I once bought a quarter horse stallion for one dollar. With papers. He looked so bad that the vet told us to ask for our dollar back because we got cheated. He proved to be King Ranch bred. Also a fully trained cutting horse. He was badly foundered and it took us 3 years to bring him back to full health.

My first horse was a pity buy at 50 dollars. He was so thin and hungry he laid down in the trailer to eat the crap on the floorboards as I was trailering him home. He was only 6 months old and was skin and bones. I had the vet out and he was appalled at his condition, gave me a feeding schedule, which I followed to the letter. He turned out to be the sweetest guy, a willing partner and a great all around horse. He was my partner for many years. I love seeing scarlet, she’s turning out to be a beautiful little mare. Great job seeing her potential.

I’m 74 now. He’s been gone for so long but I still smile when I think about him. I could jump on him from behind and he’d just stand there. He was 14.1 hands of sweetness. Great little horse. @@janetrodriguez914 Patch (an adorable nickname) and Apache (a badass, majestic name). A star on the forehead. What a great mark! Don’t know anyone personally who had a horse that’d let you jump on them from behind. My mom was very close with her horse TT (Town Talk) and the most accomplished jumper in IL as a girl and then young teen and he’d never let her do that. So, yeah, a once in a lifetime bond and horse. Very great.

What a wonderful person/trainer you are! Giving Pete the chance shows the kind of heart you have. I had a 3 year old gelding that was jumped on from a tree and had a plw hitched up behind him and allowed to run. I don't know what kind of maniac thought this was any kind of acceptable behavior. Years later I ran into a trainer that was stunned I had him and was riding him. He said he didn't know whether he or the horse would make it out alive. He's the one that told me about the horrible things that had happened to him. I taught Teka as much as he taught me. He was ok with me and other women who knew what they were doing. He got rid of other riders as soon as possible...nothing mean, but he only liked who he liked. I had to sell him at 11 years old due to losing my job and the stable closing where I had him. I know I'll see him again when it's my turn to die and we'll go running over the fields and through the woods jumping everything in our path.

You "had to sell him at 11 years old due to losing [your] job & the stable closing" . . . ??? YOU (or the HORSE) was 11 years old? I've seen in a movie where a cowboy jumped onto a horse from a tree . . . maybe that's what gave the person that idiotic idea. IDK where the idea of letting a horse run with a plow hitched behind them came from, tho! Was Teka your only horse? I''m very sure that he appreciated your understanding & patience!

These are so satisfying to watch, I'm back to watch it a second time. You literally do everything right from your pace with the horse to quarantine protocols to protect your herd, to sensitization without overloading etc. I have watched a few "rehab" videos on youtube and by and large I almost end up yelling "nooooooooo!" at the screen at least once, usually more, but your videos are the exception. I find myself saying "well done!" every time I watch one of yours. My family has been raising and training horses since the 1890s, I wish my grandpa and my youngest aunt were still around so I could show them your videos, they would have really enjoyed these as they were the two in my family that did the most rehabilitating of horses.

Nice-looking little mare, with hopefully, a great future. I had a similar experience many years ago, when I went to an auction and saw foal after foal going through, each making no more than a tenner, and nearly all going for meat. I resisted temptation for a while, but then I couldn't help myself and I bid on a little grey filly. Had her for twelve guineas, and it cost me more to transport that baby home. She wasn't much to look at, at first, and she only made eleven hands, but that's typical for a Welsh Mountain pony. I felt ridiculous riding her when I broke her in, four years later - she had no problem carrying me, but my feet nearly touched the floor! She grew into a fantastic kid's pony and went on to give a lot of children a great deal of pleasure. If only they all had that chance.

This little mare's lucky day was the day you bought her at the auction. What a pretty pretty mare. Love her name Scarlett! Sometimes the least expensive turn out to be the best horses. I especially love your $25 story, because I have one too.💕 When I adopted our little Mustang mare 15yrs ago, as a 2yo, it was the first time the BLM had come to Southern York Co, PA. One of the hottest days in July.😅 Horse nut that I am, it was the wrong thing to do, because the next day (Saturday) they had the auction, but this is when they had started doing the auctions differently. They were offering them for $125, rather than an actual auction. You just had to be the first one to fill out the form, get approved, and you were the proud new owner. I was 55yo at the time (now almost 70). Had horses since I was 16...and one of the 2yo mares caught my eye, and my then 12yo daughter was begging me to buy one. She was an awesome rider. Horses loved her. We didn't have the facilities to gentle one, but there was an awesome TIP trainer there from Southern NJ. She actually works for the BLM now. Anyway, around 4pm I found myself filling out the form. Went into the BLM trailer, handed the lady the form. Since they knew Kristen, I was automatically approved...and the lady says, "That'll be $25." I'm like, I thought it was $125. Her words exactly, "It's the end of the day, it's hotter than hell, and it's a mare. Just give me $25 and we'll call it a day."🤣 She left with Kristen at midnight, who put 30days on her, then we took over her training. We've had her for 15yrs now. Best mare I've ever owned. She totally took care of my daughter on many a trail ride. Smart as a whip and love her to death. Nobody believes she's a Mustang....and I love telling my $25 story, too. People always compliment us that she's such a beautiful horse, then ask....a Quarter Horse? Once someone said she was a mini-Warmblood.😅 I, literally, have to raise up her mane, as it falls on the wrong side, to show them her brand before they believe me.😆 One thing is for certain, once you have a Mustang, you'll always have a Mustang.❤

Thank you for doing this video - I know how much editing it takes to do this!! You are doing such a good job with Scarlett - love seeing the before and afters!! I refer to the Nicker Maker horse cookies as “Pony Crack” as I have not had 1 horse reject them and, for those cookies will get over fears a lot faster than the other flavors. They are kinda big for positive reinforcement training so I have busted them up into a few pieces for that. I am looking at a hip replacement this winter so I’m living vicariously through you and some other YTers even though I have 4 grown horses and 1 baby MFT who is still on his mamma waiting till I am able to work with them again. Thanks for showing us how it’s done with patience and kindness!! ❤❤❤

Wow-it was the kill pen and illness that blew her mind-My Warm Springs Indian Reservation filly stood on a hill exposed to the wind with yucky dusty donated hay at the rescue-til I found a ride for her-my own trailer with my sons truck) It only took 6 weeks to beef her up on alfalfa amazing grass hay beet pulp and dry oats barley and corn-plus vits minerals-and she was 6 weeks to halter and lead and lunge-all in 20 mins-she accomplished this-never forgot-willingly performed -and tie with a hay bag-but thank goodness no illness bad weather and kill pen-they call it that for many reasons-So happy you both are where you are now together-I love Scarlet-she is one heck of a beefy little filly-a nice mountain horse !
