Blender 2.8 Render Passes and VERY Basic Compositing [Old School but Beginner Friendly]
- 📲👍Grab a free CG Animation Time Saver eBook here, learn about the industry and get lots of shortcuts and links: www.virtualtweakers.com/freebook
*Edit*: If you use OpenEXR Multilayer, you DON’T NEED to do the the FILE OUT setup. The File Out setup WILL work for .png or other types of files though if you want separate image sequences. Also, for OpenEXR MultiLayer, it will show up automatically when you go to your composite workspace and hit “use nodes”, but to see the animation, bring the EXR file sequence in like I do in the video. I’ll address this in a follow on video.
This video goes into how to render out separate objects and how to render in passes for compositing inside Blender 2.8. It's basic and shows you how to set things up. Later videos will address more advanced features, but this should give anyone new to comp in Blender some ideas of how it all works with collections, a bit about view layers, and multichannel EXR files.
I purposely didn’t add in any shadow over the city in this one due to two factors. 1. The extreme angle of the sun just below the horizon was throwing the shadow off screen, and 2. It would have made this video even longer. I can get it in part 2 if you want?
Also, as a very generous commenter shared, a soften node will help, as will matching the shadows and highlights first. This video is more about rendering out passes in 2.8 and reassembling them than dedicated compositing, and I overlook a few key habits that one should acquire. That’s the next video.

Thanks!! It would be cool. I see it at least being accepted and used like zBrush or Substance. Maybe not as a main DCC yet (established studios have pipelines that they’ve invested lots of money and time in, and you get paid support, which is super helpful) but as an accepted and welcome tool that helps get things done quickly. It’s definitely an awesome program!!

Mix Add doesn’t have a foreground and background as add is a symmetrical operation as is multiply (simple math ;) ). Screen, overlay eye those are asymmetrical and that’s where it matters. You missed one very important step for multi pass compositing. The reason why you want to multi pass is that you can tweak the hue, saturation, values of the passes to match the background plate. Also you first will match the shadows of your overall composite to the plate this is where you can use the shadow pass to match the levels and the color. The you match the highlights and you can use the reflection pass to match that. And then you match the Mids. Then you really want to blur the renders because nothing shot on a camera is that sharp. You can actually count the number of pixels on the backplate when you zoom in and find a straight high contrast edge. And as a final integration you would overlay a noise plate (preferable shot on the same camera as the back plate). Only then will you Michael Bay-ify (cracks me up) it.
@KevBinge
4 жыл бұрын
I knew it! I knew I’d get a dedicated comper in here lol! You’re right, I haven’t comped to plates in a while and have forgotten my way. This info is golden and correct. I can defend myself by saying this is a basic video but yeah... oops on my teaching part. And yes, add and multiply are commutative 😁. I’ll hit all of that and more in the next video. Thanks for taking time out to remind me, and share that knowledge with other readers.

01:43 The eye Icon is Hide in Viewport. I am surprised that turning that off on a collection hides them in the render. Normally, to control what renders we enable it under the filter dropdown (funnel icon) and toggle on the Disable in Renders button (camera icon). This adds the correct render toggle to every entry in the outliner, even collections.
@KevBinge
4 жыл бұрын
I know, it’s a bit strange but works. I know there’s something I’m missing technically but I figured that this works, so I’ll throw it out there knowing he better answer will come from the community 😀. Thanks!!!!
@gordonbrinkmann
3 жыл бұрын
But he's not turning off the Eye icon on the collection. He's completely disabling it by unchecking the checkbox - which also makes everything in the collection unselectable, invisible in viewport and invisible in render. If you watch the video, he's not clicking the Eye icon - and you can see the difference because usually it would just be greyed out to show it's toggled invisible, but the Eye icon has completely disappeared.
Yes more please.

Hey, I love ur videos. And I think I got a helpful tip for u. At the beginning u dropped the MovieClip into another collection to seperate it from the Render. There is also an other way to to do this: - click the filter icon next to the "add collection" button - Here u can activate different toggel options for ur Outliner - Select the camare "Display in Renders" the camera now will right next to the eye behind every object - by clicking and disableing the camera u can remove this object from the render And another thing I noticed. In the video @ 9:16 u did not choose RGBA therefore the transparancy would not be saved in the png image. It worked for u bcs u prerendered the images, but its a useful information for people that are new to blender and never ran into the problem before.
@KevBinge

That’s VERY helpful! I’ve included that in the description and video now as a pop-up. I’ll do a video addressing this stuff soon as well to steer people to a few much easier paths. (I missed the filter icon and thought they did away with render toggle in the final build... turns out it was just toggled off by default lol!). Thanks again and have an awesome day!!

You’re welcome. Quite honestly, the best resource on compositing for me other than just jumping in has been this book: amzn.to/2VdH3yd It’s theory and examples, and pretty thorough. I’m working on it. I just did a short video on using Bloom as a pass. It’s up in my channel now.
Hi there, this is so good to watch your tutorials. I was facing some color space issues with exr render format in blender. as we all know exr files are always saved without the color management lut applied. they are always linear and intended for compositing work. But what if i want to use multiexr format for my aovs. If i render exr format and png format . both are not matching because of filmic lut. So what do you suggest to work with exr formats with blender ? Thank you in advance :)
@KevBinge
4 жыл бұрын
Great question. I usually render out everything in exr first then output what I need from there when I have the look dialed in. I usually only bother with png as the last part of anything if that helps?

You don't have to put the objects in different collection to toggle them off rendering. There's an option on the dropdown (2nd from the right) above the scene outliner that allows you to see more restrict/allow toggles like selection and rendering.
