Only a few minutes into this video, I diagnosed Nigel as having AGING ROCKSTAR SYNDROME. He was literally saved from the brink of death and is now becoming an Internet sensation. He appreciates nothing, especially all the touching and fussing. He wants what he wants when he wants it. He only wants to eat treats and doesn’t care that you spend so much money on him that you’re embarrassed to tell your friends and family. Ask me how I know? 😂😂😂

I have done rescue, cats and dogs, for decades. We adopted our last cat a year ago. An older cat, but he basically outlived his 88-year-old owners. A greater DIVA, I have never known in my life. If I let him in and don’t drop everything I’m doing and immediately to give him my full attention. He wants back out. 🤨😟

Our buddy Nigel learned not to like or trust humans. He must have been mistreated as so many stallions are by impatient people who never took the time to train him kindly. Trust might never come but tolerance already has. He knows you have NEVER hurt him but you are a pest in his old age. Tough wild mean guys like Nigel just don't need humans----yeah, right! And never forget----Real horses don't need NO snuggling! So says handsome Nigel, after his trim and grooming! That old boy prances so beautifully with just the right bounce, he would have been gorgeous as a parade horse. Your purchase and care of a horse you will never ride or use is so commendable and heart warming, like a warm wood stove on a cold night. Stay safe and healthy.

I was a suburban kid who really wanted a horse, like so many other kids do. I had no idea how labor-intensive horses are when they get the proper care they need. I thought I'd just brush and feed "my horse" who would then love to have me ride him/her any time I felt like it. I hope prospective horse owners watch your videos so they have a clear idea of what they are getting into. I am very impressed by all that you do for your herd.

My sister has 3 mini horses. She has Mom, Dad, and baby. The baby had laminitis recently. Her farrier and vet both agreed the horses were all overweight. They store their fat in the top of their neck. That's why it gets floppy. The vet said, especially for the baby's laminitis, to soak her hay in water before giving it to her to get rid of some of the sugars in it. But the vet and farrier said it would help all of them lose weight. The baby is all healed up, and they are all in great shape now. Soaking the hay did the trick!

I guess he expects it. Not that you are a servant. Its always halter, least, walk outside, into barn and food. If something is out of place you break the habit and he has to think about it. I always break the habit when I can. Makes my horse think and enjoy the unplanned for, rather than stress about it.

He's a real character, and so beautiful. I love it that you give him space for all his feels and respect his needs for a more hands off kind of care! So interesting to watch the hoof trim, too. Thank you for all the information. I really appreciate it.

This was extremely interesting! 30 year old pony...bless his heart for tolerating you as much as he does. :) You are a kind soul and I'm sure he knows that he is now safe.

I trim two minis and I LOVE my diamond nail cutters (item number DN10) as mini hoof nippers!!! I also have a spring (W-brand nipper spring) so I can operate them one handed. Diamond also has a mini hoof rasp, but I have not personally used that one. I have a Bellota brand mini hoof rasp which I am liking. Hoofjack also makes a mini stand, but I too just hold their feet by hand since they are rescues who were abused and already stressed by the most basic trimming work anyway. My mid-size hoofjack is purple, but a almost bought the pink! Love that they have fun colors. Really wanted to compliment you on your knowledge, effort to learn a deeper level of horsemanship and healthcare, and willingness to get down and do the good work.

Awesome video! Nigel is such a beautiful pony! That mane!!!! 😊 Are you self-taught or did you attend farrier school? There are so many advantages to doing your own farrier work. Nigel and all your other horses are extremely fortunate to have you as their caretaker. I can't wait for warmer weather to see Nigel all shed out and training videos with the other horses. ❤

Self taught, but I've held thousands of horses for some of the best farriers in the industry. I didn't know it at the time but I picked up alot through osmosis. I try to attend at least on clinic a year to help expand my knowledge with the latest and greatest. I save 10K easy every year on just trims!
