Blender Terrain - Quick Pre-vis Canyon Desert Environment in EEVEE (and Cycles) [Blender 2.8]

I anyone is having trouble with terrain.party, try this:
• QGIS Game terrain tools
It’s offered up by a generous subscriber here and might work where you are. I’m looking for other alternatives as it seems that there is some international geodata non-sharing thing going on...
Here is another resource that some are using: tangrams.github.io/heightmapper
Blender 2.8 gives us some awesome tools to create terrain and environments. This video shows you how to use imported geo data and procedural shading to create a somewhat believable environment quickly.

    You almost certainly did not lose any viewers. You are doing such a great job teaching the subtleties in this plethora of tools in blender, which is exactly the point you are trying to make which most people don't get. Great work . Would love to see more of both short and long videos. Kudos!

    Thank you so much! It’s such a deep package that seems so simple, yet I’ve been doing 3D for 20 years and I’m still learning new things ALL the time. Finding a good pace to do these videos and still convey the depth is a challenge, but it’s happening 😀. Thanks again!

    They confuse me as well at times. I normally buy my models because... well... I have zero creativity LOL. They come with textures and I have to do alot of trial and errors to connect them to the proper input. This will certainly give me a hand. Great video as always mate.

    It’s procedural shading is awesome! Maya has stuff like this but it’s archaic and dated. Still though, schools want to place students in the industry so they teach what the vast majority of the industry uses, and at the moment it’s still Maya/Max lol.

    Maya isn’t difficult but like anything, takes some time to learn. The interface is a bit older now but is still one of the friendliest I’ve used. The spacebar calls in all kinds of menus and provides quick access to much of the program. The shelf tools are customizable, and it’s still a solid package, especially for character animation. The rigging tools are really easy to use and set up, especially FK/IK switching and drivers. It’s still the big dog on the block. I should do a breakout channel and teach it... it’s been my bread and butter for almost 2 decades... That said, I love Blender 😀

    Wait you guys are getting thought maya in schools?

  • @Rocksteady72a

    @Rocksteady72a

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Dmitry2184 For any majors that use modeling and environmental designs, including VFX, Game Design, and Technical Animation, Maya is taught and expected to be used exclusively (at least that's how it is at SCAD, though I suspect it's not the only school doing that). When I asked about what the professor thought about "rising programs such as Blender", he said it was just a free program and shouldn't be used for professional use. I guess the industry takes time to change their opinions on things. Just hoping that whatever we learn with Maya is wasted once people probably move to Blender.

    I instantly recognised that way of talking from those 1 minute tutorials from Ian Hubert haha, but, you know, those attract more people because they also attract people who are not interested into trying what they are showing. I wouldn't even call them tutorials, more like short fun videos. I think you kept a nice balance with this one instead, between speed and details mentioned :D

  • @KevBinge

    @KevBinge

    Lol! It’s funny because those 1 minute tutorials are funny and like memes, but unless you really know what you’re doing, they are way too fast and advanced for most. I tried doing that style after reading comments and seeing explosive growth, but tired of it. I’d rather attract learners than trolls to be honest. It’s a great way to game the KZread algorithm though, until they catch on... I’ve been online longer than many 🤣. Thanks!!

    @@KevBinge Have to agree with your analysis. Another side to the minute videos is they can leave many with a misplaced? wrong? impression of the time and/or difficulty involved. Ian's are good due to his experience as a lead working with skilled artists that need the outline as they already know the detail work. He isn't explaining how or why; you must be this tall for this ride. His are targeted for mid-level or higher for actual use; popcorn entertainment for others. Without the background skillsets required they can serve as inspiration, but will be out of the range of many viewers. Personally, I find I can't watch Ian's videos. I watch for the titles as they alone are inspiring. Watching the actual video suckers me into the, "Seems easy enough. Shouldn't take long," rabbit hole. They make only take one minute to watch; each time you run through it to catch something you missed. With your trying to bridge the styles with this video and with your above comment you might consider Video01: ADHD style. Video02: An Explanation. More production work, but reusable content, cross linking, double content output that hits two different demographics. Just something to think about. ;)

    Check out the HDRi Sun Aligner addon. It'll automatically create a sun and calculate the brightest point on the HDR and link both of them, so that even when you move your HDR, the sun moves with it.
