM doesn’t feel obligated to respond to inquiries. Thank you for making this video and for caring about the Mustangs. I think raising public awareness is so important as I was unaware of any of this-BLM and roundups, kill pens and slaughter pipeline, etc.-until 2 years ago!! I really thought mustangs just roamed the west wild, beautiful, and free. Man, was I naive.

The BLM is just usually very slow to respond..Like any other organization they are overwhelmed.

The two that were sleeping came from our facility in Nc and they were exposed to lots of teen girls so they are very tame. 4619 is Bullseye and 4877 was Salsa now known as Destrier with his adopter! 4979 was chimichanga and he went to a great home

I am not American, but as a horse lover (and generally an animal lover) I was vaguely aware of the mustang programme. Your video was sensitively done and very informative, and I think it is positive as a whole, (and certainly gives many horses another opportunity, versus culling which occurs in other places). I’ve now also watched several of your training videos and admire your patience and dedication to your horses, and I’m sure your heart breaks when moving them on to their permanent homes. I’ve great respect for your approach and effort, and try to use your methods, but probably not as patiently as you. Wonderful effort and I hope you continue this good work. Wishing you all the best.

If I may... Let's see if I can tell my story... actually "Calypso's story without absolutely loosing it.... My name is Don Galloway and I'm almost 66 years old... I live about 20 miles south of Houston Tx on a couple acres of land... I grew up in the heart of Amish country in Northern Indiana, and have been around horses off and on for most of my life... I'm a 100% Service Connected Disabled Vet on full disability... a few years ago my now 24 yo daughter was abled to get "Calypso"... We received her from my Son, as they were moving from Arkansas to Baton Rouge La. and could not take her with them... Calypso was a 15 year old BLM Wild Capture Mustang Mare... Her official color was Flea Bit Gray, but for the most part was white with quarter size faded dark spots under her coat... She was maybe 14-1/2 hands, and around 1,000 lbs... She was absolutely the single most amazing animal I have ever had the honor of owning... We believe we were her 3rd owner... There are records of her online, but I haven't researched them fully yet... In the last 5 years... I have been diagnosed with 5 separate cancers... 3 in the last year... and #5 as we speak right now... Calypso has kept me alive during some of the darkest times of my life... as she did with my daughter... and a couple other young people who have had struggles... I live in a semi-rural area, and all my neighbors knew her well and would even go as far as tying her up on their properties, to help with weed control..LoL... She was Bare back trained... Saddle trained, and halter trained... and absolutely loved carrots... and would give you snuggles for said carrots... She loved apples also... but when you pulled your hand back from feeding her an apple... you were guaranteed to have the slimiest hand you have ever had... Now as you are reading this... you may have noticed that I am talking about Calypso in "Past Tense"... Here's the sad part to this story... On Tuesday May 9th just before 7am in the morning Calypso had broken free from where she was tide off on a 30 ft lead... Not unusual as she was a Mustang... and would get loose on a regular basis... but always staying within eye shot of our property, mostly going to the neighbors for the sweet grass in their yards... and always coming back home when called... Everyone knew this, even the local PD, although I am outside of city limits... the local Law Enforcement would cruise down our roads, just keeping an eye on things... and they all knew her... Unbeknownst to me sometime before 7am she not only got loose... but for reasons we still can not answer she traveled close to a mile down a couple of roads, and out onto a local 2-lane hwy... Now comes the part that still doesn't add up, and a part that the local PD even question... Just prior to 7am, in heavy morning rush our traffic, and individual hit Calypso with such speed and force that she was knocked 75-80 ft across the road and onto the berm on the other side... I arrived on scene shortly after the incident happened, and upon seeing her laying there and in un-imaginable pain...I threw myself on top of her, and absolutely went hysterical, holding her. Loving on her, and just devastated on a level that there are no words for... After a short while I asked the officer on scene if I could end her suffering... He informed me that he would have to contact a supervisor, but a Ft Bend County Livestock Deputy was in Route... The Deputy knew me, and Calypso, and we knew him, so I opted to wait for his arrival... 30-45 minutes later, the whole time I'm on the ground, holding her, and loving on her, and yes.. bawling like I have never bawled before... When the Deputy showed up, Upon asking him if I could put her down... he informed me that she was in fact my horse, and I was allowed to do as I deemed necessary. During the time leading up to this, each officer from the local PD who were on scene, all came up to me, and laid their hands on me, telling me how sorry they were, and how much they understood what I was feeling... They protected Calypso and I during this entire situation, Blocking us from rush hour commuter traffic... When it came time to end her suffering, The Deputy offered to do it for me, but I thanked him... told him this was not only something "I had to do".. But I had already told Calypso, that I would do it, and had already expressed to her just how sorry i was for what I was going to do next... Me knowing this was not something the commuters needed to see... I asked all the officers if they would mind taking their patrol vehicles and making a barrier if you will, around us, which they willingly did... At that time... I did the single hardest thing I have ever done in my entire life, and I ended my sweet Calypso's suffering... I know people are just being "normal"... in this day and age, But I also know there are at least a couple video's floating around out there of the situation... And that is what it is. Now the next battle... once I did what needed to be done Law Enforcement stayed with her so I could run home and get a large trailer I owned with a winch on it... I covered her with a tarp, and loaded her onto my trailer, then completely covered her up. At this point I truly didn't know what to do with her... The Deputy informed me that the Local dump... would take her, for a fee, and bury her... B.S!!!! Not my Mustang... She deserved better then that!!! I called Texas A & M Equine Center, who had actually worked on her before with a laceration from fencing... Upon Talking to her original Dr... I asked if we could donate her remains to their Vet training facilities!!! Dr. Major's was blown away by my offer.. and was beyond honored to receive her... So I called my Daughter, picked her up from work, and for the next 3 hours we drove and bawled our way to Texas A & M Equine Center in College Station Texas... Where she was donated... Just the other day we received a long braid of her tail hair... We also received a hoof impression which they had sent to the art department, which was painted on one side with her imprint, and a painting of her on the other side... It's coming up on a month now... and we're still not over it... I'm dealing with cancer #5 knowing she won't be there to bring me through the tough days... A dozen times a day i look outside for her... just knowing it's been a nightmare, and I'll wake up to see her standing there, expecting her carrots... Funny... no matter where she was, when I opened my door, she was hollering at me... telling me... hey!!! Fat man!!! I'm over here!!! Carrot's... NOW!!! I will admit, that after watching your video... there were more tears... and an unbelievable urge to load up... and go get another one... Those who don't know... won't understand... And I get that!!! I take comfort in knowing... those that do know!!! Yeah... right now... their eye's are most likely leaking too!!!! God Bless you for sharing your love of Mustangs!!! As Great as Horses are... in my opinion... Mustangs are the bar which all the others have to strive for!!! Thank you...

