Update on the 3 rescued Belgian Draft Horses after their vet appointments and arrival to the farm

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Episode 86
Back a few weeks ago, with the support of all our followers, subscribers and friends we were able to rescue 3 more Belgian Draft Horses from shipping to slaughter from Bowie Texas Livestock. We rescued 2 mares and a gelding. If you didn't see the last video (link below) one of the mares was in horrible condition. She is blind in her right eye, has a sever sway back and is underweight. The gelding from the original livestock yard video was extremely underweight and was having an issue with his back left leg as you could see him limping while walking. The third mare seemed to be in good condition until we got her back to the farm. She came down with a cough and a runny nose. Our priority over the last few weeks was getting these horses the medical treatment they needed along with letting them get settled into their new home.
Our days have been filled with veterinarian appointments, bonding with the new horses and getting these three on the road to recovery so they can live out a happy retirement life after so many years of working. This video is everything that has been happening around here and how the 3 horses are doing after going to the vet and receiving some love and care..
We have started a fundraiser to cover the medical bills for the 3 new horses. The fundraiser can be found at the bighooffoundation.org.
www.bighooffoundation.org
As a growing horse rescue group, we rely on monetary donations to keep the organization moving forward. The Big Hoof Foundation will always be transparent with how your donations are used. 100% of the money we raise goes directly to the rescued horses' bail fees, transport, feed, hay, medical bills, medications, alternative medical treatments, supplements, surgeries, etc. Every dollar raised is for the horses!
Our ability to help these horses is only because of the generous donations from our subscribers and followers! Please consider making a tax deductible donation to the Big Hoof Foundation to help us save more of these precious lives from shipping to slaughter and provide them with the care they deserve. Thank you everyone for your continued support in saving these gentle giants! We could not be saving these lives without you!

EPM, look up Oliver the Clydesdale's story on Homestead Horsemanship, he was close to dying 12mths ago when he was rescued, if Grace has the same response to treatment as he did, she will be unrecognisable in a few months

I follow Oliver at Homestead Horsemanship and can attest to his marvelous improvements over this past year. It's been remarkable to watch him get bigger and stronger and now he's a Gorgeous Clydesdale. He has bred to Sioux, and we can't wait to see if it a boy or girl. Most of us hope & pray it's a colt & looks like Oliver!!😂❤

Grace's back was shocking me at first, but she walks good half the way... oh, what a past did all these horses have to go through, and they still are so sweet, doing everything you request them to do at the vet... poor animals, poor souls... but being with you they can at least enjoy the evening of their lifes, being taken good care of and being loved. ❤

Grace is strong in spirit. Her sway back due to untreated illness is severe, but she is fighting hard. I am concerned about her age (26, right?), and medication can have side effects too, and leading with kindness, I know you handle tough decisions and situations all the time. I was wondering when Korbin will be introduced to the herd, and if Blue has had her foal yet. The herd has grown, you evaded the fire, but warmer weather is coming soon again. Stay safe dear angels, stay strong.

For whatever reason, Taren seems to be Massie's choice of humans. Having her trust so fast will be a great help for you guys and will hopefully make her transition to retired living easier for her. Your farm is amazing. Your pride shows in how you enjoy sharing with us the herds lives and please never apologize for it. You deserve much much more but I'll venture to guess that being accepted into the herd is the only reward you desire. I've been watching your journey for a while now. I see how concerned for each horse your crew are and how far you are willing to reach to ensure all of the herd has the best care to live a comfortable worry free retirement. TYSM

So great to see three more exploited draft horses are save now and will get the love and care they deserve. I am no horse expert but saw the hooves of Will and think he will feel better after a good pedicure by your farrier. The start of the video made me smile - watching one of your gentle giants sneaking up to you. I wonder who this was. 😉 And I admire that you still can tell us who is who. I also follow Homestead Horsemanship, and although their breeding of horses concerns me, I do believe rhey take excellent care of their animals. Yes, Oliver had EPM, but was only about 1.5 years old when diagnosed and treated. Grace is significantly older and probably has had the disease longer thus allowing for more damage. I'm praying, and donating, for her health to improve...but even if she never improves , by being with Julie & Cory she is guaranteed to have a peaceful, loving remainder of her life! ❤️

Homestead Horsemanship has two stallions that had EPM. The oldest stallion Bob made a partial recovery and the newest stallion Oliver was ver fortunate to make a full recovery. Bob shows signs of EPM if he is confined to stall for a length of time, for him running in open pasture helps him get his hind legs moving properly. Bob has been doing well for quite a while now and his quality of life looks great.

