460 S&W Magnum Rifle - Code Name "Fire Hammer"

Take one of the world's most powerful handgun rounds and wrap a rifle around it and you've got an absolute hammer of a boom stick. This is a look at the Thompson/Center Katahdin 20" rifle barrels for the Encore rifle frames. At just 4.5 pounds and 34" overall length this thing totes like a short barreled rifle, hits like a freight train and is laser pinpoint accurate.
The kinetic energy calculation (estimate without putting it on a chrono) alone of the 200 grain Hornady FTX humming at 2400 feet per second is a whopping 2559 foot pounds at the muzzle!
You'll notice the stock has a less than stock finish to it with the Kryptek Typhon dip job from our buddy Brett at Reaper Innovative Precision in Fort Collins, Colorado. You can check out his site at reaperprecision.com. He's a great guy and an outstanding craftsman.

I'm chronographing 2700 fps with mine, and it's actually shortened to 19" to eliminate the front sight when a muzzle break was added. It's one heck of a deer killer now! With a Nikon Monarch scope this factory Ammo groups well under an inch at 100 yards and dropp[ed an Indiana doe in her tracks at a measured 167 yards. Sweet!

All come on guy! My daughters 16 and 22 years old shoot my 460 S&W in 5" and 2-3/4" barrels all the time, using off the shelf loads and have no problems with making good hits on their targets every time. I started teaching them both how to shoot when they turned 4 years old. Doing hand and arm work to strengthen their arms and grips before they ever held a handgun. So that the weight of the gun wouldn't be as much of an issue for them. We live in a part of Alaska where seeing 4-5 bears in a day is a common thing. It's all in your hold and grip of the handgun; push-up, pull-ups, and core body exercises are essential to having a strong, healthy body to mitigate any recoil of any just about any handheld firearm. I started them off young with firearms, just as my dad started me off at a young age handling, learning and manipulating guns with him being a Korean and Vietnam Veteran. Yep, you guessed it, I'm military also and have an extensive education and experience in combat arms from the hardest and best schools in the world's best US military service :-) Thanks

The S&W 460 platform that has the most muzzle flip is the snub nose S&W 460 Emergency Survival (yellow hand grips). The snubnose 460 is definitely a handful but still is a blast to shoot

The 460 sw mag pistol is not bad to shoot, similar to a 44 mag for recoil. A true 200 yd pistol. The 45 raptor based off the 460 is a deer hammer. I get up to 3000 fps with the 200 gr ftx and not much recoil.

You mention early in the video that the bullet was "point four six". It is not. They are .451, which means the rifle will also shoot 45 Schofield, 45 Colt and 45 Casull. One of the most versatile calibers out there.

For the sake of the people that take this man literally, there is an enormous amount of the initial explosion in the 460 S&W XVR revolver platform that the shooter doesn't feel. This is due the the gap between the cylinder and the forcing cone on the revolver that is unavoidable for the revolver to "be a revolver." This Thompson single shot platform would ballistically be superior from the full power of the explosion propelling the projectile down the barrel, an even longer barrel for that matter. Hope that helps clear things up for those who are unfamiliar and think that the revolver platform is incredibly brutal, it's very powerful, but not unmanageable. Cheers.

I have had a custom setup on my pro hunter for 460SW since 2012. I can say without a doubt that it is one of the hardest hitting hunting options in my safe. I have taken deer out to 150 yards with no hold over and all have fallen right in their tracks. I went with Match Grade Machine barrel 24" in length, 300GR XTP-Mag on top of 40GR of Lil' Gun powder. I am getting right at 2300fps with this setup and 3/4" groups at 100. Any faster and there is key holing and all the other rounds I have tried other than the XTP-Mag experience odd failures of the jacket due to excessive heat buildup on the way out the 24" barrel. I wasn't able to find any factory loads that would work in my setup.

Oh,i would definitely put a low powered variable on it...open sights and red dots will NOT let you "thread"your bullets through the brush(learned that the hard way)

Really enjoyed the video. I do have the 460 w/8+ barrel and the 500 with the 4 in barrel. They are a handful especially the 500. The ammo at the time was about 60 bucks for 20. My marlin guide gun reminds me of the maneuverability but it is heavier. For the 500; shoot low ricochet's definitely count. Reloading all my ammo now and a 4 or 500 gr bullet will eat up asphalt or gravel. My hands and wrists have always been able to handle it. But I do want a 460 and 500 rifle like that. Not a young strong animal. thanx............drafted in 69

I have a custom barrel 460 s & w from bully balls. It's a 12" barrel intergal muzzle brake. I was surprised that I got 2600 fps out of it. I have taken doe hunting with it useing 200 grains Hornady ftx Each doe were taken at around average of 100 yards. None required a follow up shot and no tracking job, they all drop in their tracks. The recoil wasn't that bad while taking the doe (hunting) I notice the recoil while sighting in the pistol at 2" high at 100 yards. It well take my skin off my trigger fingers at each recoil from the trigger guard. Quick fix. I put a leather rap on the trigger guard where the guard was hitting my finger. I reload 200 grains Hornady ftx and I'm very happy with this set up. I have no problems with my pro Hunter. I bought the pro Hunter (frame only)when they first came out and I have to this day. I have bought other pistol barrels.theys just one I didn't like that's is a 378 gnr. Tried selling it no one wants it even the company I bough from don't even want back as a trade for something else. It's just sitting some where collect dust.( Just the barrel not the whole pistol )

Thompson/Center 20" Encore rifle weighs 7 pounds, not 4.5. And 34.5" overall length. Also, the 460 S&W bullet diameter is 0.451" not 0.460". I own a 460vxr 8.38" which is a 5 shot revolver, not 6. And is actually fairly manageable. It certainly won't break your wrist.

