I own a M89 that BHA is adding a 24" barrel and 2" tube mag in front of the forend to look like a Winchester 71. My favorite big game varmint load is a 50 caliber 185 gr Lehigh/Guncrafter copper segmented hollow point that has a muzzle velocity of 2730 fps with a report like rolling thunder. Your review helped me choose this rifle. Thanks!
Big bore lever guns are my favorites for sure. Nothing puts a smile on my face like shooting my 45-70. Keep up the great lever gun videos love em.
I don't remember where I got it, but it's a Harley-Davidson "Crusher" hat. You can wad it up into a saddlebag and it springs back to shape every time, also it's waterproof. They are readily available from several online retailers for about 50 bucks.
Being a straight-wall cartridge, the .500 S&W can also be loaded with black powder and BP substitutes and cast lead muzzleloading bullets from Lee, Lyman, and Track of the Wolf bullet molds. Even round balls can be used in these cartridges. Highly versatile.
I had the chance to use one of these on a deer hunt,I had a S&W 500 MAG,I shot it 3 times and traded it off because I wasn't impressed with the handgun, the caliber is great lot of uses but a handgun isn't one,so when I got the chance to use the rifle I took it,I shot one deer and 4 hogs that day all about a 100 yards the 500 hits like a train very impressed, and the gun carries well in the woods

Could of made everyone of those shots with the pistol
Using the hat to collect brass - that's the way! Looks like you're having a pretty good time as always, Jeff!
Just discovered this guys videos and discovered he has passed . A real shame seems like a real nice guy.
It is not cheap, but it is worth the price. The reason no price was mentioned, is that each rifle is built to the customer's specifications. jeff
One of the best lever action rifle made today. Well worth the price and the wait.
For those of you complaining about the optics, the cost for a lever action, etc. must not understand the purpose of such a rifle. It's design is meant to be bullet proof - it will fire in almost any weather conditions and doesn't mind a little mud or rain - when you pull the trigger it never fails to fire. Why is this important? Well, this is a bush gun - range gun - whatever you want to call it. Meant to be useful for both hunting and self protection while in the wild. Easily portable and quick to aim and shoot multiple big caliber rounds that will stop a grizzly that just wandered into camp as well as take down a buck from a 100 yards on the run - in both cases you wouldn't have time for optics. And the cost? How many .50 mag rifles do you think are made? Not huge mass production here. Plus that is a powerful round - good steel with overbuilt chamber/action - meant to last generations of life times I still hunt with an old Winchester .30-30 my great grandfather bought used. I think he got his money's worth.

Thank you for your support! jeff
Man I like this gun.
classic! I'd love to see a sawed off stock version. cool guns to customize.
Thank you, Sir. Boge did a good job on that. I think it will serve well to get people interested in the video, before I start talking about the subject of the review. Jeff
Hey Jeff, been following you for months. Love the show. Big respect from South Africa.
A very beautiful lever gun. If I were a dinosaur hunter, I would certainly purchase one! It looks like a hoot to shoot, and I love how Jeffs hat brim caught all of the spent shells. Another great review!
I would love to have one of those! Great review and video! It's just beyond my buget, but it sure is beautiful. Thanks Jeff.
It depends upon to which 50 caliber you are referring. The 50 BMG is more powerful than either of those others, but te 50 AE is not, and the 500 Magnum is more powerful than the 7.62x39. Jeff
thats pretty , looks solid and the wood is real nice
Thank you, Sir. Jeff
I like both, and properly-loaded, no animal will be able to tell the difference. Jeff
Love how the shells get caught on your hat; some real cowboy action there!
Jeff, great review as always. Like the new intro. This looks like a real cannon. Easy to handle. Good for home defense.
Buffalo Bore claims 1816fps with their 375 XPB from their 9" barrel revolver. Looking at your article (link in description folks) you measured the same round at 2,075! Nice gains! I've been wanting a 45-70 levergun but this 500 has got me reconsidering...
Your hat is a good brass catcher! Great gun, always have to love those leveraction.