I worked as a horse trainer for years before I had the opportunity to work with mustangs. I was STUNNED by how easy they are to work with! If you are an experienced trainer, these ponies are worth a try. With patience, veterinary, farrier care, they are great! In Maryland, they were some of the best hunter trial ponies around!

I just wanted to say that you don't have to be an experienced horse trainer to gently these Mustang's, maybe not all of them. My boy was so willing he let me do just about everything after the first month I got him in March from the internet adoption I sat in his round pen for hours just to get to know him, he was so easy to teach to lead backup pick up all four feet my ferrier jumped right in on trimming him he did wonderful. These horses I must say are so willing I believe it's because they aren't wrecked in training and being passed from owner to owner. I have an Arabian he is so spooky,, so glad the Mustang didn't pick that up from him. My Mustang loves kids dogs just about everything he is the first one to the gate even with a stranger. I could go on and on about the Mustang. Utube videos have helped me along the way.

I attended and adopted my first mustang! Glad you got the videos of what went on as I was in a whirlwind of emotions and barley took pictures. Thank you for sharing!

Very nice video❤ there is nothing better then rideing a mustang. My favorite horse was a strawberry roan gelding i adopted from the south steins hma . There is alot of draft blood in those horses they cover the ground with grace and strengthhamd an endurance that is unmatched . My pecos Bill is old and retired now as am i but what i wouldnt give for another like him.❤❤

@@TheProjectEquestrian Beatty NV is famous for its friendly wild burros. Pahrump and Silver Springs has herds of wild horses that come into town sometimes. I've seen them from Hwy 95 and 50.

The horse that let you briefly touch him heard how soft and non threatening your voice was to him !! I believe horses know when good humans are around !! And geez how to pick just one ???? when right away I want like five lol. Thanks for the vid !!! ❤️🐴

I am so impressed by the handler. She reads and sort the horses so softly and with as little stress as she can! I am both blessed and damned not to live in the US - if I did, I would have a hard time leaving anyone of these beautiful horses behind. I'd be a hoarder :O

I believe advertising the horses are the most important and supporting farmers and ranchers

I don't understand the online auction format. We have THOUSANDS of these horses just sitting in corrals, the govt complains that they cost so much to feed, and yet they're only putting up a handful of them on the auction site. It honestly infuriates me. They need to get off their asses, run the adoptions more frequently, and be listing every single horse available at a certain location. I appreciate your videos! It's nice to see how things are done, and what animals are waiting at every adoption.

