Starved Belgian Draft Horse rescued from slaughter 1 year later. Update on Anna living her best life

How has it been a year already that Anna was rescued from Last Chance Direct Ship Horses? It seems like just yesterday we picked up a very weak, starved and neglected sweet horse from the Kaufman kill pen. We found Anna days before she was scheduled to ship to slaughter. We are grateful to have found her and we are glad we were there to help her. If you haven’t seen Anna’s original videos I will put a link in the description below to where you can view them.
If you are new to our channel, Anna is an 18 year old, sorrel Belgian Draft horse standing 17ish hands tall (maybe taller). Anna was in horrible condition when we found her. She as starved, neglected, injured, weak and defeated. Anna was in serious need of a retirement home and groceries. When I showed Cory her post we agreed that we needed to rescue her. She deserved better! No animal deserves to be abused, starved or neglected. Cory drove to Kemp, TX to pick her up a few days later. We started her on the path to recovery filled with love, kindness, food and medical attention. Anna was the first horse we rescued that I was truly concerned about and didn’t think she was going to survive her first night with us.
WOW, was I ever wrong! Anna is a true fighter! With love and proper nutrition Anna is living her best life now and enjoying every minute of retirement! Anna had a long road to recovery with a few medical concerns and about 500 pounds to gain. She overcame all the obstacles in her way and fought to get healthy. This video is a look back at Anna’s life on our farm along with how she is doing one year after being rescued and saved from shipping to slaughter. As Paul McCartney once said…All you need is love! The one item WE always need is FEED! If you would like to send a gift/donation of feed (Alfa Pro, hay, etc) you can send that through our local feed store, HF & C Amarillo. HF&C Amarillo has offered to help us with anyone wanting to send a gift/donation of Alfa-Pro to the horses. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo/Big Hoof Foundation and they will add the gifts to our account.
Alfa-Pro is a complete pelleted alfalfa mixed with vitamins and minerals all the horses need on a daily basis. Alfa-Pro is $17.45 per bag. They do offer a discount if you purchase by the pallet (40 - 50 pound bags) $16.95 per bag if purchased by the pallet. WE go through about 5-1/2 bags per day to feed all 15 horses (270 pounds per day). We also purchase square bales of coastal hay from HF&C. We use 4 bales per day to feed all the horses. Square bales of hay are $16.75 each.

Hello... I'm 84 and live in my van with my service 🐕🦺 on scant social security for five years now...I watch from Titusville Florida...great work..can not donate...wish i could.... Lexi is my girl... we're together four years... inherited her and sibling four years ago. Bg died of heart attack last summer at 9 years old.. Lexi is ten... My daddy had a Belgian for a plow horse back in 1937-39 when I was a toddler, and he was my only playmate. I sat beneath him and played.....he was so careful where he put his feet, and I loved him. He was named SHORTY, can you imagine!!!! I've loved horses ever since, especially the Belgians.

So true! They love the attention and being brushed is their favorite. I have to keep them separated these days to brush they because they follow me around to be brushed and cause little scuffles with the other horses. LOL

@@FletcherFarmsAmarillo We do what we can. I gave a home to a little abused dog and she will know love and shelter, food and medical security for the rest of her life. I am a senior on a fixed income and with my volunteer work, sharing my garden produce and prayers, that’s my contribution to the world. It’s what I can do. Teach by example. You reach a lot of people and by doing so raise awareness plus you give those beautiful animals a chance to know love and care. Blessings on you all!

Such a beautiful transformation of love. Shame on the heinous, ugly humans who starve and abuse these gentle giants then dump them for slaughter. It is almost too hard to watch her in the beginning. It takes a special dedication and spirit to do your work. God Bless.

I cried all night because I didn't think she would survive the first night here. She is a fighter who knows love and kindness now and will never be abused again!

I reiterate that the Amish are the main ones that do this to their wrk horses as a basic practice…. After all that are the main group that still use horse power to run their farms and yes other individuals that use horse power for farm work do it too but not on the scale they do it. Buy the way they are notorious for they puppy mills also as they do this on a commercial level. Many rescues try to help these animals out if they have been abandoned but sadly many pups are killed if not up to their standards for resale.

@@cherylhudson325 I don't disagree with you about how the Amish treat their animals but its not just the Amish that abuse and mistreat animals. I worked for a rescue group in Las Vegas, NV and I saw first hand what people can do to animals and it makes me sick! Animal abuse on all levels no matter who they are needs to be addressed. Animals do not deserve to be treated the way they are sometimes.

Bourse racing and the Big Lick are right up with them in the cruelty to sending horses to the slaughter pipe line.

Her change in expression makes me cry. She was so broken when you got her including emotionally, and it was obvious on her face. Now she has a look of quiet, gentle happiness and peace. OMG. Happy tears.

I'm right there with you! I shed a few tears while putting this video together. I hadn't looked back at her original picture in a while and her transformation is amazing. Dr Waggoner was here the other day and she was happy with the progress Anna made in a short time. We are so glad we were able to help her.