What a sweet bunch they are!!! Grace looks so tiny next to Dutch it's cute! and I'm gland that there was nothing really wrong with her. I'm also really glad to that Will is responding well to the injections to help with his arthritis...he seems like such a sweet, gentle heart, if only very concerned about stepping on things he doesn't know, lol, perfectly reasonable...Poor little Grace, I really her that hear treatment works!!! She just breaks my heart...though it seems from watching her just go about thing just as she does she is one of those horses who is going to be fine as a bind horse especially once she learns her environment, she'll be fine, just as she's doing now with hardly any sight. Really, her biggest challenge is to beat that protozoa, that stupid microscopic, single celled organism that's making her neurologic, (Ugh, I bet her previous owners knew, and that's why they dumped her, she's in too good of condition otherwise...) I really hope she can beat it!!! And thank you for giving her a chance, and know you always do what's in her best interest. I thank you from the bottom of my heart💖

I did donate for the rescue of these three beauties and will go on and do another for the vet bills and treatment..l know it has been already mentioned but Homestead Horsemanship has two horses with epm..Bob who still has it but its manageable..he is their stud and is fine he can walk and run but just has a little wobble now and again..he is a Missouri Foxtrotter..the other horse is Oluver..he is a Clydsdale and they rescused him last yr..we all helped them raise the funds as they are not a rescue but they made a connection with this guy and knew he needed help. He stumbled when running and was diagnosed with epm..so l know how expensive it is..he had 2 rounds of it and now is clear..his blood shows absolutely no sign..so it IS worth a try..you'd never recognise him to be the same horse..the vet said his blood count was only 20% and he probably wouldn't have lasted another 24 hours ! That's how bad he was..he didn't lay down for over 2 weeks because he just knew he wouldn't get up again..he is actually going to pull a cart with the family tomorrow in St Patrick days parade..THAT is how good he is now..if you have time look up Oliver at auction then the recent ones .he's a stallion but an excellent behaved one..at the moment he is looking after their foals😂.. he is a gentle giant..which of course you know all about... Maisie will come around..we don't know how bad the poor girl has had it..great that Will and Grace can be together..both in the recovery ward so to speak..as someone who has osteoarthritis l understand your pain Will..Good luck with the treatments for both of them..they're all eating and loving their alfa pro😂 probably never ate so well in their lives..Bless you for what you do..l hope that your subscribers can help with the fundraising..l know time's are hard..l live on a budget too..but even if we all give a small amount it adds up to help get that much needed epm medicine..God Bless you..and don't forget to look up Oliver at Homestead Horsemanship.. 🇬🇧💕✝️🙏👏👍🐎🐎🐎💊💉⚕️🇺🇸

I've only known heartbreak with EPM. Here, in Michiana, it is more common (with the Amish, too) Thank you for giving Grace an opportunity to know joy.

Put a BELL at the top of WILLs neck so Grace will be sure to follow him.❤ Thanx for rescuing them.sometimes some are ready to give up. They don't see life as we do. 😊

My horse had EPM (NTX based horse). Confirmed by response to treatment because many TX horses will test positive to the blood test as most have been exposed. Stress seems to bring on EPM, at least it did for mine and being at an auction has got to be stressful! Two months of Marquis completely cured him, no lasting ataxia and he lived to be 30.5 (diagnosed at 17). However, I noticed the ataxia early and that tends to have more positive outcomes for neurological horses. He was still trail riding 4 mos before he died (natural causes). Valley vet has Marquis for $1289.

Hi Julie I’m a monthly supporter and help when you have a fundraiser as I love all animals. I’ve been a big supporter of trying to ban animals travelling al over Europe for slaughter and in the 40+ years it’s still happening and can’t for the life of me understand the barbaric cruelty of it. So I love draft horses and after seeing your KZread video last year I liked your set up and genuine heart. I’m writing after seeing the recent vide, the second horse’s back was horrific and wanted to ask if there in pain and does it shorten there lives etc. obviously it’s because of carrying heavy loads. How can you look at the horse knowing it was helping you and continue to do nothing. Anyway thank you for what your doing love the videos and wish you well into the future. Joan ❤️🇬🇧

No, it's not 'obviously' from 'carrying heavy loads'; that is very far from the truth. Swayback/equine lordosis is congenital, and is thought to have, in some cases, a genetic component, but the good news is that, unlike lordosis in most other species, even in the severest cases it is functionally benign. Neither early nor late onset lordosis has any negative influence on a horses health or soundness; the only problem that might occur is that it will probably be more difficult to fit a saddle for a riding horse. Harness work will be totally unaffected, and mares conceive, carry and deliver foals perfectly normally.

Yes we know their hooves need work. It takes time to work with them and earn their trust so we can get them in our stock to work on them safely.

Oh no, I never thought of the fires. Will put that on my prayer list. Awh, beautiful names for all three of your newest additions. All those horse vet procedures seem intense...taking a breath here... God bless "Horse Vets". I'm sorry, to be crabby, but it infuriates me that horses are allowed to get to these points, without preventive or regular vet cks/care..

Appreciate the update and shame your supplier is charging so much to a charity. She weighs more than Oliver but still feels like robbery. January 1st all our medical costs increased by 45%. Will and Grace eh? Cute... Hopefully spring will arrive and stick around. We expect snow tomorrow after wearing t-shirts.