So very helpful. Very educational, well presented. Thank you for helping mustangs. I'm sure this video took a lot of work.

Aw, I remember the sorrel mare too! Nicknamed her Duchess... I fell in LOVE with that little bay yearling. There was one gelding that seemed like my heart horse on the internet auction, (sadly I don't live in the USA) and he still hasn't been adopted 😭 You saw him though! Tag 4856. From Ella, in the UK.

This is great info! God, I really hope Cheveyo and Choctaw are adopted together, if Choctaw is still alive. It'd be heartbreaking if not. They were rare co-stallions in a band they formed together and have been best friends since a young age. If Choctaw is still alive, they absolutely need one another.

My granddaughter would love one these but I’m not sure I could afford to feed. This video was well done!

Love the video I would love to adopt one but I have no room here. I would love to see some relocated to the Buffalo River National Park. There are thousands of acres and open fields where people once lived ( me being one) that would afford good grazing. Room for two or three 25 to 30 horse bands there probably wouldn't even be noticed. Would give more horses not adopted to have a place to live. Wonder who I could talk to about that. Thanks for sharing with us.

I'd totally grab 4877 because he laid down, especially flat out like that. Typically they will only lay down if they feel safe, so he was probably a bit more confident than the others Since when are they microchipped? I thought that was only Forest Service stangs?

Totally! He was quite comfortable! Yea, it’s a newish thing I think, where the blm has the brand and microchip. USFS still just has the chip.

Thank you for this video, and for showing this facility in the USA. Do you know if it would be possible to adopt animals as a herd? It hurts my heart to see horses and burros torn from their herd and I think I could only adopt them as a group. Are animals sold as groups, or would you have to bid on each individual?

They do it individually. It would probably really hard to do it as a group, as it’s common for herds to change as stallions loose and acquire mares. But some people do seek out horses they know where in the same herd and adopt them separately to bring back together

when will this happen cause i live in new hampshire and looking at adopting a mustang

I do realize you have to manage population on the open ranges. But recently I have become aware that when culling herds you round up mares with small foals. And if the foals are to young to keep up they are left behind to starve or die from predators. Please can a better way be found? I see a lot of mustangs going through the slaughter pipeline. Can you advocate for better treatment? There must be Alternatives to this. Thank you .

It can vary year to year, so you have to watch the blm website, but next year won’t be up for quite a while, I imagine

I wouldn’t recommend trying to transport them from another country, unless it’s by road.

I would like to adopt a wild mustang someday when I'm older and have more expiriance with horses, but I live in Canada so Idk how it would work :(

Anyone interested in Mustangs just a plus is they are easy keepers and also are very self preserving you qill not be going broke on vet bills.

I am a “cat person,” as you are truly a guardian of horses. I’m too old & decrepit now, but if I were smarter when I was younger, I would have had a few burros living here with me and the cats. This was a horse field, next to the main house, so I’ve got great built-in fertilized soil. Are there programs specifically for burro or mustang adoption specifically in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana? City reference would likely be Covington or Slidell. We’re across that big lake (Lake Pontchartrain) from New Orleans. I’m not leaving my property to any relatives-they consider me sub-human because I prefer cats to people ( I have only 3 now ) and because 1. I had federal government jobs and 2. I’m not a racist. I have never learned to ride but been rolled off in the dust & scraped off on a pine tree, all done very peacefully. I fell in love with the big circle eyed burros when I briefly lived up in north central New Mexico-I think it’s my “spirit home” somehow, but that was back in the 1975- 1980’s. I like to talk to horses, nose rubs, etc. and maybe there’s some way I could help by giving my land to some rescue operation when I pass- I’m 74 now but hope & expect to reach at least 90 or more. As I said, see what’s going on for me hereabouts. I’ve had Great Pyrenees, but each of the 2 I had got out and one disappeared and one got traumatized in a thunder storm. They had nothing to “herd” here & they will search until they come upon a herd. I don’t know when you’ll see this, but I must say I’m enjoying your videos and my bestest & longest time best friend (now in Houston) is a devotee of all things horse. At 77, she’s still taking lessons and going riding regularly. She jumps a bit also. Sadly, she is traumatic about cats but I’m the same about getting in an airplane. it really depends. Where you live, your facilities and horse housing situation (house or boarding) all factor into cost. What you feed can also make a difference.

Long term meaning 10+ years

I'm in Nevada and the horses are fat and sassy in my area this year. We have some really gorgeous ones... I'd love to have one, but I'm too old for a green hoss...😬. Also, not a fan of BLMs methods. Would love to see it managed by a horse person, not a bureaucrat. Nuff said.