Thanks Jeff. As a fellow leftie (that's handedness, not politics!) I appreciate when you point out when your firearms do or don't accomodate left-handed shooting. Lever guns seem to have a big advantage in this regard compared to a standard (i.e. right-handed) bolt gun, especially with a big optic on top.
Man that is a sweet lever gun. I have a 44 mag a 45 colt and of course a 30-30. I wish I could afford the 50 but its just to rich for me. Thanks for the review
Thanks, we're always trying to improve. Boge
Just for grins, I looked one up on Gunbroker. Found a new in the box from 2017 for $4,500. Going down to the QuickStop for a handful of lottery tix as soon as I turn my computer off. Gotta hand it to the folks at Big Horn, they make first class goods. You can get one in 500 or 475 Linebaugh and you'd have a set. :-) Or save $$ and order one from the maker for only $3,700. But then, who knows how long you would wait..?
Fantastic information video thank you very much.
I prefer that too, but some areas have restrictions on how many rounds you can hold in your rifle while hunting. Personally I would simply put a plug in the longer one with the shorter barrel. Lucky for use, they sell both versions.
I enjoy watching your videos. Love seeing normal folks talking about guns, and these rambo wanna bes decked out in tactical vests and cargo pants.
beautiful gun
This is one Hell of a rife It looks awsome
With the same bullet weights, the smaller diameter bullet should penetrate deeper, but there is no animal in the world that would be able to tell the difference when shot. Jeff
I might just have to pick one of these up. The price is a little steep but I love lever guns and I love the 500 S&W magnum round.
Very good looking gun. I don't know if I like the idea of having the rear sight located on the bolt, but I would have to look at one before I made any final judgements.
Yes, we re-posted the video on our channel at their request. Boge
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.... I'll have to take a better look on the website... Take care
Man, I hope I can own one of these, someday.
Nice videos by the way, strong grip goes a long way
MUST have one !!!!
Thanks,it's a nice rifle. I have been wanting a lever action for a long time. Don't know if I want that large of a caliber though. Ahh sure why not .500 SW how can ya not love that?
I agree, but the idea is ammo compatibility. A lot of guys like to have a revolver and a lever gun that use the same round, in case one gun breaks or has some other issue during use. As far as I know, if one falls into this line of thinking and has a S&W 500 mag revolver, this rifle is the only option for compatibility.
love the new intro jeff
It would be awesome if they had a full length mag tube and weren't $3,000 and up. I guess it'll be a handi rifle for me to pair with the revolver. Always nice to have a rifle companion to your revolver. I Love my 357 levergun. Some stout lilgun handloads are extremely impressive from a 16" tube. 158gr going 2,000fps.
@ArchangelsSword

They make them with a full length tube.
Stay tuned!
You can still get both versions, long or short barrel, long or short mag tube. Whatever the customer wants. jeff
wow, thanks I want one!!
I read somewhere there is also a ".500 Special" with around half the energy of the magnum. That would still have a lot of power but with much less noise and recoil. It wouldn't damage the venison as much either.
Miss ya Jeff.
Very nice head mounted brass catcher.
Nice job.
Very handsome rifle. I want one! I also agree with tsazrbomba1, the new intro is very nice. Boge did a great job.
Thanks! Boge
Great review and nice rifle. I like the sights, the stainless used and the caliber. It would work well for packing into the mountains of Montana. A handy bear swatter. It would be popular considering the people who already use the 500 pistols for backup while hunting and prospecting. The price, however, will keep them from getting out there. I understand they are a small company and new to the game so cost is high to produce but the base model starts out at over $2000. Kinda high.

Custom made rifle and I researched Custom rifles I couldn't find very many that started @ $2500 most started way higher than that. I own one and have for years to go with my S&W 500 magnum revolver and it's better quality than any other brand lever action rifle I own and I own 5 or 6 well-known brands of lever action rifle's. Anyone that puts one in their hand personally will see and feel the quality of the Big Horn Armory model 89 500 "Spike Driver". You won't be disappointed so don't worry about the waiting period or the price because you will be well satisfied. I am with mine. Shoots like a Cadillac as well.
It would well with the barnes bullets, but I have tried nothing heavier than 500 grains in this rifle. jeff
Nice brass catcher hat!