I hunt with a 14" s&w 460 revolver. Granted it weighs more than that rifle and has a muzzle break. The gun bucks up off the bench but you could shoot it all day if you can manage something like a 44 magnum well. The shorter lighter revolvers are a different situation though so is the TC pistol in the 460 s&w. Something like this rifle would be intriguing though.

I have a 8" 500 smith revolver on the way. watching videos, I am a tad bit nervous about the recoil but seeing that the 8" 460 and 500 smith revolvers weigh in at 4.5 pounds and are compensated, it should be somewhat manageable. Im handloading for it so I can always defect to moderate/light loads when the heavies get to be too much. Cant wait to touch off some 700gr bullets but I'll only throw one in the cylinder to start. dont wanna accidentally double tap and lose my mind.

I’ve bought 260 grain flat nose to hunt with this fall, the Federal fusion round, I hope this round holds together, if not, I have some 454 rounds I’ve shot in my 460, I know they stay intact.

I Have one of these and I shoot the Buffalo Bore with Barnes bullets and its awesome. I used a chrono and it shot at 2900fps. I used it hunting and hit a deer with it at about 60ish yards and it hammered the buck. It was a heart shot and ran maybe 30 yards and piled up. It shoots lighter than a 12 ga 3" slug out of a pump shotgun. Its about the same as my 50 cal encore with 150 gr of blackhorn 209 and 250 gr barns TEZ. I love how small the rifle is. My rifle has the walnut stock, much prettier IMHO.

Curious how does it compare to the 45-70 rifle round. Correct me if I’m wrong but is it a pistol round or a rifle? I’m looking to get something fun for my encore and can’t decide on the the two rounds.

I was debating between the 45-70 and 460 myself. I got out my reloading manuals and the 45-70 shows about 200fps faster. Of course the data shows the 45-70 in rifle length and 460 in pistol length, so I'm sure they are neck and neck. I ordered a 460 barrel today, because it can also shoot 45 auto rim, 45 cowboy special, 45 Schofield, 45 LC, and 454 Casull. I know your comment is 6 months old, but in case you're still looking I thought I'd share my reasoning. Happy shooting!

Gun Sense (drmaudio) Exactly what I was saying. Thick woods maybe too. I remember probably 20 years ago a friend was hunting with us on our property and he shot a buck THROUGH a 3" cedar sapling with his .444 Marlin using led tip round nose game hand loads. I've always been intrigued with the thumping power of big bores ever since.

+Haus of Guns I have one of the SSK 444 Marlin conversions in a 14" Contender barrel. It's a handful from the bench, not bad offhand. It is of course a re-chambered 44 Mag barrel.

i have it in the pistol platform. You cant shoot these kind of guns and big caliber with out handloading your own ammo. i load some very mild rounds for it and its not to bad to shoot. kicks just as much as a my 308 barrel with mild loads for it. But it starts to be to much when your maxing out a load. but its still control able. I guess im better off than most people because i shoot big bore hand guns mostly. 44 mag and and 454 casual in ruger super blackhawks. my 44 mag with a 6inch barrel with my bear loads that are 305 grain super hard cast maxed out for the highest fps it kicks a hell of a lot more than the 460 barrel. jus tbecause my 44 mag weighs less.

I've got an Idea to run by ya. How about a 300 WSM case with the next cut off and load it with a true 480 cal bullet. Or, Straighten out the neck on a 308 and load it with whatever cal bullet it'll accept.

CLOWN - LOL , i posted a video of me shooting S&W 460s and 500s hand held! By far the 460ES was the worst beating I ever took. That 2.5" barrel was brutal! When I shot the 460 with a 14" barrel (revolver) it was easy! Thats why I am surprised that 20" barrel was so stout! Dont think the muzzle break on the 14" was that effective caus e the 500 8&3/8" barrel with no break was far easier than the 500ES. Seemed to me the barrel length was the main factor! Love the 460 round best!

super-magnum revolvers (.460 sw, 480 ruger, .500 sw...) are mostly novelties, target range trophies, with some interesting hunting applications. these super-magnum cartridges in single-shot, lever action and semi-auto RIFLES for hunting are an untapped market with great potential. I had a 90's era Thompson Center single shot rifle in .375 Winchester,...and these new super mag rounds seem ideal to evolve the rifle POU and platforms.