I'm so happy that you are letting Anna's mane and tail grow out. I think it makes her look more like a mare not like a stallion who is all neck. Why do the workhorses always have to have their tails docked so short? It would seem like they have so much sweat from working that they would want them to be able to have their tail and their mane to be able to swat or shake their mane to get rid of flies, horse flies or yellow jackets.

Thank you! We have no idea what happened to the foal. There wasn't a way to find the foal either. The kill pen trucks pick up from all over. It said she came from Ohio but you never know if that is true.

People can be mean, cruel and nasty to other people, all animals and life because they are disconnected from their heart and Soul.
Anna is a beautiful horse, and I am so glad you were able to rescue her. She is a testement to what the power of unconditional love can do, especially in the life of an animal who has almost given up. Thank you Julie and Cory for all your loving care for these beautiful animals.
I do not understand how any person could starve and mistreat any animal. An eye for an eye people. We all go for a life review in heaven. Those of you who have abused animals will get to enjoy that same pain. I do find a bit of pleasure knowing that fact. Anna is a beautiful horse. I hope she is happy on your farm. Anna looks like a completely different horse. She is very beautiful and doing so well. I just wish you had been able to get her foal too. You and your Husband are Angels with the work you do. Anna looks so good, happy and enjoying life. Just watching her get a wee bit cross with the donkey at feeding time, perhaps she had to fight to get any food from where she was. Anna’s face is so feminine. Belgians have really beautiful heads with big soft,expressive, eyes. How anyone could use and abuse these animals into early graves, literally, is beyond me. All the draft breeds are gentle giants indeed. Please kiss her velvet-soft muzzle for 😘 from ❤an old lady whose first horse looked as bad as Anna. We are a Therapeutic Horsemanship Facility. We have a few donated horses who needed rehab in one way or another. We have found that time & patience are the best healers. Bless you all for your important work!!

I also worked with a Belgian mare @ a different Therapeutic facility. Most of the volunteers there didn't want to handle her because she could be stubborn. I liked her even though she had a mind of her own. We became very close. I'll never forget her!!

Yes. All abuse and neglect and exploitation of these magnificent creatures stems from lack of Love. No love in the heart for self, animals and life. IMO.

You are an angel who brought Anna to heaven on earth. Thank you also so much to Last Chance Direct Ship horses for their important part in saving Anna from slaughter so you could find each other. The difference in Anna is incredible. She had no expression except sadness when you first got her. She is now such a happy mare and living such a great life with her friends. I dare say this is the best home she has ever had in her entire life. It was so thoughtful of your husband to put up her heater when she was so thin. The extent to which you went for Anna's health and comfort are beyond words of kindness and love. Thank you for all you do for these animals that need care so desperately. They are the lucky ones. I wish we could save them all. The work you do is a step forward toward that. Thank you so much!!

Yes! We were so glad that she recovered from that situation.
I had no idea that their hay and grain cost so much...the alfalfa pellets and the amount that you go through on a daily basis is incredible! Now I know why you stress that when I was thinking I would like to send you money for the vet but it's incredible how much their feed for a horse cost everyday and especially in winter time when they're not out in the paddocks eating fresh GR grass.

How someone could starve an animal is beyond me. There are rescues this person could have contacted. I’d go without food myself before I let that happen my dogs. She’s a beautiful color.

Thank you for the kind words and support. The way the kill trucks pick up there was no way to find her baby. There was a chance that the baby didn't make it and thats why she was sent to slaughter.

Similar in New Zealand. Some mild anti-cruelty laws to protect animals but extremely rarely imposed. Animals just don’t count, even hedgehogs!😡

Great update, love what you do. I"ve been separated from horses for so many years now, that the very best part of this video for me was the actual SOUND of Anna mowin' and munchin' on that grass. I could hear the roots rip....marvelous. She looks so much healthier thanks for saving her and giving her a happy retirement.

I am not even half way through this video, have never owned horses, ( but at 74, now 78) volunteered at the local Parks Equestrian Center because I love these majestic beings. Anyway, my heart is warmed by watching the loving care you are giving to Anna (my mother's name.) Thank you do much. God bless❤

@@59Alaskan they use glue. Sometimes I can get them off with linseed oil…the last few though I have had to cut off their manes or tails.

Thank you for watching. Unfortunately it isn’t just eh Amish that abuse horses. Finn for example was owned by someone after working on an Amish farm and those people did not take care of him. They left him in a pasture and then dumped him at the kill lot. It’s so sad what happens to these beautiful animals.
PS - I just can’t say enough about these owners !!! I love love love the way they do their 100 percent very best for these horses !!!

Oh the improvement in Anna is amazing she's filling out and with her shiny coat looks so well. She is reserved character so it will take a little while for her to really start to relax. She is a beauty ❤ Thank you for caring enough to give this wonderful horse a home. ❤