In addition to looking good, that hat also doubles as a brass-catcher. :-)
First off, love your youtube videos. I notice that in the video this particular rifle tossed all three shell casings back toward your hat when they ejected. Does the rifle do that consistently?
I own a pre remlin .450 marlin. Nice shooter.
The pointed ammo that I show has a wide enough meplat to prevent detonating a primer. jeff
VERY VERY NICE RIFLE
Where was the brass hitting you if you weren't moving your head when cycling the action? In the face? Seems like something made you want to move your face off the stock every shot... Great review, impressive gun - thanks for sharing!
Does it cycle the long (like the solid copper barnes, and 700 gr flat nose bullets) and short projectiles (like most other rounds)? There is quite a difference in over all length between those. I have a 500 mag revolver, and love it, and the round. This rifle is a must for me.
New video lead in is great. Nice rifle. Do you think it is much better than a pre remington Marlin 45-70.
Like the new intro!
Great review Jeff! Whats the estimated msrp? Because I want one!!
I have seen one of them goober smoochers pansy around with an 1894 and he got an empty mashed up in his action. I wouldn't let him anywhere around my bighorn! Thanks for this review, I've been a long time lever-addict. I still haven't found an ideal use for my ranch hand but I keep on running it. Do you find yourself drawn to lever action or single action old school firearms?
Hey Jeff you ever try any pietta cap and palls if so could you make a video on them and would the 1858 44 model be good for deer hunting.
nos produzimos porque não podemos consumir ?
Jeff, It seems the jury is out on this one. Thought I'd ask THE man. 500mag vs 45/70 all other variables equal. I.E. same type rifle, same barrel length, loads and so on.
thnx jeff
That is the ejection pattern, but it is not a problem. jeff
What is the recoil like? Compared to a Mossberg 500 12 gauge, that is.
Nice! Just wondering if you like 500 better then 45 70 large game . I have not looked up ballistic comparisons.
is there a version with pistol grip, no stock, barrel cut down to just a bit past the mag tube on the 1 in this vid? i'd love a .50 lever pistol type of thang.
HELLYEAH A LEFTY FINALLY
Will it have any problems chambering the longer 700gr hard cast bullets?
recoil compared to a 12 slug also damage?
i always wanted to know which is stronger 500 mag 50 cal or 7.62x39 ?
where can I get a tactical case catcher like the one you're wearing?
Most states limit the amount of ammo you can have in the gun while hunting so a longer tube would be a waste. Some people may ever prefer the look of the bobbed magazine tube.
I do not know, as I have not tried those. jeff
That is mighty low recoil for such a potent load.
Why would they cut down the mag tube? I liked the prototype a lot better.
Was that the standard walnut or the upgraded black walnut?
I didn't realize anything like this was int he works! Any idea if there's a 460SWMag variant coming out? I already have some 45Colt on hand. Either way, this is a beauty of a piece! I'll scoot on over to read the article and check on the gun porn. Nice brass catcher, btw, Jeff ;-)
Awesome Rifle Jeff. Any idea what the retail is on this is?
back packing gun?
imagine this at a cowboy action shoot lol
Cool how your hat was catching the shells lol. And I agree 100% with your flag!!
so no scope on this one ?
Notice other youtubers, how he keeps the stock in his shoulder while cycling the action.
I to would like to compare the 500 to the the 45/70
@dundonrl
6 жыл бұрын
With factory ammunition, the are about the same, the difference comes when you load the 500 S&W up to the full 60,000 CUP that SAMMI has for it, and THEN you get a anywhere from 700 to 1000 ft lbs more energy. Also, since the 500's are shorter than the 45-70, you can carry 7 of them in the magazine on the carbine, the Henry 45-70 only has 4 and the Marlin 1895 only has 6, for the same length long gun (37" on the BHA Model 89 and Marlin 1895, 39" on the Henry)
tchê no meu dia a dia na campanha essa arma seria ideal , se meu país fosse sério !
I noticed you had shot some of the Buffalo bore rounds through it. Are they safe in a lever action, or did you just load them one at a time.
